58 killed in attacks in eastern DR Congo’s Ituri province

Fifty-eight people have been killed in attacks in a restive province of eastern DR Congo, local officials said on Thursday, blaming a notorious militia. Large numbers of the population have fled following the attacks in Irumu, a territory in the province of Ituri, provincial interior minister Adjio Gidi told AFP. He blamed the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which originated in the 1990s as a Ugandan Muslim rebel group and has been accused of killing hundreds of civilians since DR Congo’s armed forces launched a crackdown against them last November. The attacks took place in a heavily forested area called Tshabi, a local resident said, adding that a number of people were feared kidnapped. “People were killed with every sort of weapon, knives, guns,” a member of the Nyali community in Tshabi, Richard Balengilyao, told AFP. The search effort was being complicated by thick forest, he said. “Right now, the Congolese army, supported by local people, is still looking for victims in the forest,” he said. “Seventeen people are listed as disappeared, but they have almost definitely been kidnapped.” Minister Gidi said that 23 people were killed on Tuesday, and another 35 on Thursday. “It was ADF, fleeing military pressure in (neighbouring) North Kivu province, namely in (the) Beni (region),” Gidi said. “Our forces are already in the area and are in contact with the enemy,” he said without elaborating. Reprisals – The ADF is one of more than 100 armed groups that trouble the eastern provinces of the vast Democratic Republic of Congo, many of which are the legacy of fully-fledged wars of the 1990s. The group has been blamed for more than 1,000 civilian deaths in the Beni region of North Kivu province since 2014. It has carried out hundreds of civilian killings since the army launched an offensive against it late last year, apparently as reprisals for the operation or to warn locals against collaborating with the army. Meanwhile, the northern part of Ituri this year has seen brutal killings in the territory of Djugu, blamed on an armed group called the Cooperative for the Development of Congo, or CODECO, blamed on ethnic attacks. A senior delegation from the central government was scheduled to arrive in Ituri on Friday to discuss the province’s security problems. The delegation will include the interior and defence ministers, the army chief of staff and the head of internal intelligence, a government source told AFP. President Felix Tshisekedi sent a group of former warlords to Ituri last month to convince CODECO to stop its attacks. The armed political-religious sect is drawn from the Lendu ethnic group. Conflict erupted between the Lendu, mainly farmers, and the Hema, herders and traders, in the gold-mining and oil-rich Ituri province between 1999 and 2003, killing tens of thousands. The militia has for several months been divided, and some fighters have signed a commitment with the government to surrender arms. A peace agreement was also signed earlier this year with another armed group in the province, the Ituri Patriotic Resistance Force (FRPI), formerly active in the south in Irumu territory.

Petrol subsidy removal will save Nigeria N1trn, create jobs annually -Sylva.

Mr Timipre Sylva, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources says the Federal Government’s decision to fully remove subsidy from petrol will save the country ₦1trn annually and create massive jobs. Sylva, who said this on Thursday, while speaking with newsmen in Abuja, said that beginning from October, Nigerians “can now convert cars using petroleum to gas, which will be cheaper’’. “It is time for Nigerians to face reality and do the right thing. What is deregulation going to do? It is going to free up a lot more money. “At least from the very beginning, it will save us up to a trillion and more every year. “Already, we have taken off the budgetary provision for subsidy which is about N500 billion in the budget. “Also, we have taken off the excess forex price that special rate that was given to NNPC which also came at a cost. “So, all the money that we used to defend the Naira at that time to subsidise the dollar will now be freed up for development. “I believe that this discussion around subsidy has been a vexed issue that has captured the imagination of this country for a long time now,’’ the minister said. According to him, successive administrations have attempted to deregulate but sometimes, some administrations lacked the political will and at other times, the time was not good for it. “And why did I say that time was not good for it? Does that imply the time is good for it now? The problem around deregulation is that people must understand first that the product we are talking about is a derivative of crude oil. “It is refined from crude oil. Therefore, it has a direct relationship with the price of crude oil. If the price of crude oil goes up, then you expect that it would reflect in the price of the derivative. “So, the best time to achieve this we looked at was the time when crude oil prices are low so that Nigerians will get the benefit of those low prices,’’ he said. The minister recalled that in March, when the Federal Government announced the deregulation, the prices were low and that advantage was transferred to the consumer. “So, we brought down the price of petrol. The unfortunate thing is that when we brought down the price of petrol, nobody reacted in the market place. The prices were the same. “Nobody reduce their prices because price of petrol had reduced. Even bus fares, taxi fares were the same. It did not go down when we reduce the pump price of petrol. “We thought that those people in the market; the transport drivers and transport owners would reduce their price. But nobody reduce their prices,’’ the minister said. According to him, anytime there is even a kobo increase in the pump price of product, you see that people will increase their prices triple fold and four fold. Sylva said that the Federal Government was planning an alternative fuel to give the deregulation a human face. “To give it (deregulation) a human face, we are introducing an alternative fuel. We are giving auto gas. Gas will now become a fuel for our cars. This programme will be rolled out within the next one month. “So, if you go to a filling station and you convert your car to dual capability or dual fuel, then you drive into a typical filling station, you will find gas LPG, you find CNG and NLG being sold. “So, if you look at the price of PMS versus the price of gas and you think that gas is cheaper which of course, it is going to be cheaper. “Gas will even be cheaper that PMS as it is today. So you see that we are also giving an alternative to the ordinary Nigerians,’’ the minister said.

We have been able to avert food crisis despite Covid19 -Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Abuja said the COVID-19 pandemic exposed the level of preparedness of nations to shocks of food security, explaining that the Federal Government’s wisdom in promoting self-sufficiency over the years helped significantly in averting a food crisis. Speaking at the National Food Security Council meeting held at the State House, President Buhari noted that there was need for more effort to increase food production and self-sufficiency, assuring that the Federal Government will continue to promote policies that favour investments in the agricultural sector. “The coronavirus pandemic has illustrated more than any event in recent history how countries must strive harder to protect food systems. It has also exposed the limits of dependency on other countries. “In the last five years we have recorded notable achievements. Despite the decline in GDP by 6.1 per cent in Q2 of 2020 as a direct result of coronavirus, the agricultural sector continued to grow because of government targeted policies.’’ President Buhari, who commended Nigerian farmers for contributing to the stability in food security, said the favourable rainy seasons should serve as encouragement for many to take up farming as a vocation. “I am pleased to note that most Nigerians are taking advantage of the opportunities in the agriculture and agric-business sector. I want to assure you that this government will continue to support these initiatives and many more to come.’’ The President also said efforts will be channeled to innovative ways of farming that will guarantee maximum output. “To protect agricultural investments and boost confidence to our farmers we have deployed thousands of agro-rangers and integrated rural communities to the formal economy by extending access to credit and inputs to rural farmers and building feeder roads. “We have invested in building our strategic grain reserves in recent years which we recently released significant quantities to cushion the adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic to vulnerable households and industries,’’ the President said. President Buhari sympathized with farmers and families that lost loved ones to recent floods in the country, assuring that the government will support those that were affected.

Gunmen attack Abuja community, kidnap scores

Unknown gunmen on Thursday kidnapped scores of residents of Tungan Maje village , a community bordering the Federal Capital Territory and Niger State . Five dead as Colombians protest police killing

Five people have died in protests and riots that broke out in Bogota following the death of a man who was repeatedly tasered by police, authorities said Thursday. Demonstrators took to the streets of the Colombian capital on Wednesday after video emerged of Javier Ordonez pleading with uniformed officers, who shocked him with the weapon at least five times as he lay on the ground. Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo offered a reward for “ the capture of the perpetrators of the murder of five people” during the unrest in Bogota and the neighboring municipality of Soacha . The minister said he would bolster law enforcement in the capital city of more than seven million by sending in hundreds of soldiers and military police officers. Bogota authorities said 46 police posts were destroyed during the violence, as well as dozens of public buses. Ordonez , a 46- year- old father of two , is heard repeatedly crying “ please , no more ” in the widely circulated footage of his arrest. He was taken to a police station and transferred to a local medical facility but died soon afterward. “ We express our sorrow for the death of Javier Ordonez and offer our solidarity with his family, ” Trujillo said . “ The national government will continue to cooperate with the authorities so that the facts are established as soon as possible . ” For many Colombians , the case evoked the killing in the US in May of African American George Floyd, also 46, who suffocated after being pinned by the neck to the pavement under the knee of a white officer . Floyd ’ s plea that “ I can’ t breathe” has become emblematic of police brutality toward black Americans, burnished on banners and T -shirts at protests that continue to roil the US. AFP

People praising Buhari are liars, hypocrites – Islamic cleric

An influential Islamic cleric , Sheik Murtala Sokoto , says the President Muhammadu Buhari has failed , adding that those who are still praising him saying ‘ Sai baba ’ , are liars and hypocrites . Sokoto said this while delivering a sermon to some Muslim youths. In the video which was obtained by Sahara Reporters, the cleric said Buhari could no longer visit his home state of Katsina because of the anger and frustration of the people . He said even though Buhari had appointed many northerners into key positions , those who were given such positions had also betrayed the people. The cleric stated, “ All those saying ‘ Sai Baba’ Sai Baba, are liars, useless hypocrites . The man they called ‘ Sai Baba’ now cannot even go to Katsina . He ( Buhari ) knows the anger that will greet him if he goes to Katsina. “ We are praying that Allah guide General Buhari to make amends, to do better as a leader , but if he continues in his ways , we pray Allah to replace him with a better leader . The peak of stupidity is when these people say northerners have been given juicy positions , but those given these juicy positions have betrayed everyone. ” Sokoto stated that the poor were on the receiving end as they could no longer go to their farms due to the high level of insecurity . He said when these poor farmers go to the farm , they get kidnapped and huge ransoms are demanded from them . Sokoto added , “ Rice, can we feed ourselves? How? They said people should go to the farm but when you go to the farm you will be kidnapped . You ( Buhari ) said we should cultivate our farms in the North, go and see all over the North. An example is Katsina , go to Sokoto, Zamfara . “ In these places , those who go to the farm are always abducted by criminals and a ransom of N 2m to N 3m will be made …! How can a village farmer afford N 3m ? Are we really serious? Because of cruelty and wickedness , they are saying we should be patient , but for how long shall we be more patient ? Patience is something the prophet has given us conditions for . We have had enough of this oppressive government . ” Sokoto said no one should accept the lame excuse that the suffering of the people was the will of Allah. The cleric said with food shortages caused by the inability of farmers to harvest their crops , they hoped to import food but Buhari ordered the closure of all land borders which worsened their plight. He said , “ We will continue to talk about Zakkat , but first I have to talk to you about the difficult situation our country is in now . The country is in disarray. Is this country not already in trouble ? Is that not true? The old man ( Buhari ) had pushed us all to the wall . Hasn ’ t he pushed us to the wall ? Hasn ’ t he ? Whatever noise that will be made , whatever evil sermon they are giving you is useless. Don’ t listen to those stupid excuses that it is Allah that is putting us through this . “ If you believe this illogic ; go and take a sword and slaughter a human being and then claim it is Allah that caused it . He who was merciful to people , Allah, will be merciful to him . What point am I trying to make? “ The point is , the poverty and hardship we are facing now are caused by the Federal Government . They claimed there was hardship during the prophet ’ s time but our suffering today is because borders have been closed . We get food through these borders but they have been closed out of the cruelty of Buhari . ” Sokoto noted that during the electioneering , the poor contributed money to Buhari ’ s campaign with the hope that he would put them first . He called on Buhari to immediately change his ways or he will pray to God to remove him. “ Poor Nigerians have you in their tongues every day. They contributed N 5, 000, N 2, 000 they financed the campaign of General Buhari . But they are being paid with suffering . Sunnah clerics told us Buhari is a good person , but what we have now is a different Buhari . We pray Buhari changes for better, if not we will pray to Allah to remove him . ” Hundreds of youths had taken to the streets of Katsina in June , lambasting the President and defacing his billboards for failing to address the insecurity in the state. Some of the youths were arrested by the police for embarrassing the President but were later released. Global rights group , Amnesty International , had in a report last month stated that 1, 126 villagers were killed in Kaduna , Katsina, Niger, Zamfara , Plateau , Sokoto, and Taraba States between January and June 2020.

Gana Killing: Why we will not reply Suswan ,Ortom -Army

The Nigerian Military on Thursday disclosed that it would not join issues with the Benue State governor, Mr Samuel Ortom, and a former governor of the state, Senator Gabriel Suswan, over the killing of the most wanted criminal and militia gang leader in Benue state, Terwase Agwaza aka Gana, by Special Forces of the Nigerian Army. While the military said Gana was killed following a shootout with troops, the Benue state government said, Gana and about 40 other militias had agreed to surrender in accordance to Benue state Amnesty programme and were on their way to Makurdi for the programme when they were arrested. Senator Gabriel Suswan representing Benue North East Senatorial District, faulted the killing of Gana saying, “The soldiers’ action could frustrate the peace already being achieved in the state following Gana’s decision to embrace dialogue and to surrender his arms. However, the Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Major General John Enenche when asked to clarify what really transpired regarding Gana’s death, said, “It is not proper for us or I as the Coordinator of DMO to join issues with the Governor of the state and the Senator. “I am not permitted by ethical standards to join issues with what my political masters have said or done. By Section 217 of the constitution, we are subordinated to our political masters”. “I want to appeal to you that every issue that has been taking up before now, I should be left out of it. I’m aware that the governor made a statement and one of the Senators also made a statement and like I told you during time of Borno State, when Senator Ndume spoke and another of one spoke, I said that it is not proper to join issues with the top, so if I comment now. You will now go and use it and join me as if I’m an umpire. “Please spear me that. If there was no reaction from there, I could have answered you but my political masters have taken up and have spoken. “I also in the media terrain like you. So I’m not permitted by ethical standards to talk about when my superiors have spoken out. “Quote me by ethical standards it is not done, I’m to subordinate to constituted authority. As the Coordinator Defence Media Operations, if you had asked that question may be the same Tuesday it happened, maybe I would have had an answer for you but for now let us not persist till it becomes confrontational. “I am good at monitoring the media so I am not ignorant of what has happened it was on Channels TV, it was in the Newspapers. Recall that following the killing of Terwase Agwaza who had been declared wanted by both the Benue state government and the Nigerian Police, several reactions have disagreed on his mode of killing. While calling on the Federal Government to set up a judicial panel to unravel the cause of Gana by soldiers, Senator Suswan noted that “Even war criminals captured alive are entitled to certain rights. He said, “The claim that Gana was killed in a gunfight needs further explanations because those who accompanied him and who watched him being taken away, including his local government chairman, do not believe he was in possession of any arms. “An independent judicial commission of inquiry will unravel facts of the matter to serve as lessons for the future.” Continuing Suswan said, “The events of September 8, 2020, in my senatorial district where repentant criminals who had surrendered after extensive persuasions, were singled out and killed. extra-judicially leaves a sour taste and has opened a gaping wound that requires all efforts to heal. “It is no secret that my senatorial district has been traumatized and the people terrorized by activities of criminal gangs led by Mr. Terwase Agwaza alias Gana for many years. “The consequences of this endless terrorism have been a steady decline of economic and social activities leaving a once prosperous people pauperized. “Markets no longer attract traders, schools are closed and farmlands abandoned. Politics in the area has become a war with uncontrolled proliferation of dangerous weapons. “No responsible leader will idly stand by and watch his community become a theater of war and a gangster’s paradise. “It is with this solution mindset that traditional rulers, clergymen and elders of the area decided to utilize means of constructive engagement and dialogue to ensure that youths of the area do not become tools for the destruction of that society. “The Benue State Government and security agencies have long desired for a return to normalcy, peace, prosperity and security of the area. “That is why some leaders were mandated to reach out to these outlaws to persuade them to drop their arms and channel their energies towards the rebuilding of our thoroughly battered community. “We were all excited to see the dreaded Gana come out of hiding to the warm embrace of our traditional rulers, clerics and political leaders at a public function at the Akume Atongo Stadium in Katsina-Ala. “Our joy was multiplied when we saw him along with his militia surrender arms and publicity renounces a life of crime. Our revered king extracted a pledge from him never to turn his kingdom into a wasteland. “Those present at this forum heaved a great sigh of relief with the thought that finally, a life full of uncertainty has come to an end. Consequently, “I was totally dumbfounded to learn that while Gana was on his way to Makurdi the state capital to present himself to the state governor who was waiting, his long convoy that included political leaders, traditional rulers, clergymen and security agencies were ambushed by allegedly armed soldiers and he was isolated and taken away. “In the midst of the confusion, pictures began to circulate on social media of the bullet-ridden body of Gana with a rifle callously placed on his side. “While I have been consistent in condemning the reign of terror he unleashed

Man kills step son in Jigawa, lands in trouble

The Jigawa Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested a 40-year-old man identified as Usman Isma’il for allegedly killing his 17-month-old step son, Adamu Gambo, in Miga Local Government Area of the state. The NSCDC Spokesman in the state, SC Adamu Shehu, confirmed the incident to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Thursday. Shehu said the suspect, a resident of Tsakuwama Village, was arrested by the NSCDC operatives on Sept. 3, at about 4 p.m. He explained that the suspect allegedly took the deceased to a farm on Aug. 14 and strangled him to death. “The operatives of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Miga arrested one Usman Sama’ila of Duja ward, Tsakuwama Village, Miga Local Government Area for alleged murder of his 17-month-old stepson. “The suspect was arrested on Sept. 3, around 4 p.m., while the incident occurred on Aug. 14 when the suspect was alleged to have taken the deceased identified as Adamu Gambo to a farm and strangled him which eventually led to his death. “The suspect tried to cover his heinous act by relating the child’s death to cold related infections. “However, his wife suspected foul play, and according to her, her husband (suspect) attempted to strangle the poor child about two times, of which the second attempt was in her presence, due to his intense dislike for the child, but was not successful. “And after thorough interrogation by the Intelligence and Investigation team of the command, the suspect confessed to have committed the crime, saying that the baby distracted his wife from giving him (suspect) the love and attention he needed,” he explained. The spokesman added that preliminary medical examination on the suspect’s mental condition revealed no trace of mental disorder, saying that the suspect would be taken to a Psychiatric Hospital to properly ascertain his mental health status. According to him, the suspect will be charged to court after completion of investigation.

Mali Military Junta Launches ‘Consultation’ Amid Pressure Over Handover

Mali’s military junta on Thursday launches a three-day “national consultation” with political parties, unions and NGOs, facing questions at home and pressure from abroad over its plans for returning the country to civilian rule. Around 500 people are due to attend the forum, unfolding at a conference centre in Bamako, the capital of the West African state. The talks mark the second round of discussions between the young officers who overthrew President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita on August 18 and civilian representatives, many of whom had campaigned fiercely for him to resign. At stake is how the junta intends to make good on its vow, made just hours after the coup, to restore civilian governance and stage elections within a “reasonable time.” Early jubilation among many Malians over Keita’s exit has been superseded by questions and also divisions about the speed of the handover and the military’s role in the transition period. The coup — Mali’s fourth since gaining independence from France in 1960 — came after months of protests, stoked by Keita’s failure to roll back a bloody jihadist insurgency and fix the country’s many economic woes. Mali’s neighbours have watched with concern, fearing the country could spiral back into chaos — a scenario that eight years ago helped fuel the jihadist revolt which now rattles Niger and Burkina Faso. The junta initially talked of a three-year transition, corresponding to the time left in Keita’s second five-year mandate, that would be overseen by a soldier. In contrast, the 15-nation regional bloc ECOWAS has set a hard-line, closing borders, banning trade with Mali and insisting that the handover last 12 months maximum. In the runup to the talks, the group said Mali’s civilian transition president and premier “must be appointed no later than September 15”. The so-called June 5 Movement, which engineered the wave of anti-Keita protests, is split. Some voices argue in favour of giving the military a long handover in order to tackle the problems that have driven the country to the brink. Others say that this would simply worsen instability — four more Malian troops were killed in an attack on the eve of the talks — and set a poor example for democracy in West Africa. A committee of around 20 lawyers, researchers and academics has drawn up a draft “road map” resulting from a first round of talks on Saturday. This document will be put to the forum “for amendment, improvement and enrichment”, its chair, Diarra Fatoumata Dembele, told AFP. AFP
