Man Killed Trying To Separate Fighting Couple In Imo

A pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), identified as Thompson Onyekuru, met his untimely death at the weekend while trying to separate a woman from the fierce grip of her husband. Our correspondent gathered that the couple, living in Umuokoto town in Umudibia Autonomous Community in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, was engaged in bitter arguments, which resulted in the man using a knife to stab his wife. The man, identified as Obum, who hailed from Obowo in Imo State, was suspected to be mentally unstable. He had locked his wife and her baby in their room where he stabbed her severely. According to an eyewitness, the incident started around 4 pm when Obum’s wife, Ogechi, and her one-year-old son were heard screaming for help. However, Onyekuru and others had waded in to prevent Obum from killing his wife. “As the crowd intensified effort to rescue the woman, Obum with a knife, threatened to kill anyone who tried to stop his action,” one of the eyewitnesses said. After successfully rescuing the woman from her husband’s grip, our correspondent gathered that Obum became enraged and started chasing everybody with the blood-stained knife. But as Onyekuru made to go, Obum used the knife to stab him at the back. A passing police patrol team was called to the scene, but he attacked the policemen who were attempting to arrest him. The police then shot him in the leg in order to subdue him. Both couple and Onyekuru were subsequently taken to the hospital where the three of them died. While the pastor died immediately after reaching the hospital, Obum and his wife died later. The President-General of Umuokoto Community Council (UCC), Hon. Charles Anozie, confirmed the incident. He said Obum and the pastor were taken to the hospital where they later died. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state command, CSP Mike Abatam, was not available for comments.

Bishop Oyedepo: I warned about this ‘evil’ govt in 2015

Founder of the Living Faith Church Worldwide aka Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, has recalled his warnings in 2015 about the current administration. Speaking on Sunday during a sermon at the church’s headquarters, Canaanland, Ota in Ogun State, Oyedepo described President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration as evil filled with wilderness. Oyedepo, who was speaking on the power of prophecy, said he warned Nigerians in 2015 prior to President Buhari’s victory, stressing that some fellows were angered by his prophecy but are now faced with the reality. According to him: “I am privileged to be among the few God shows things long before they happen. “Some fellows were upset with me when I was talking against this evil government. “I told this Nation, you are heading for trouble: 2015. Are they in trouble or in turbulence? Turbulence. “I saw the wickedness of the wicked being forced on the land. Now no direction, no motion. “When a Prophet speaks, he speaks the heart of God”.

IPOB: Nnamdi Kanu preaches unity, tolerance in DSS custody – Lawyer

Aloy Ejimakor, Counsel to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has revealed that the later now preaches unity and tolerance while in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS). Kanu was re-arrested on the 29th of June, expatriated to Nigeria to face trial for alleged treason. The IPOB leader was first arraigned on 23 November, 2015 in an Abuja Magistrate Court by DSS. Born in 1967, Kanu founded IPOB in 2014 with the aim of achieving a sovereign state called ‘Biafra’. However, on 28 April 2017, Kanu was released from prison on bail. Reports had it that Kanu allegedly jumped bail after a military action, code-named “Operation Python Dance”, allegedly targeted his family house in Abia state. Three years after, Mazi Kanu was re-arrested in an African country and was brought back to Nigeria to face charges leveled against him. Reacting on Sunday, Aloy Ejimakor via his twitter handle opined: “Today, I met with Onyendu at the DSS. We spent nearly 4 hours. My interaction with him was fulfilling. “He’s cheery & looks forward to overcoming this predicament sooner than later. Again, he stressed UNITY and tolerance on all sides. He has you all in his thoughts”. Recall that Kanu had been advocating for the freedom of Igbos and creation of a sovereign state of Biafra.

Bandits kill one, abduct seven in fresh Kaduna attack

Some bandits have reportedly attacked Ungwan Gajere, Brinin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State, killing one person and kidnapping seven villagers. Among those abducted by the bandits were women. Our correspondent gathered that the bandits also carted away livestock. A source said they made away with about 50 cows during the raid which lasted several hours on Saturday. A source told our correspondent on Sunday that the bandits came in their large numbers on motorcycles – each carrying three bandits. “They shot indiscriminately when they arrived around 2 pm yesterday,” he said, adding that “three women and four men were kidnapped by the bandits.” Details of the attack were still sketchy as of the time of the filing of this report. Efforts to reach the Kaduna Police Public Relations Officer, Mohammed Jalige, proved abortive.

Two killed’ as gunmen attack security camp in Niger

Two security operatives were reportedly killed, following an attack on Kundu community in Rafi LGA, Niger state. According to residents of the community, gunmen invaded the community on Saturday, but were repelled by a joint operation involving the military, police and local vigilantes. Some bandits were also said to have died in the attack. Confirming the incident on Sunday, Mary Noel-Berje, chief press secretary to the Niger governor, said “over 100 armed bandits” engaged the joint security operatives in a gun battle that lasted for over two hours. According to Noel-Berje, Abubakar Bello, Niger governor, commended the security operatives for their efforts. “Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State has commended the joint security operatives stationed in Kundu village, under Rafi Local Government Area of the State, for repelling an attack by armed bandits which claimed the lives of an unspecified number of bandits and two security personnel,” she said. “Governor Sani Bello gave the commendation when he visited the security camp at Kundu Community to commiserate with the security personnel and to cheer them up, promising to review the security situation in the area to make it better. “Mr. Governor said he is impressed with the response by the security agents and promised to support family members of the slain personnel, pointing out that the state has enjoyed relative peace in recent times.” While addressing the security operatives, Bello said his administration will work to restore peace in the communities. “No place is 100 percent safe, but we will do whatever it takes to bring back relative peace. We are investing in security equipment and other logistics to help in the fight and to reduce casualty,” he said. There have been several attacks by gunmen across communities — including schools — in Niger state in recent times, which have led to abductions and killings. Over 100 children, who were recently abducted from the Salihu Tanko Islamiyya School in Tegina area of Rafi LGA, are still in captivity. However, while the abductors have demanded ransom for the children, Abubakar Alhassan, headmaster of the school, said 15 of the teachers kidnapped have escaped from captivity.

Cultists Kill Ijaw Activist In Bayelsa

There is a rising panic in the Koluama community of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State following the killing of the Clan Chairman of the Movement for the Survival of the Ijaw Ethnic Nationality (MOSIEND) by gunmen suspected to be cultists on Sunday. The deceased MOSIEND Chairman in Koluama Clan, simply identified as ‘Comrade Big J’ also known as ‘Don Cici’, was shot at close range around 7 am on Sunday at the Osuale market on his way to pick up money from the local money transfer agent through boat transportation, Daily Trust learnt. According to youths in the area, Comrade Big J was a dedicated Ijaw youth advocate and also a strong member of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) until he left the council after the last National Executive election. A source in the Koluama community said though Comrade Big J is a known advocate of peace and welfare for Ijaw youths, those suspected to have killed him were cultists who felt he crossed into their territory. He said: “I suspect that all these small cult boys that do not know him and his struggle for their welfare must have shot him. “It may be a territorial killing without regard to the fact that he has staked his life for the struggle towards improved welfare for Ijaw youths.” Daily Trust gathered that the deceased was about 50 years of age and was married with kids. deceased was about 50 years of age and was married with kids. ‘Barbaric killing’ The Chairman of the Southern Ijaw Forum of MOSIEND, Comrade Mathew Ebikibuna, condemned the killing, describing it as barbaric. Also, the Publicity Secretary of MOSIEND, Comrade Emmanuel Tonye Isaac, expressed a deep sense of loss over the killing. He said: “It is with a deep sense of loss, we regret to announce the sudden demise of one of our fallen comrades in the person of Comrade Big J, the chairman of koluama clan who was gunned down by some unknown gunmen at the early hours of Sunday 18th of July in Yenagoa. “The Leadership of MOSIEND Central Zone highly condemn this gruesome act in its entirety. “We are appealing to all security agencies to leave no stone unturned by bringing those culpable to book. “As a law-abiding body, we seek not to take the laws into our hands but we are willing to cooperate with relevant security agencies to fish out these criminals. “We condole with the family, loved ones, Koluama clan and the entire MOSIEND Central Zone for this loss.” The police spokesman in Bayelsa State, SP Asinim Butswat, said the matter has not yet been reported to the police.

NDLEA Arrests Anambra Drug Kingpin Recovers 548,000 Tramadol Tablets

A major illicit drug kingpin in Anambra, Okeke Chijioke (44), has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA). Okeke’s arrest on Saturday 10th July 2021 followed credible intelligence and surveillance, which confirmed he stocked his warehouse at 3 Atunya street, Maryland estate, Nkwelle, Oyi Local Government Area of the State, with Tramadol branded as Tarkadol. After a search of his warehouse, 548,000 tablets of Tarkadol weighing 302.500 kilograms were recovered, with the suspect accepting ownership of the substances recovered. Authorities at the NDLEA say a preliminary investigation has established that Tarkadol is a brand of Tramadol that has just been introduced into the market to evade attention. “The substance has also tested positive to amphetamine. The drug was equally labeled 100mg pain reliever on its packs to avoid scrutiny, while laboratory tests confirmed it’s a 225mg drug. “It was further discovered that the drug was manufactured in India and smuggled into Nigeria without NAFDAC number or certification. During the search on the warehouse, a double-barrel pump gun with 3 live cartridges, which license expired in 2019, was also discovered and recovered,” an NDLEA communique on Sunday partly reads. In another related burst, the Benue State Command of the Agency on road patrol in Apir village on 14th July intercepted and seized 28,400 capsules of tramadol from one Dankawu Madaki, who hails from Misau LG, Bauchi state. The suspects are expected to be charged to court as soon as proper investigations have been completed. Commending the officers and men of the Anambra and Benue State Commands for sustaining the offensive action in the ongoing efforts to mop up illicit drugs from every community in all parts of Nigeria, Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) charged them to remain unrelenting in the discharge of their duties.

NAF refutes report of another jet crash

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Sunday denied report another of its Alpha jet crashed in Kaduna. Reports emerged on Sunday evening a jet that left the NAF Base in Yola, the Adamawa State Capital for an anti-banditry operation crashed in a village in Kaduna. It was also reported rescue parties have been dispatched to search for crew members, including the pilot. The Nation reports this alleged accident would be the fourth NAF jet to have crashed this year, including that which killed former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru and 10 other officers in Kaduna two months ago. On April 2, another Alpha jet crashed in Borno during an operation while there was the Minna-bound Beechcraft KingAir350i crash of March 21, that killed all seven people onboard. According to reports, there have been 11 military plane crashes in Nigerian since 2015 that killed no fewer than 33 officers. These include the NAF plane crash, which killed seven onboard on August 29, 2015; F-7NI jet crash on October 10, 2015 and Augusta Westland crash in Makurdi on November 15, 2015. But the NAF denied any of its jets crashed in Kaduna. NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information (DOPRI), Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet said the headquarters had not received any operational report of crash of its aircraft and that no alpha jet left Yola for Kaduna.

Bandits’ Leader, Turji, Releases Zamfara Villagers, Reunites With Father

A leader of bandits in Zamfara State, Turji, has released villagers and travellers abducted by his men over the weekend, in a rampage to draw attention to his father’s arrest by security forces. Daily Trust had, on Saturday, exclusively reported the mass abduction by Turji which occurred some two weeks after the arrest of his father in Kazaure, Jigawa State. The father was said to have relocated to Jigawa State after he failed to dissuade his son from his criminal ways. He was arrested following a tip-off by an informant from a rival gang who told security forces that the father was trading in cattle stolen by the son’s gang. In attacks on villagers such as Kware, Kurya, Badarawa, Keta and Maberaya, gunmen abducted many residents and rustled a number of cattle. Informed sources told Daily Trust that Turji also received his father from mediators on Sunday afternoon. A source told Daily Trust that Turji agreed to release the abductees as part of a wider mediation process initiated by the federal government as an alternative resolution strategy to tackle rural banditry. “He released the villagers unconditionally because of the pleas by mediators who are bringing key bandits to the table with the government,” a security source who is part of the new process, said. In an audio clip obtained by Daily Trust, on Sunday, Turji was heard promising to release all the people and animals taken by his men once his father was brought back to him. “Let them give you my father. Once you brought him to Bayan Ruwa, I assure you every one of the abductees and all the animals in my custody will be released,” he told the caller who is a prominent community leader in Shinkafi.

Five suspected kidnappers set ablaze by mob in Edo

Five suspected kidnappers were, on Sunday, set ablaze by angry youths along the Afuze-Uokha road in Owan west LGA of Edo state. The suspects were said to have attacked and abducted some travellers along the road and taken them inside a nearby forest. However, luck reportedly ran out of the kidnappers, as they were arrested by vigilantes who brought them out of the forest. According to NAN, the youths, on sighting the suspects, seized them from the vigilantes and burnt them to death. The suspected kidnappers were said to have taken the travellers into the bush, without knowing that the vigilantes, who had gotten wind of the incident, were on their trail. “The kidnappers would have been contacting the families of the abducted travellers to ask for ransom if not for the bravery of the vigilantes, while residents, who were fed up with the criminal activities of these kidnappers, set them on fire and left them to get burnt to death,” a source said. Bello Kontongs, spokesman of the Edo police command, who confirmed the incident, said investigation is ongoing. “After the kidnap, the vigilantes went in search of the criminals who they apprehended in the bush,” Kontongs said. “As they were coming out in Uokha community, on their way to the police station, angry youths in Uokha and adjoining towns took away the suspected kidnappers from the vigilantes. “All efforts to get the suspects to the police proved abortive as they were burnt to death.”
