COVAX donates 16m doses of COVID-19 vaccine to Nigeria

COVAX, the global alliance against COVID-19, has donated a total of 16,008,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine to Nigeria. In a distribution forecast published on Wednesday, the coalition said the AstraZaneca/Oxford vaccine doses will cover the first half of 2021. A total of 336 million doses were announced to be donated to over 120 countries. COVAX, which is co-led by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and GAVI Alliance, was launched in 2020 to mobilise resources for innovative and equitable access to COVID-19 diagnostics, treatments and vaccines. It said delivery of the vaccines in Nigeria is estimated to begin as of late February. Between 35 and 40 percent of the doses are expected in the first quarter of the year while the remaining are due in the second quarter. The coalition, however, added that the donation is under indicative distribution, meaning that it only provides interim guidance to countries and may be subject to change. It also said the interim distribution plan was announced in anticipation of the WHO emergency use listing (EUL) yet to be granted for the AstraZeneca vaccine. The vaccine is licensed to Serum Institute of India (SII) and was donated under the advance market commitment (AMC) plan to make them available to low-income countries. Since December 2020, Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines have been rolled out in various countries amid efforts to combat the coronavirus pandemic. But Nigeria has largely been left out; the country has not taken delivery of any vaccine yet unlike countries like South Africa which already received one million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine. Globally, about 104 million shots of various COIVD-19 vaccines have been administered, with roughly one in three given in the US.

No plan to field Jonathan as our presidential candidate in 2023 but…, says APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said it has no plan to field former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2023 as its presidential standard-bearer as it is being speculated. There were reports last week that some Northern APC governors who visited Jonathan last week assured him of plan to give him the party’s ticket in 2023. Yobe State governor, Mai Mala Buni, who is also the interim committee of the party, cleared the air on the reports in an interview with Hausa service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) on Wednesday. He, however, said it would be a new discussion entirely whether Jonathan would be welcomed if he eventually indicates interest. According to him, there was no truth in the reports, saying those peddling such information are afraid. “Those peddling such information are afraid. But for now, there is nothing in the APC which has anything to do with the aspiration for 2023. “Even if someone wants to base assumption on our recent visit to him during his birthday, we were there because of his status as a former president of Nigeria. “Again, even when we are talking of peaceful coexistence, we must give credit to former President Jonathan on the issue of peace. “How he accepted defeat in 2015 and resigned to fate. That has qualified him to be a statesman and he is now among our fathers.” Governor Buni said it is customary to visit one another and exchange pleasantries. “Our visit to Jonathan was because of his status as a former president, that could be why some may think there was something beneath. There are numerous of such visits, to leaders of PDP, APC, why are others not being mentioned but Jonathan?” When asked whether the APC would welcome Jonathan if he eventually indicates interest, Buni said that would be a new discussion entirely. “Even in America where we got this democracy, I’ve not seen where people are being confined to a limit.

While Akinmeji was kidnapped on his farm at Okeji farm settlement last Saturday, Adejuyigbe who was part of the search party organised to secure the release of Akinmeji was killed in the kidnappers’ den in the forest It was gathered that Akinmeji was on his farm with some other workers when the hoodlums invaded his farm and abducted him while others escaped being abducted. The development led the youths of the town and members of the OPC to form a search party to secure the release of the farmer but Adejuyigbe was said to be missing during the process. Members of the OPC, the youths and the officials of the Ondo State Security Network, Amotekun, returned to the forest and the remains of the OPC member were found inside a shed in the bush. Retirement: Lawyer Drags IGP Adamu To Court

An Abuja based lawyer, Maxwell Okpara, has asked a Federal High Court in Abuja to stop Mohammed Adamu from parading himself as the Inspector General of Police. The lawyer has also asked the court to restrain Adamu from exercising any form of command over officers of the Nigeria Police Force. Okpara, who also joined President Muhammadu Buhari, IGP Adamu, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, and the Nigerian Police Council, stated that Adamu’s tenure had elapsed on February 1, 2021, by virtue of the Police Act. In the suit brought by his counsel, Ugochukwu Ezekiel Esq, the lawyer argues that by provisions of section 215, 216 and 7 of the Nigeria Police Act, 2020, Adamu cannot continue to function as IG after February 1, 2021. The lawyer sought; “a declaration that the failure of the 1st defendant (President Buhari) and 4th defendant (Nigeria Police Council) to appoint an Inspector General of Police as at the 1st day of February 2021 constitutes an abdication of their duties under Section 215 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Section 7 of the Nigeria Police Act 2020.” Adamu’s tenure lapsed on February 1, 2021, after completing 35 years in office as a police officer as required by the Nigeria Police Act. Adamu had, on Monday, met with senior police officers at the Louis Edet House, headquarters of the police in Abuja, and briefed them over the intricate succession crisis. Adamu did not hand over the reins of leadership despite completing his 35 years as a police officer on Monday. Daily Trust reported on Monday that Adamu is unlikely to get an extension for the job, despite his lobby as President Muhammadu Buhari was said to be perusing a shortlist. Amidst the confusion, the Presidency, on Monday, assured that there would not be a vacuum in the position. A spokesperson for President Muhammadu Buhari, Garba Shehu, who gave the assurance, however, did not say when a decision will be taken by the president. Two days after that assurance the IGP is yet to hand over to anyone. Checks by Daily Trust showed that a number of Adamu’s course mates who retired on Monday did not attend to official duties. Some of them stayed away from their offices. However, those of them in Abuja were summoned to attend the briefing with the IGP. Reliable sources told Daily Trust that the IGP reported to the office late in the morning and also presided over a short meeting with members of the police management team and other senior officials.

If Southerners reject you, come back to North, Northern elders tell Fulani

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has told the Fulani community in the Southern part of the country to return to the North if they are forcefully ejected from the communities they reside in. The Elders also called on the northern governors to be ready to receive the Fulani community who would return as a result of forceful ejection from where they reside in the South. This is contained in a statement issued by Director, Publicity and Advocacy of NEF, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed. NEF expressed concern over the reports of ejections threats and attacks on Fulani herders, families and communities in some states of the South. The Forum said it has advised Fulani communities to seek protection where it is available and to resist the temptation to take the law into their own hands. “It is necessary to warn people who threaten law-abiding Fulani communities in all parts of Nigeria, but particularly in some parts of the South, to desist. “The vast majority of Fulani are law-abiding and have rights to live lawfully wherever they can find means of subsistence. Like all Nigerians who can be found in every inch of Nigeria, the rights of the Fulani will not be abridged by criminals hiding behind ethnic interests to exterminate them. “Citizens and groups who play the role of police and other law-enforcement agencies are committing crimes, and they must be stopped by leaders who are sworn to protect the law and security of all Nigerians”, the statement said. NEF, therefore, said “If communities in parts of the country insist that the lawful Fulani is unwelcome and has no right to their security, then the Forum will advise them to relocate to the North. Northern Governors should move urgently to prepare to receive Fulani communities being forcefully ejected. The Forum, however, called on President Muhammadu Buhari and State Governors to take immediate and decisive steps to protect law-abiding members of Fulani communities from those believe that Fulani has no rights in Nigeria. “The Forum demands that the Nigeria Police must live up to its constitutional responsibility to detect crimes and arrest and prosecute criminals, whoever they are. “States which seek to limit criminal activities are perfectly entitled to do so, but they must follow due process, and avoid exposing innocent citizens to danger at all cost,” the statement noted. “The Forum appeals again for all Nigerians to exercise restraint and not to play into the hands of people who desire to achieve dubious political goals by pitching citizens against each other. Persons who inflame passions by circulating videos and other materials should also desist,” the statement added.
