NANS Gives FG One-Week Ultimatum To Resolve ASUU Strike

The National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) has issued a one-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to resolve its disagreement with the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) or face a national mass action by Nigerian students across the country. President of the student’s association, Sunday Adedayo, revealed this on Monday, in Sokoto shortly after signing the reviewed Constitution of the association at the Sokoto State Government House. “The Nigerian students have concluded and given the mandate that if the Federal Government and ASUU do not resolve this between today and Friday, Nigerian students should mobilise and give the language the government understands. “A day of national mass action has been fixed – February 28, which is next week Monday. Every Nigerian student that the ASUU strike has sent home should block all the Federal roads and the office of the Minister of Education and the office of the Minister of Labour should also be blocked. If Nigerian students are at home, office of the Minister of Education and Minister of Labour cannot be opened,” the NANS President said.   He described as unfortunate the attitude of the Federal Government who he accused of playing hide and seek with ASUU since 1999 when they signed the agreement with the academic union. He lamented that the government has bastardised the education system at the primary and secondary level and NANS is not going to open its eyes and watch the government destroy the tertiary education. NANS is in Sokoto for its constitutional review conference where the association reviewed its forty years Constitution at the Sokoto State University. The reviewed Constitution was signed at the Sokoto State Government House in the presence of Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal. Speaking earlier, Governor Tambuwal appealed to ASUU to find a way of resolving their disagreement without embarking on strike. Governor Tambuwal also called on the Federal Government to find a way of meeting the demands of ASUU despite the fact the country is facing economic challenges.

Anambra CP orders investigation into death of UNIZIK students

Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Echeng Echeng, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of two students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The decomposing bodies (male and female) of the victims were found in a room at their hostel after security agents, in collaboration with the parents of one of the victims, forcefully broke the door on Sunday. The probable cause of their death was hinged on generator fumes which was reportedly found on the corridor. However, Echeng in a statement on Monday, advised the general public on the dangers of carbon monoxide. He said, “It is a dangerous substance that is very toxic to health. This substance when inhaled can cause serious damage to the body and can lead to death. The substances mostly emanate from generators, water heaters, coal burning appliances or any gasoline powered engine. “The command has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the discovery of two lifeless bodies (male and female) on 20-02-2022, in a room at a student lodge in Awka. “Preliminary investigation reveals fumes from the generator was strongly perceived from the room when the door was forcefully opened by police officers that responded to the distress call. “Meanwhile the recovered bodies were deposited at the morgue and no mark of violence was found on the bodies.” The CP urged the general public, most especially the generator users to keep them away at safe distance from the window or any place the fumes can penetrate to avoid such poisonous fumes like Carbon monoxide affecting the ventilation of the house.

Father allegedly rapes 12 year-old daughter

A 12-year- old girl (names withheld) has accused her 45- year- old father of repeatedly raping her. The victim was said to have complained to one of the teachers at Saint Peter’s Primary School in Ondo West Local Government Area. It was the teacher who subsequently reported a case of child abuse at the Enu-Owa Police Division in Ondo town. The victim reportedly informed police detectives that her father started defiling her last year. It was learnt that the grandmother of the victim earlier took her from her father’s house when she suspected her son was sleeping with her. A source quoted the victim as saying: “My mother died when I was six years and since then I have been staying with my father. Some time ago, my grandmother came to pick me up from where my father and I were staying, to her house so that she can take care of me, but my father refused. “When she took me by force, some days later, my father came to my grandmother’s house to fight her with a cutlass so she could release me to him to stay in his house. “When my teacher noticed my way of doing things in school, she asked me what happened and I narrated my ordeal to her. So, the school authority called the police to arrest him.” The teacher who pleaded anonymity said, “When I noticed that she had not been active as she used to be in class, even among her friends since the beginning of the term, I taught she was missing her mother or she was scolded by her father. “But she continued to be lonely and left out. This made me invite her for interrogation and she told me what happened to her. She said her father used to sleep with her every night for a long time and has been threatening that she should not tell anyone if she does not want to die.” But her father denied the accusation shortly after he was arrested. He said both of them stayed in one room and always slept on the same bed.

BREAKING: Court Declines Abba Kyari’s Application For Release From NDLEA Custody

Justice Inyang Eden Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday refused to order the Federal Government to release the detained Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari from custody. Rather, the Judge ordered that the embattled Kyari should put the Federal Government on notice of the existence of the suit he instituted against it. The suspended DCP had dragged the Federal Government before the court challenging his continued detention by an agency of government. In the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/182/22, Kyari sought an order of the court to immediately release him and in the alternative, the suspended DCP, who is being held by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) over his alleged involvement in hard drug trafficking, asked the court to admit him to bail in liberal conditions. In an ex-parte application argued by his counsel, Cynthia Obianuju Ikena, Kyari claimed to be suffering from chronic diabetes threatening his life and therefore needs urgent medical attention. Justice Ekwo, in his brief ruling, declined to order his immediate release but ordered him to put the respondent on notice. The judge ordered him to go and serve all processes he filed on the Federal Government. Justice Ekwo held that all the averments and allegations made against the Federal Government are so weighty that the court must give the government opportunity to hear from it before taking any step. He thereafter fixed February 24 for the parties to appear before him.   [Daily Post]

Sources: APC May Shift Convention To March

The All Progressives Congress (APC) may shift its convention to March as a result of some pressing issues. The convention was scheduled for Saturday this week, but sources at the APC national secretariat confided in Daily Trust that there is a plan to shift it to March. This may be as a result of the crisis rocking the ruling party. Of late, APC has been affected by zoning and intra-party crisis in some state chapters. A new date for the convention would be announced as the party moves to constitute and inaugurate convention sub-committees this week. A credible source, who spoke with our correspondent, said, “It is possible because last Saturday we had by-elections and those who emerged are also statutory delegates, so extension is possible. “Now they are trying to constitute the convention sub-committees. They will put the committees in place this week. They have started working on that and by the end of this week they are likely to announce the sub-committees and people that will head the committees.”

No payment of gratuities in Rivers since 2014 – Pensioners

PENSIONERS in Rivers State have pleaded with Governor Nyesom Wike, to commence the payment of their gratuities and pension arrears gradually, lamenting that retirees have not been paid gratuities since 2014. The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NUP, in the state, Collins Nwonkwo, said: “No gratuities or accumulated arrears have been paid so far except for monthly pension. That one has been on, but all other benefits that we have been protesting for, like gratuities, arrears of pension, harmonisation and other issues have not received any response yet. “But we are aware that during the last budget presentation by the governor, we saw some of the provisions the governor made for pension matters. But they are just small money in terms of the realities on the ground. This has kept us restrained a bit. We are watching to see if things will improve, but if he keeps delaying, we will react. We are more interested in getting payment of gratuities and arrears started. His tenure is ending; he should start the payment and wherever he stops if he cannot clear it, becomes a starting point for the person coming after him. “For the pension arrears, the months are many. I cannot remember all now but the money involved is much. To be very specific on the total amount, it requires serious mathematics. The issue is that the state government owes us a lot of money in all the areas. They have not been paying like I said. We have those who retired since 2014, 2015, in fact, from 2014 till date, those who retired have not been paid. “They owe us many months of pension arrears that run into billions, so when you are making provisions for paltry sum to service the debt, it does not go anywhere. We believe that he should start paying something rather than nothing. All this while, they have been addressing this thing gradually and that has brought us to where we are now.” Speaking on the plight of the pensioners, the South-South Youths Initiative, SSYI, advised Governor Wike to pay proper attention to the welfare of the people of the state, including the retirees and pensioners. Its National President, Imeabe Saviour, in a statement in Port Harcourt, urged the governor to make deliberate effort to pay pensioners their arrears, saying: “The governor of the state should make deliberate effort to pay our retirees their gratuities and pay pension to our pensioners. We have witnessed repeated protests by these elders who served the state with all their strength and time. It is painful that we still see this class of people on the streets demanding for what belongs to them that should have been paid with ease. “We condemn in its entirety the idea of reckless spending of Rivers money on other states. This, the governor does in the form of donation to other state governments. Within two years, the governor has donated N1.5 billion to three states. N500,000,000, to Sokoto State, N500,000,000.00 to Benue State and just last week, the governor donated N500 million to Bayelsa State. “This is happening when our pensioners are protesting, the education system is not functioning well, and the primary healthcare system is going down the drain. We see this as a slap on the people that gave him all the support he needed.”
