EFCC arrests ex-Jigawa lawmaker

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested a former member of the House of Representatives, Muhammad Kazaure in Kano.

It could be recalled that Kazaure once represented Kazaure, Roni, Gwiwa and Yankwashi federal constituency in the House of Representatives between 2015 to 2023.

Kazaure is a member of the All Progressives Congress, and has been vocal on various issues, including insecurity and corruption allegations against a former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

Recall also that on 17 December 2022, the Central Bank of Nigeria denied allegations made by Kazaure, that N89.09 trillion in stamp duty collections had been diverted and that the then CBN Governor, Emefiele, kept $171 billion in the bank’s private investors’ account as proceeds of stamp duty.

According to reports, Kazaure was invited to the EFCC office in Kano, where he presented himself, only to be arrested and subsequently flown to Abuja on Wednesday.

The reasons behind his invitation and arrest are yet to be disclosed, with speculation rampant about the circumstances surrounding his detention.

As at the time of this report, the EFCC has not provided any official statement on the matter, leaving many to wonder what led to the arrest of the former lawmaker.

However, efforts by our correspondent to reach out to the EFCC spokesperson in Kano proved abortive as the EFCC Kano spokesperson, Idris Nadabo, when contacted on telephone on Thursday declined to comment on the arrest of the former Jigawa lawmaker simply stating, “You should contact headquarters, Abuja,” and refused to provide further details.
