NDLEA Intercepts Fake $4.7m Cash In Abuja

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted fake $4.7 million cash from Abuja. In a statement issued on Sunday, the NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi, said operatives of the agency had in the early hours of Friday, February 18 stopped a consignment sent from Lagos to Abuja at the Abaji area of the Federal Capital Territory. According to Babafemi, controlled delivery of the parcelled counterfeit notes totaling $4.7m led to the arrest of a principal suspect, 52-year-old Abdulmumini Maikasuwa. The seizure followed intelligence received by the FCT Command of the agency detailing the movement of the cash and the vehicle conveying it, after which the NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (retired) directed that both the cash and the suspect in custody be transferred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation. Meanwhile, a nursing mother, Mrs. Rashidat Adebayo, has again been arrested in Offa, Kwara State with assorted drugs such as Tramadol, Swinol, Diazepam, and Pentazocine injection ampules. This is coming barely three weeks after NDLEA operatives granted the 38-year-old mother administrative bail following her arrest for dealing in illicit drugs. Similarly, in Adamawa State, two drug dealers – Sani Isa (aka Bilaz) and Bala Yerima – were nabbed in Hong with 239 blocks of Cannabis Sativa weighing 209kg, just as operatives of the Bauchi state Command have intercepted a truck marked FFF 422 XB coming from Lagos to Maiduguri, at Azare, Bauchi. A total of 164.8kg of Cannabis Sativa concealed in peak milk cartons was recovered from the truck. Reacting to the arrest, Marwa hailed the officers and men of the FCT Command for their vigilance and preventing counterfeit $4.7 million from going into the streets. He equally admonished them and their counterparts in Adamawa, Kwara, Bauchi, and others across the country not to rest on their oars.

FG to Nigerians: We’re looking for solution to petrol scarcity — be patient with us

The federal government has asked Nigerians to exercise patience as it finds “lasting solutions” to the scarcity of premium motor spirit (PMS) in the country. Timipre Sylva, minister of state for petroleum resources, made the appeal on Sunday in a statement issued by Horatius Egua, his senior adviser on media and communications. The minister said the government is aware of the hardship faced by Nigerians as a result of the scarcity. “In the last weeks, Nigerians have grappled with fuel scarcity, not because of the absence of supply of products but due to inspection failure, which allowed adulterated products into the country,” he said. “This is regrettable, and the federal government sympathises with the citizenry over the unforeseen hardship, occasioned by the inevitable scarcity. “Let me once again appeal to Nigerians to be patient with the government in finding lasting solutions to the crisis. “This is unprecedented and showed that we on the government side are not afraid to take responsibility.” The minister said the Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (MDPRA) is monitoring fuel stations and working to ensure normalcy returns soon. “It is not a time to trade blames as is customary in Nigeria. It is, therefore, not a time to query anyone but a time to come together to salvage the plight of the average Nigerian,” he said. “After the storm settles, there will be time enough to investigate and get to the bottom, so that this does not repeat itself. “President Muhammadu Buhari’s charge to all parties and agencies concerned is to work together to ensure that normalcy returns quickly. “The Nigerian people deserve the best and the government is determined to set the country on the right path of petroleum products availability and sustainability.”

IPPIS unsuitable for varsity system, says JAMB registrar

and Matriculation Board, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, has said the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System as the payment platform for university employees is unsuitable for the Nigerian university system. The former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, who categorically stated that he was not a fan of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, said the union had a point to fight for regarding their pay. Oloyede said this during a virtual lecture titled ‘Synchronising cacophony: Interrogating some issues of concepts and perception in the Nigerian higher education topology,’ held in honour of a former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Professor Peter Okebukola, to mark his 71st birthday. He said, “I am not a fan of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, but they have a point here. IPPIS is unsuitable for the university system. “Let me cite an instance, when I was the VC at the University of Ilorin, I went to Australia on an official assignment and there I met a Nigerian with PhD in an area of Botany where we lacked the manpower. “I spoke with the man and convinced him of the need to work with us and he agreed. Immediately, I put a call to the Dean of the Faculty of Science and told him about the development and that was how we secured the services of the man. He is now a professor in one of the nation’s universities.” In the lecture, Oloyede also called for moderation in the setting up of universities by government agencies noting that there were institutions already created which could cater to the training of other agencies. He added that the government should instead focus on the adequate funding of the already existing universities in the country. “Also, we must be careful of the number of universities we are having, especially the ones being set up by government agencies and the military. “We already have the Nigerian Defence Academy which trains officers for all the arms of the military. We also have the Police Academy that trains police officers, it can also help in training para-military men too. “In that regard, we don’t need more than one or two. If care is not taken, we will soon have the ‘University of Road Safety’ or the ‘University of Civil Defence’. Adequately funding existing universities should be our focus,” Oloyede added.

Abia varsity female lecturer accused of sexual harassment

Students in the Public Health Department of the Abia State University have accused their Head of Department, Professor Ezinne Enwereji, of sexual harassment. Our correspondent gathered that the students petitioned the institution’s management, detailing their grievances against Mrs Enwereji and another lecturer, Lois Ndu Agumuo. The students alleged that the duo were in the habit of fondling students’ -both male and female- private parts in search of explicit materials during examinations. They also accused the HOD of deliberately conniving with Mrs Agumuo to fail them en masse in her course while failing to accord them adequate tutoring. A student from the department said she has been a victim of ill treatment from Mrs Enwereji. “Honestly, we are suffering in that department,” the student lamented. “Can you imagine our HOD wrote on someone’s script during an exam: ‘You will never graduate till you die’?” “She also touches our breasts and private parts, both males and females; she and one Mrs Lois Ndu Agumuo,” she added. The students said during one of their protests, a spokesperson for the university’s vice chancellor advised them to articulate their complaints in a letter. When reached the Dean of Students Affairs in the university, Professor Livy Nwokeocha, declined comments saying it was an internal issue that would be resolved amicably.

Three Relative Of Governor Ortom Killed By Suspected Fulani Herders

Three kinsmen of Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom, have been killed by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen. Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Nathaniel Ikyur, in a statement said the victims were killed on Saturday at about 5:00pm when the gunmen laid an ambush and blocked the Lordye-Gbajimba Road. The statement reads, “At about 5:00pm Saturday, February 19, 2022, suspected Fulani gunmen killed two males and a female while returning from a burial along Iordye-Gbajimba Road in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State. “The victims were riding on a motorcycle when they were ambushed and shot dead by the killer herdsmen. The two died on the spot from gunshot wounds while the other was brutally matcheted to death. “Soldiers attached to Operation Whirl Stroke recovered the bodies and deposited the corpses at Gbajimba General Hospital. “Sadly, this has been the plight of Benue indigenes in the hands of Fulani herdsmen who have invaded the state in a bid to take over our ancestral lands.” The latest incident comes a few days after five persons including a father and his son, were killed by suspected armed herdsmen in an attack on Tse Udeghe community, Mbakpa Council Ward and Ahumen community in Gwer West Local Government Area of the state.

South Africa assures safety of Nigerians after deadly attacks

The South African police have promised to ensure the safety of Nigerians residing in South Africa, following the latest round of mob attacks that have left a Nigerian dead. The police gave the assurance when the leadership of the Nigeria Union South Africa (NUSA), led by its President, Mr Collins Mgbo, met stakeholders at Kimberley district in Northern Cape, South Africa, where a Nigerian died, following a mob attack. Mgbo said in a statement from Pretoria on Sunday that the meeting was attended by Brig. Rikhostso, Head of Kimberley Police Cluster, representatives of religious organisations, the host community and the South African widow of late Mr Nicholas John. John’s widow was identified as Ms. Caroline Chikoma, who is currently nursing a four-month-old baby. Mgbo said that the purpose of the meeting was to appeal to the police to make sure that justice was served in the tragic assault on John and for his killers to be brought to book. “Secondly, the meeting was able to establish a structure or team, comprising the police, Nigerians, churches and other migrant community organisations. “The responsibility of this group is to make sure that information is sent across to the police whenever there is a crisis so that the police can handle the matter quickly before it gets out of control. “The police have promised the Nigerian community that they will make sure their lives and properties are protected,’’ Mgbo said. The NUSA president advised Nigerians in Kimberly to go about their business and to make sure that they stayed away from illegal activities. On Feb. 17, announced the death of Nicholas John, attacks on foreigners by South African gangsters. Mgbo had said in a statement identified John as an indigene of Ogun State in Southwestern Nigeria, who made his living selling cars in South Africa’s Kimberley district in the Northern. The unionist disclosed also that John’s South African wife put to bed three months ago. On the circumstances that led to John’s death on Feb. 12, the NUSA president said that on Feb. 11, John was attacked by a South African gang for allegedly buying a stolen laptop. Mgbo said that the Nigerian was beaten alongside his friend, who the attackers believed was an accomplice, while the South African criminal who stole the laptop and sold it to John was left unharmed. Other Nigerians at the scene called in an ambulance and took John to the intensive care unit of Kimberley Hospital, where they were informed by the medical doctor on duty that John’s brain was damaged and that he stood no chance of making it. South Africa appears to have turned into a graveyard for young Nigerians, residing in that country to make their living.

More trouble for Abba Kyari as NDLEA probes N3bn Tramadol seizure

More trouble appears to be looming for the suspended Commander of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), ACP Abba Kyari, as the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) launches into the probe of the seizure of a large consignment of Tramadol, an illegal drug, in Lagos. The alleged seizure, it was learnt, was not disclosed to the agency. The NDLEA, Sunday Vanguard understood at the weekend, commenced the probe as those close to Kyari in the police were believed to be worried that more alleged illegalities linked to the team led by the police officer may be uncovered. Kyari had been arrested last week after the NDLEA busted a drug ring operating the Brazil – Ethiopia – Nigeria route. The agency alleged that he was a member of the syndicate and went ahead to ask a court to extend his detention to facilitate investigation into the activities of his team. Sources close to the NDLEA told Sunday Vanguard at the weekend that the Abba Kyari team had been linked to the alleged seizure of a large consignment of Tramadol in a warehouse at Amuwo-Odofin area of Lagos. The consignment, according to the sources, was worth N3billion and it was imported into Nigeria by an individual who claimed to be a pharmacist. IRT it was learnt, allegedly got wind of the consignment and stormed the warehouse where the illegal drug was stocked, leading to the seizure. Multiple sources at the NDLEA said the agency ordinarily should have been told of the alleged seizure which was said to have taken place last year, saying the Abba Kyari team did not inform the agency of the development. “What this means is that the IRT may have sold the consignment of Tramadol to a cartel after storming the Amuwo Odofin warehouse and seizing the Tramadol”, one of the sources said. “We have launched a probe into the case with a view to getting to the root of the matter”. Efforts to get the NDLEA spokesmen, Mr Femi Babafemi, to comment on the story last night were unsuccessful. But a top official at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja told Sunday Vanguard that operatives were investigating the case.
