Ogwu has become the third person to be killed by gunmen in Ayangba Community within four months. Residents of the university community are now living in fear as insecurity continues. Herdsmen: We are discussing with CBN for security funding ― Cassava farmer The National President of Nigeria Cassava Growers Association (NCGA), Pastor Segun Adewumi, has said that following the fear of herdsmen attack, most farmer leaders now go to farms with police escorts. He said the situation has deteriorated that most farmers have abandoned their farms despite collecting loans to set up the farms. Speaking with Tribune Online, Pastor Adewumi said he has been receiving several reports of attack on his members by suspected Fulani herdsmen while on their farms. He said they are in talks with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for additional funding for farmers to provide security for their farms. “We have this issue of herdsmen attack, our farmers said that some of them will uproot cassava and give it raw to their cow. The fear of kidnapping and attack doesn’t allow people to go to the farm, so most of our farms have been abandoned. “Unfortunately, loans were taken to set up most of these farms but in the long run, we have to abandon them. We have been talking to the Central Bank of Nigeria for an additional fund for security of the farm, but it is not all the herdsmen that are bad. “Most farmers cannot go to farms because of fear of kidnapping, even most of us who are farmer leaders we used to go to farms with police escorts and a lot of escorts, so how do we grow food?” The NCGA President said in some countries that are into dairy production, open grazing isn’t practised over there, and they get maximum output from their animals. “We have seen what is happening in many other countries of the world, I understand that dairy product is one of the main income earners for India, in Ireland, they were one of the net importers of

Femi Adesina To Obasanjo: You Are A Total Idiot

Mr Femi Adesina, Special Adviser To The President on Media and Publicity, has shared an experience on how President Muhammadu Buhari elevated Yakubu Pam, former Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Plateau State, who was allegedly denigrated by ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo. In his weekly article, the Presidential Spokesman recalled an encounter between Obasanjo and Pam in 2004. He said when the former president visited Plateau over a religious crisis in the state, he talked condescendingly on Pam, whom he allegedly described as a “total idiot”. “Let’s go back in time to May 2004, when the lands of Yelwa-Shendam, in Plateau State, had turned crimson. Primitive fury and hatred were unleashed, leading to internecine bloodbath. Hundreds and hundreds of people were killed along religious lines.” “While the place was turned into killing fields, the then President Olusegun MATTHEW Obasanjo (emphasis on that middle name) visited, and met with the different stakeholders. “During the dialogue session, the then Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Plateau State asked a question the President found offensive. And the Owu man, a retired Army General, flew off the handle. He let out this fusillade: “What role have you played to bring about peace as CAN Chairman in Plateau State? CAN, my foot! What kind of CAN Chairman are you? Did your own Christianity teach you about revenge? You are an idiot. A total idiot. And I have no apologies for that. “Pin-drop silence. Strange things do happen in Nigeria. But it had never been seen like that. For a father of the country to publicly excoriate a religious leader? For a Matthew to call a preacher an idiot, “a total idiot?” It was sacrilege walking on two legs,” Adesina wrote. Adesina, who described Pam as a man of peace, added that to worsen matters, security agencies had asked the cleric to apologise to Obasanjo over the encounter. He said years later, Obasanjo left power while Pam moved to other issues until Buhari appointed him the Executive Secretary of Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC) in 2020. The Presidential Spokesman narrated how he and Pam were together at the presidential villa in Abuja. “A tale of the priest and two Presidents. Publicly flagellated by one, a Matthew, and now, honored by the other, a Muhammadu. What Rev Pam didn’t get from a Christian, he got from a Fulani man from Daura, a Muslim. Is there any lesson we can learn from this? Think about it. “A couple of weeks back, precisely on January 14, 2021, Rev Pam was at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, leading an NCPC team on a courtesy visit to the President. An idiot, “a total idiot” was at the seat of power, being treated with the dignity he deserved, by a man of a different faith. Holy Moses! “I tell you, this Rev Pam, from Gyel, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State is a reconciliator, a peace advocate, and that is why God has lifted him up today. And not through a Matthew, but a Muhammadu, one against whom all lies under the sun have been told: he’s a religious bigot. A herdsman. A nepotist. Jihadist. Everything. May God forgive those who condemn the person they don’t know, and have refused to know,” Adesina wrote.

Police: Kano barber arrested for rape, not blasphemy

Elijah Ode, a barber in Kano widely reported on Wednesday to have been arrested for blasphemy, was arrested for a different offence, the police said. Police PRO in Kano, Abdullahi Haruna said the man was arrested over an alleged rape. He told a P.M.NEWS special correspondent in Kano it was some people who wanted to cause trouble that said he was arrested for alleged blasphemy. An official of Hisbah in Kano had also denied Ode’s arrest, when the correspondent sought the agency’s response. “We don’t have any one like that with us”, the official said. Hisbah is the Sharia Police and would have been the arresting authority in the first instance, in the case of an accusation of blasphemy. Ode from Adum East, Obi LGA of Benue State, lives in Sabon Gari in the city of Kano. Reports had said he was accused of blasphemy by religious extremists, in the course of his work as a barber. Here is what the report said: Elijah, who is well patronized by young people for possessing exceptional skills in trendy haircuts, attracted the wrath of the extremists last week Wednesday when two of his customers were tortured to stupor for designs claimed to be blasphemous to the Islamic religion. “Thereupon, Elijah was traced to his barbershop, where he was arrested for complicity, and has been in Police detention with the two customers since last week. “According to information obtained from his cousin, Mr Sunday Ukenya, the young barber did not design the hairstyles with the intention to provoke. “He said he was only being innovative doing his work as usual to eke a living and pay his fees at his tertiary institution of study in Kano, where he sponsors himself. “Ukenya also added that the case is already in the court of law at the wish of the aggrieved Muslims with first session being yesterday. “He expressed sadness, however, that all efforts by the young barber’s lawyer to bail him proved abortive for the claim that it is a major case and is as a result not bailable”.

Tenure Elongation: What We Have Now Is Retired IG Illegally Occupying Office — Ozekhome

Constitutional lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ozekhome has described as unconstitutional and illegal the tenure elongation of Mohammed Adamu as Inspector General of Police, saying that as it is, Adamu is a retired Inspector General of Police illegally occupying that office. Ozekhome said this when he appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today to comment on President Buhari extending the tenure of Mohammed Adamu by three months. The Minister of Police Affairs, Maigari Dingyadi had disclosed the development on Thursday while briefing State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He said that the decision of the President to extend the IGP’s tenure for another three months was to give time for proper selection of the new helmsman. Citing Section 215 (1) of the 1999 Constitution, Section 216 (2) of the 1999 Constitution and paragraph 27 to the 3rd schedule of the 1999 Constitution, Ozekhome said Buhari does not even have the power to single-handedly appoint or dismiss an Inspector General of Police as it has been. He said such action must be carried out with full consultation and at a meeting with the Nigeria Police Council. He said: “Mr president’s action is patently, glaringly illegal, unconstitutional and immoral because he is denying other members of the Nigeria Police Force who are also aspiring to go up to become Inspector Generals.” According to him, in the eyes of the law as it stands, there is no Inspector General of Police and what we have now is a retired Inspector General of Police illegally occupying the office. “In the eye of the law, there is no Inspector General of Police. What he have there is somebody, a retired Inspector General of Police illegally occupying the office just as Mr Magu has illegally occupied his office as acting chairman of EFCC even after he was rejected two times based on damning report by the DSS of this same government which said he failed the integrity test. “We do not have an Inspector General of Police because the last one has retired by effluxion of time, statutorily and constitutionally. So Mr President cannot by an administrative fiat recreate the law. The only organ that can remake the law is the National Assembly.” He advised that the only way President Buhari can remedy the situation is by withdrawing the tenure elongation and appointing someone from the serving AIGs.

Sheikh Gummi: Insurgency not banditry is in Zamfara

A renowned Islamic Scholar Sheikh Dr Ahmed Mahmoud Gummi has said that “ what is currently happening in Zamfara is insurgency and not banditry” . Gummi, who briefed Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State at Government House today, said the bandits have completely turned into insurgents following the bad treatment from the people of the state. “ In most of the bandits and Fulani camps we have visited in Zamfara , I come to understand that what is happening in the state is nothing but an insurgency , ” he said . Gummi maintained that most of the bandits he came across during his visit to Zamfara forests were only carrying weapons and attacking people because of persistent attacks and harassment from the vigilante group known as the Yansakai . Gummi stated that most of the bandits he interacted with during his visit had indicated their readiness to surrender their weapons and embrace peace if the Yansakai stopped attacking and killing them . He appealed to governments at all levels to embrace dialogue with the bandits and other insurgents in the country , expressing optimism that “ dialogue is the only option to end the menace” . He commended Governor Matawalle for introducing dialogue with the bandits as a means of ending banditry , calling on other governors to emulate him . “ Some people are of the view that the bandits should be fought and killed, but what we understand is that majority of them are illiterates who need proper education and enlightenment, ” he said . He stressed that the steps taken by the Zamfara State Government through dialogue were the best option. In his response, Governor Matawalle said his administration would continue to dialogue with the bandits no matter what his political opponents would say .

Nothing wrong with Buhari nominating ex-Service Chiefs as ambassador designates, says NEF

The Northern Elders Forum, NEF, on Thursday night, said there was nothing wrong with President Muhammadu Buhari nominating any citizen, including the immediate past service chiefs, for the position of an ambassador so long as such a person remained acceptable and worthy of the office. NEF’s Director of Publicity and Advocacy, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, stated this in a chat with Vanguard in Abuja. There have been concerns over the nomination of Gen Abayomi G. Olonisakin (retd ), Lt Gen Tukur Y. Buratai (retd), Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (retd), and Air Vice Marshal Mohammed S. Usman (retd) as non-career ambassador-designates barely two weeks after they retired from the military. There have also been speculations that their nomination was to shield them from investigation for alleged crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court, ICC. When asked whether the Forum welcomed President Buhari’s forwarding of the names of the immediate past service chiefs to the Senate for confirmation as ambassador-designates, the NEF’s spokesman said, “It is the constitutional responsibility of the president to nominate people who he believes are deserving to represent the country, and that of the National Assembly to scrutinize the nominations and decide on them. “What is important is to ensure that people who will be our representatives in other countries are persons with the highest personal and professional credentials and character.” On the speculation that the nomination of the ex-service chiefs was to provide them with diplomatic immunity, Baba-Ahmed said: “We would not put much value on speculations that the appointments are to shield them from international laws. These laws apply to people in or out of office.”
