Plateau killings death toll rises to 54, says Amnesty

Amnesty International says the death toll from the recent attack on the Plateau community has risen to 54.

On Monday, more than 25 persons were killed in an attack on Kimakpa village, Miango district, in Bassa LGA of the state.

In a statement on Monday, Amnesty International said hundreds of people have been displaced since the incident, adding that residents are living in fear of the next possible attack.

The organisation noted that the patterns of recent attacks in the state show the Nigerian authorities have left the affected communities at the mercy of gunmen.

“The death toll after the gunmen’s attack on Zikke is now 54, as more dead bodies are being discovered in the bush. Mass burial is being planned as search for those missing is ongoing,” Amnesty said.

“Hundreds of people have been displaced since the attack last night. People of this area have been constantly living on the edge, bracing up for the next attack.”

Amnesty International noted that 1,336 people have been killed and 29,554 displaced in Plateau from December 2023 to February 2024.

The international rights watchdog called for a thorough investigation into the attack, noting that the security measures implemented by the President Bola Tinubu-led administration are not working.

On April 2, gunmen killed scores of residents in five communities under Bokkos and Mangu LGAs, leaving several houses destroyed. More than 50 bodies were reportedly recovered in the wake of the attack.
