Gunmen ambush DSS operatives in Imo, kill three, burn patrol vehicle

Gunmen ambushed and killed three operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in a brutal attack at Orodo community, near Nworieubi in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, approximately two weeks ago on June 13th.

According to reports from the scene, the DSS operatives were travelling in a patrol vehicle when they came under sudden attack. In an attempt to evade the assailants, their vehicle reportedly careened out of control and crashed into a nearby bush.

The armed attackers then unleashed a hail of bullets on the immobilized vehicle.

One DSS operative was killed instantly by the gunfire. The two other operatives, who sustained bullet wounds, managed to flee deeper into the surrounding bush.

The gunmen subsequently set the patrol vehicle ablaze, with the body of the fallen operative still inside. Eyewitnesses reported hearing the assailants repeatedly shouting “No Biafra! No Peace!” during the attack and arson.

Search efforts later located and recovered the bodies of the two wounded operatives who had fled into the bush, confirming the death toll at three DSS personnel.

As of now, neither the Nigeria Police Force nor the DSS has issued an official statement regarding the deadly ambush. However, many local observers believe the attack was likely carried out by gunmen suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who are reportedly camped in Ezioha, a small village within the same Mbaitoli LGA. The assailants’ chant during the attack further fueled these suspicions.
