He explained that the seven deaths were recorded at the Wassa community (Internally Displaced Persons’ camp) in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC). Kawu added: “A total of 91 suspected cases have so far been enlisted with seven deaths in AMAC; no death in Gwagwalada and Bwari area councils. “Out of these, three of the cases tested positive for cholera using the rapid diagnostic test kit” The acting secretary said the FCT’s heath secretariat through the Department of Public Health had intensified surveillance in the communities and health facilities and had also directed the area councils to do the same. IPOB, ESN after terrorists, not northerners, Emma Powerful tells Gumi

The Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) have maintained that they are after terrorists and not northerners as earlier alleged by an Islamic cleric, Sheikh Abubakar Gumi. The group disclosed this in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Comrade Emma Powerful, made available to newsmen in Abakaliki. According to Powerful, ESN is a child of necessity created for the defence of Biafra’s ancestral land against terrorists and killer herdsmen wreaking havoc across the communities. Powerful then called on Gumi to desist from twisting the real facts as there is no iota of truth in the mischievous and fallacious claim. He further called for the arrest and investigation of the cleric following his ties with bandits. The statement reads: “The attention of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra IPOB, led by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has been drawn to the latest ranting and ridiculous claims by Sheikh Abubakar Gumi, that IPOB, and Eastern Security Network, ESN, were killing Northerners. There is no iota of truth in such mischievous and fallacious claims. “In case the self-acclaimed Islamic cleric has forgotten, may we remind him that neither IPOB nor ESN is a terrorist organization or killers. Spilling of blood is never part of our mandate. “ESN is only defending our hapless mothers and sisters who have been raped, maimed and attacked without any justification by herdsmen. “Since December 2020 when ESN was set up by our leader, these vampires have been on the run because of the heat from our gallant operatives across Biafran forests. For Sheikh Gumi who never gave a hoot while killer herdsmen rampaged our communities to try to twist the fact now is not only mischief but also an act of terror itself. “No Northerner in any part of Biafra land can prove that he/she has at any time been attacked by IPOB or ESN. We are only chasing terrorists and bandits behind killings and kidnapping for ransom in our land. “Gumi should be ashamed that an Islamic cleric as he claims has suddenly become a mouthpiece for bandits and terrorists. Why does Gumi have a special interest in bandits and terrorists? Why is Gumi always advocating for terrorists and negotiating with them but never advanced the cause of victims of terror? What does Sheikh Gunmi have in common with bandits and terrorists?”

Court slates July 21 to hear suit seeking Buhari’s sack from office

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has fixed July 21, 2021, to hear a suit filed against President Muhammadu Buhari by a former Presidential candidate, Chief Ambrose Albert Owuru, seeking an order of the court declaring the Presidential seat vacant. The date has been communicated to parties in the suit through hearing notices served on them by the court bailiff. The Chief Judge of the court, Justice John Tsoho, assigned the case to Justice Inyang Ekwo for hearing and determination. Joined alongside President Buhari in the suit marked, FHC/ABJ/CS/480/2021 are the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as first, second and third defendants respectfully. The former presidential candidate wants the court to make an order declaring the Presidency vacant on the ground that Buhari was not the winner of the February 2019 presidential election. Owuru is asking the court to declare Buhari as unlawful President, illegally occupying the Presidential seat. The plaintiff, who stood for the 2019 Presidential election on the platform of the Hope Democratic Party (HDP) wants the court to declare him as the authentic winner of the poll and another order directing his immediate inauguration to take over from Buhari. In the suit he filed on June 16. 2021, Owuru claimed that he won the February 16. 2019 Presidential election and that his suit against Buhari at the Supreme Court was inconclusive due to errors on the adjourned date and added that he is entitled to serve out a tenure of four years after his formal inauguration. Among other reliefs, the ex-presidential candidate wants Buhari removed from office with immediate effect and also be ordered to refund all salaries allowances and emoluments he collected while being unlawfully in office as President. Owuru pleaded with the court to give an order that salaries, allowances and emoluments be paid to him from May 29. 2019 when he ought to have been sworn in till date. The plaintiff further applied for an order of perpetual injunction restraining Buhari, AGF and INEC from further organising and conducting any Presidential election in 2023 so as to enable him to complete his four-year term when inaugurated.

About 350,000 people have been killed by insurgents in North-East, says UN

North-East Nigeria’s conflict with Islamist insurgencies had killed nearly 350,000 people as of the end of 2020, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said on Thursday, Reuters reported. The toll, given by the UN agency in a new study on the war and its impact on livelihoods is 10 times higher than previous estimates of about 35,000 based only on those killed in fighting in Nigeria since the conflict’s start 12 years ago. “The full human cost of the war is much greater,” the UNDP said in a report, released with Nigeria’s Ministry of Finance. “Already, many more have died from the indirect effects of the conflict,” said the UNDP, citing damage to agriculture, water, trade, food and healthcare. A Nigerian presidential spokesman declined to comment on the death toll. Nigeria’s war with Islamist insurgencies Boko Haram and Islamic State’s West Africa Province has spawned one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with millions of people dependent on aid. The conflict shows little sign of ending. Children younger than five account for more than nine out of 10 of those killed, with 170 dying every day, the UNDP said. If the conflict continues to 2030, more than 1.1 million people may die, the agency said. “Destruction and displacement have set back development in the region by decades, and continued conflict will only further scar the region,” the UNDP said.

Panic as suspected cultists give school principal 24 hours to recall suspended members

There is palpable fear in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital, as suspected cultists have issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the principal of Uyo High School, Mr. Michael Iwok for him to recall their suspended members back to school. As a warning, some fetish objects such as fresh pepper, palm oil droplets, peeled cooked egg, palm front, a piece of red cloth, tied rope and ten naira notes were on Thursday dropped at the entrance of the principal’s office. Similar items and several inscriptions, believed to have been dropped by suspected cultists, were also seen at the entrance to Senior Secondary 3 classes. In a bid to avoid any form of the onslaught, the state government Thursday ordered the closure of the school. Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Secondary Education Board (SSEB), Dr. Ekaette Ebong Okon announced the immediate closure of the school. The Nation gathered that trouble started when some students suspected to be cultists were recently suspended by the school authority. Also aggrieved are some senior secondary 2 students who could not meet up with the school requirements to be promoted into senior secondary 3. Investigations reveal that on several occasions these two sets of students are responsible for the mayhem in the school. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Odiko MacDon when contacted said the closure of the school over threats by suspected cultists has nothing to do with the police. He said in pidgin English ”Government close down school how that one come concerns me.”

At Least 64 Killed In Ethiopian Air Strike On Tigray Market

At least 64 people were killed and 180 injured in an Ethiopian air strike on a market in the war-torn Tigray region, a local health official told AFP Thursday. “The air strike was in the market area, so many, many people were injured,” said Mulu Atsbaha, an advisor to the Tigray regional administration on maternal and child health. The strike on Tuesday in Togoga town also left 180 injured, Mulu added. He said the toll had been gathered from residents of Togoga town, 30 kilometres (18 miles) north-west of the regional capital Mekele, and “confirmed with local leaders”. Ethiopia’s army spokesman said Thursday that the military carried out the attack on Togoga, but said rebel fighters were the target. “We do not accept that this operation targeted civilians,” Colonel Getnet Adane told AFP, insisting that those injured or killed were fighters “in civilian clothes”. But survivors and health workers described aerial explosions striking a busy market at the peak of trading, killing and injuring dozens, including children. The United Nations has called for an urgent investigation into the strike. The attack came as vote counting was underway following Monday’s national elections in Ethiopia. However, the conflict in Tigray meant no vote was held there, and the region has seen an upsurge in fighting in recent days. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed sent troops to Tigray in November to oust the dissident regional leadership, promising a swift victory. But nearly eight months later, fighting continues, which has triggered a humanitarian crisis with the UN warning 350,000 people are on the brink of famine.
