Salihu Lukman: Buni working with ‘Yahoo Yahoo’ politicians to stop APC convention

Salihu Lukman, a former director-general of Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), says Mai Mala Buni, chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) caretaker committee, does not want the party’s convention to hold. The convention is billed for February 26. TheCable had reported that Buni may not relinquish control of the party anytime soon. In a statement issued on Monday, Lukman said with only a few days to the exercise, the convention’s sub-committees have not been put in place.   He said the Yobe governor is working with some governors and “Yahoo Yahoo politicians” to prevent the convention from holding as scheduled. “There is so much uncertainty created, just to ensure that the party is manipulated to meet the aspirations of these dishonest leaders. Sales of forms to aspiring candidates for party offices to be contested at the national convention was to commence on Monday, February 14, 2014,” the statement reads. “The speculation was that forms cannot be sold until zoning of offices is finalised. Following the departure of President Muhammadu Buhari to the EU-AU Summit in Brussels, the argument became that zoning will only be finalised after his return.   “Then it became that there was disagreement among governors on zoning. The latest is that some governors are opposed to some offices of the party coming to their zones because of their presidential or vice-presidential ambitions. “As things are, today being February 21, 2022, the National Convention is just five days away. Sub-committees to handle specific responsibilities of organising the Convention were expected to have been announced on Saturday, February 19, 2022. “No information has been provided by the CECPC. Now that President Buhari has returned from the EU-AU Summit, the old deceptive argument about Governors having meetings with President Buhari to decide on zoning and other matters related to the convention has started again. “It is clear that Mai Mala Buni is opposed to organising the APC National Convention on February 26, 2022 or any time soon. Consequently, he is working with other dishonest leaders, notably, Yahaya Bello, Hope Uzodinma, Dapo Abiodun and a few others. “It is a mutiny against the authority of the party and all its designated leaders, especially President Buhari, being carried by very dishonest people who can best be described as Yahoo Yahoo politicians.” In response, Mamman Mohammed, an aide of Buni, said: “Salihu cannot love APC more than the President, my principal and the progressive governors who are painstakingly working for the party.”

Gunmen kill Anambra businessman

Gunmen have shot dead the Chairman/CEO, Ofoma Associates Limited, Chief Gab Ofoma. It was gathered that the deceased, a native of Umunnealam, Umudim, Nnewi, was gunned down on Sunday after he visited his country home in Nnewi and was going back to his base in Port Harcourt. The incident took place around the Ukpor-Lilu-Orsumoghu-Azia-Mbosi Road, which connects Anambra and Imo State, as his driver made a detour from the Onitsha-Owerri Highway en route Port Harcourt, due to the traffic jam on the highway. An eyewitness said, “Chief Gab Ofoma, who had a chieftaincy of Ojemba Enwe Ilo Nnewi, was gunned down in cold blood on Sunday by those who kill for no reason. His crime probably was that he was riding in an SUV and looked like a ‘big man’. “Many people have been murdered on that road by these people who kill anybody that is in a big car and looks like a big man. It has become a crime to ride a big car in the South-East, except you have a battalion of security operatives guarding you. “During the Christmas/New Year mass return, the killings reduced but the killers seemed to have resumed afterwards.” The late businessman was a senior estate surveyor and valuer and had an estate surveying firm with offices in Port Harcourt (headquarters), Nnewi, Abuja and Lagos, employing over 150 people. It was gathered that he was a soft-spoken gentleman whose chieftaincy title Ojemba Enwe Ilo means “a traveller or sojourner does not create enemies.” When contacted, the state police spokesman, Ikenga Tochukwu, said he did not have the information but promised to get back to our correspondent. As of the time of filing this report, he has yet to get back.

ourt Dismisses NBA’s Suit Seeking To Reinstate Sacked Pregnant Police Officer

A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed the suit by the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) seeking to reinstate a female police officer who got pregnant while single. Justice Inyang Ekwo, on Monday, held that sections 126 and 127 on the Nigeria Police Regulation stipulates the code of conduct for female officers before enlistment into the service. The NBA had asked the court to void the provision for the disengagement of policewomen who get pregnant out of wedlock. It said some of the provisions of the Nigeria Police Regulations (NPR) conflict with section 37 of the Constitution and discriminate against unmarried female police officers. Section 126 provides for maternity leave for a married woman police officer who is pregnant, while Section 127 of the NPR provides for the sack of an unmarried woman police officer who gets pregnant. In January 2021, Omolola Olajide, a police officer in Ekiti State was sacked for getting pregnant while being single.

FG To Launch Sensitization Campaign Against Money Rituals

The Federal Government is set to launch a national sensitization campaign against the growing scourge of money rituals, which has already claimed many lives, especially those of women and girls, in the country. Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, announced this in Abuja on Monday when he paid a working visit to the corporate headquarters of the Media Trust Limited. “Gentlemen, our visit today is coming at a time of great concern across the country over the rising cases of ritual murders by unscrupulous people, most of them very young, who are seeking to get rich at all cost. We have therefore decided to use this opportunity to begin the process of raising national awareness on this scourge.   “For those who may still be in doubt, ritual killings have assumed a worrisome dimension in recent years. According to an NGO, Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND), 150 women and girls were killed for ritual purposes between January 2018 and December 2021,” he said, while also citing recent ritual killings in other parts of the country. Alhaji Mohammed said the National Orientation Agency (NOA) is already partnering with religious and traditional organizations as well as NGOs to forge behavioural change, especially among the youth, some of whom, he said, are afflicted by the get-rich-quick syndrome. He also announced that he has directed the National Film and Video Censors Board, the regulatory body for films and videos in the country, to take the issue of ritual killings into consideration while censoring and classifying films and videos, in addition to engaging with stakeholders in the industry to express the concerns of the government and Nigerians on the need for Nollywood producers to eschew money ritual content in their movies. The minister called on the media to lend its strong voice to the efforts to stamp out the growing menace of ritual killings. Alhaji Mohammed said the fact that some ritual killers said they learned the money-making tricks from some social media platforms has further given a fillip to the Federal Government’s campaign to rid social media of unwholesome content.

Ebonyi Assembly removes Deputy Speaker, declares his seat vacant

Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Monday, declared the seat of the embattled Deputy Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Odefa Obasi Odefa vacant, following his alleged resignation as a member of the House of Assembly. Other members who were said to have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to the All Progressive Congress, APC, during plenary were Mr Oliver Osi, representing Ivo State Constituency and Mrs Ngozi Ezilo representing Afikpo North East constituency as their letters were read on the floor of the House of Assembly. According to the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru, the duo also resigned their membership of the State House of Assembly. But in their successive reactions, the embattled Deputy Speaker who insisted that he remains the Deputy Speaker of the House described the action of the House as “Monkey Child’s Play.” “Why will I resign? It’s a monkey child’s place. It is only going to be by Recall. I have not participated in any Congress organized by APC. I didn’t resign.   “I do not belong to the APC. If you represent your people, it’s your people that will decide. No man is God. The House realized that they do not have 2/3 majority to effect my impeachment and that’s why they alleged that I resigned. That’s what happened. Why will I resign? Is it that am mentally deranged? “Did INEC give any other member a certificate of return? It’s now a legal issue. They plan to kill me. They are planning blood she’d. They cannot kill me because they didn’t create me. I chose to be in PDP “I have been threatened that I will be kidnapped and not be seen. Everything has to be by the law. Nobody’s life is worth any political position. They lack the power to forge a letter and read it on the floor of the House. I remained the Deputy Speaker of the Ebonyi Assembly. I have written to security agencies over the threat I received after the news of my press conference went viral.” Also, the affected lawmakers, Mr Oliver Osi and Ngozi Ezilo refuted the claim by the House, stressing that they never resigned both from PDP and from the House of Assembly. Osi said: “Are my daydreaming to resign? It’s not normal. They have denied me my entitlements. My official car and what is meant for my constituents have been denied me. If I am to ever resign from PDP, I have to read the letter by myself and the house will vote in that regard. This is desperation. This is a kind of madness.” During the plenary, Mr Kingsley Ikoro, representing Afikpo North West constituency was nominated and sworn in as the new Deputy Speaker of the House. Vanguard gathered that the constitution of the House has only 15 Lawmakers from the All Progressive Congress, APC, while 9 Lawmakers are PDP members. Meanwhile, some hoodlums suspected to be loyal to the Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly attacked and beat up the Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ebonyi State Council, Mr Nnamdi Akpa. Akpa who is the Ebonyi State Correspondent of Guardian Newspaper was kicked and punched on the back while the thugs had a field day. Reports have it that the victim was attacked simply because he was seen in the hallow chambers sending a message to a prominent politician (names withheld) in the State. Akpa is from the same town, Uburu and Local Government Area, Ohaozara, with the Governor of the State. According to Akpa: “I have to go the Hospital. I was beaten. I was brushed to the ground. What is my crime?” In an emotion-laden voice, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly who condemned the attack meted out on the NUJ Secretary, apologized to the victim and the entire NUJ family over the incident. “This is a public place. It’s wrong to beat up a Journalist. You are not working for me. I want to tender an unreserved apology over what happened or should I kneel down? I apologise for what happened. I am very sorry for what happened.” As political activities build up in the State, many Journalists and Stakeholders are expressing fear over their safety in the State.

Today, we are at DSS. They are telling us the same thing. We disagree!” During Kanu’s last court appearance on Wednesday, February 16, his lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, SAN, had informed the presiding judge, Justice Binta Nyako that DSS had also not allowed Kanu change of clothes despite to his earlier order. But DSS claimed that the clothes brought to him by the family had an insignia that should not be tolerated.
