Terrorism: Venue Of Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial To Be Changed— CJ

The Federal High Court is presently tinkering with an idea of shifting the venue of the trial of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu so as to stop the interruption of other pending cases in court. The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho disclosed this yesterday during a courtesy visit on him by the newly elected executives of the Abuja chapter of Nigerian Bar Association(Unity Bar). Nigerians can now work and earn dollars DAILY from home. Regular individuals can earn as low as $300 daily Find out how it works. Justice Tsoho said the court was worried by the situation where lawyers and other litigants with pending cases in courts are prevented from accessing the court by security agencies because of Kanu’s trial and is coming up with some lasting solution to the issue. “It is a worrisome development to all of us the courts, counsel and parties,” Justice Tsoho stated. The Judge was however quick to explain that :”Its not really the making of the court. It is something foisted on us. It is security arrangement that causes this problem. Of course, that has been necessitated because of the altitude of those who also want to witness the trial. So, you find a situation where a trial is coming up involving an individual and a whole lot of communities leave their businesses to besieged the court. “It is worrisome, but you can’t prevent them. So how to manage it has been challenging to us. We are even trying to think of some solutions. If you observed, for those who were here yesterday(Wednesday), the matter came up, but of course, the roads were free because the matter was shifted to late afternoon. “So the security operatives were advised not to close the access roads to the court until the time proximate to the trial. We are improving along the line. We are actually solving the problem. “What will ultimately happen is that, we are exploring the possibility of shifting the venue of the trial. That will be the best way out, otherwise, if the trial continues here, it will interfere with our business. We have 11 courts here but it is only one court that is trying Kanu. “And anytime the case comes up, the other courts cannot function. It is really not a good development. But I can assure you that we have actually gone far in finding a solution to it.” Justice Tsoho disclosed. Meanwhile, the Chief judge has assured the leadership of the Unity bar of the willingness of the bench to work harmoniously with the bar. He further promised to address the issue of impromptu adjournment of cases by judges of the court without adequate information to lawyers in the matter. Justice Tsoho however said given the sudden changes in schedule of judges and other court officials, impromptu adjournments of cases cannot be avoided. Earlier, the Chairman of the Unity Bar, Moses Ebute (SAN) said the courtesy visit was to acquit the Chief Judge of certain development and activities of the unity Bar and to seek a cordial working relationship between the Bar and the bench. On his entourage were some Senior Advocates of Nigeria including Patrick Okolo (SAN), Paul Harris Ogbole (SAN), Audu Anuga (SAN), the Public Secretary, Ikem Onyenka and other executive members of the association. Ebute further conveyed the demand of the association to have a yearly judicial calendar that would pinpoint the courts vacation periods to avoid mistaken adjournment of cases. While lamenting on the inability of lawyers and litigants to access the court during Nnamdi Kanu’s trial, Ebute conveyed the suggestion of the association for trial to either be conducted on Saturday, via zoom or by 2pm “so that lawyers and litigants don’t suffer on account of one person’s trial.”       [TheSun]

They submitted a draft agreement which the ministry is looking at.” The union also described such comment as childish, not requiring any response. Speaking in a chat with Vanguard on Thursday, the National President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, expressed disbelief at the comment. “It is not everything one reacts to, but that type of comment does not deserve any response. “It is very unfortunate and childish. Out-of-school children national, not northern problem — FG

THE Federal Government yesterday said that the investigation it carried out in different parts of the country showed that the problem of out-of-school children is not just a northern problem but a national malaise. The Minister of Human Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajia Sadiya Umar Farouk, stated this during the weekly ministerial media briefing organized by the Presidential Communications Team, at the presidential villa, Abuja. The minister said that the country has over 10 million out-of-school children, who had been thought to be mainly in the North, adding that the malaise cuts across the six geopolitical zones of the country.   According to her, a recent survey carried out in Makoko, Lagos, Enugu and Jos, revealed that the situation is widespread as there are about 7,000 such children in Makoko alone. Asked if the school feeding programme of the federal government had impacted positively on the country by reducing the number of out-of-school children, she said the feeding programmes had led to increasing in school enrolment. The position of the Minister was confirmed by the Co-ordinator of the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP) Umar Bindir, who provided the figures, saying there was the need to make people understand that it is a national problem. He said: “Some people here if you talk about out-of-school children, they think you are talking about almajiri in the North. Some people think it is actually religious or a Muslim thing. But I can tell you in this programme, we have established it as a national issue. “We sent a team to Lagos. They went to Makoko, they met 7,000 out-of-school children picking things from the dirt. The guy came shaking. We sent another chap to Jos, he came shaking also. We sent another guy to Enugu, and for the first time, everybody realised that out-of-school children is a national problem.” The Minister described as the elitist assertion that the administration’s N5,000 monthly national conditional cash transfer is insufficient to lift Nigerians out of poverty, adding that the government discovered through direct contact with the beneficiaries that the money has helped the poor and vulnerable of society to escape from their dire situation even as some have been able to save from the amount. Fielding question on whether N5000 in the midst of the present economic realities in the country, can lift anyone out of poverty, she said, “If you look at the people that you are taking this intervention to, N5,000 means a lot to them because these are poor and vulnerable households and it changes their status, but for you and me, N5,000 is not even enough for us to buy recharge card, that’s the difference.” Speaking further on the exit programme for N-Power, which has become a source of controversy recently, the minister affirmed that government has a plan of putting about 300,000 applicants on a training programme while the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will provide them loans. She said: “On the N-Power, thank you for bringing that up and you asked another question if anybody really benefited from the N-programme. We have 500,000 that have been on the programme with Batch A and Batch B being on the programme for four years and two years. Batch A was on the programme for about four years and we were giving them N30,000 stipends monthly. And Batch B benefited for two years. “So yes, the N-power beneficiaries have benefited because these are people who were not employed who had nothing to do but were engaged and were being paid stipends to use to earn a decent living. “On the exit programme, yes, we have an exit strategy, which we partner with the Central Bank of Nigeria. And out of this 500,000, about 300,000 indicated interest to be put on an exit programme where you can be trained on different skills, skills of their choice, and they will be given loans by the Central Bank of Nigeria, for them to start their businesses.”

Four men have been arraigned before a Yola Chief Magistrate’s Court over the death of a 28-year-old man, Adamu Ahmadu, who was wrongly accused of stealing a phone. Ahmadu, who was the son of a security guard working with the Adamawa Broadcasting Corporation, Yola, was accused by Hamidu Umar, the son of the deposed ward head of Damare, Yola South Local Government Area, of stealing his mobile phone on January 22, 2022. Though the deceased denied the allegation, Umar reportedly insisted he produce the phone. It was learnt that the 55-year-old and three others resorted to torture to force out a confession from the victim. The other three defendants were identified as Sholle Manas, Faisal and Nahau. Umar, assisted by Faisal and Nahau, allegedly took the victim to an uncompleted building around 5.30pm and tortured him with wood and broken blocks. It was gathered that Bello died from the body injuries he suffered when the wife poured hot water on him, Saturday. The woman, whose six years relationship with Bello has produced two kids. It was also gathered that Bello had on Friday invited some relatives to help in talking to his wife, who he said was fond of starving him and an Arabic student living with them. The fleeing woman allegedly woke up Saturday morning, boiled water and bathed her husband with it. Usman Saliu, a brother to the deceased, said: “My brother has always been complaining about Ramota. US Challenges Russia To Step Back From Ukraine Attack

The United States said Thursday that Russia is on the verge of unleashing a massive military attack against Ukraine, dismissing Moscow’s claim to be pulling forces back, as artillery fire hit a Ukrainian kindergarten. In a dramatic, previously unscheduled speech to the United Nations in New York, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said intelligence showed Moscow could order an assault on its neighbor in the “coming days.” With US and other Western governments saying they see no evidence to support Russia’s claim to be withdrawing, Blinken challenged the Kremlin to “announce today with no qualification, equivocation or deflection that Russia will not invade Ukraine. State it clearly. State it plainly to the world.” “Demonstrate it by sending your troops, your tanks, your planes, back to their barracks and hangers, and sending your diplomats to the negotiating table,” he said. Russia denies any invasion plans but warned of “military-technical measures” if its far-reaching demands for a US and NATO pullback from eastern Europe aren’t satisfied. President Joe Biden, at the White House, accused Moscow of preparing a “false flag operation” as a pretext for an attack and said this could happen “in the next several days.” “They have not moved any of their troops out. They’ve moved more troops in,” Biden said. “Every indication we have is that they’re prepared to go into Ukraine.” He added, however, that diplomacy is not dead. “There is a path. There is a way through this,” he said. ‘Forced to respond’ Russia has massed enormous air, land and sea forces around Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin and officials say they do not plan to invade Ukraine and that the troops are only conducting practice exercises. However, Putin has made clear that the price for removing any threat would be Ukraine agreeing never to join NATO and for the Western alliance to pull back from a swath of eastern Europe, effectively splitting the continent into Cold War-style spheres of influence. Ukraine is far from being ready to join NATO but has set this as part of a broader goal to integrate with the democracies of western Europe, making a historic break from Russia’s orbit. The United States said Thursday that it had received Putin’s response to its offers of a diplomatic solution to the crisis, but did not give any reaction to the contents. The Russian foreign ministry indicated that there was little to discuss. “In the absence of will on the American side to negotiate firm and legally binding guarantees on our security from the United States and its allies, Russia will be forced to respond, including with military-technical measures,” the foreign ministry said. “We insist on the withdrawal of all US armed forces in Central Europe, Eastern Europe and the Baltics,” it added. Russia also expelled the number two US diplomat in Moscow, the US State Department said, condemning the “unprovoked” action. Artillery fire on kindergarten Russia took over Ukraine’s Crimea region and began backing heavily armed separatists in the eastern Donetsk and Lugansk regions in 2014, sparking a war that has already cost thousands of lives. Sporadic fighting remains common in the east and the Ukrainian army accused the pro-Russian separatists of 34 ceasefire breaches on Thursday, 28 of them using heavy weapons. The potentially most serious incident — an example of the kind of spark that many fear could ignite far more intense fighting — was the shelling of a kindergarten in the village of Stanytsia-Luganska. Children were inside but none were hit. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky tweeted that the attack “by pro-Russian forces is a big provocation.” Russian news agencies meanwhile quoted authorities in the separatist Lugansk region saying they blamed Kyiv after the situation on the frontline “escalated significantly.” US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin described Thursday’s reports as “troubling.” “We’ve said for some time that the Russians might do something like this in order to justify a military conflict. So we’ll be watching this very closely,” Austin told journalists after a meeting with NATO counterparts. Western capitals say they are also concerned by the Russian parliament’s request that Putin grant unilateral recognition of independence for the separatists in eastern Ukraine, probably ending chances of reuniting the country. “If this request were accepted, it would… demonstrate a Russian decision to choose a path of confrontation over dialogue,” British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said. Putin earlier this week claimed with no evidence that Ukraine is committing “genocide” in the eastern region. Disputed pull-out Moscow has made several announcements of troop withdrawals this week and on Thursday said that units of the southern and western military districts, including tank units, had begun returning to their bases from near Ukraine. Defense ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said some troops had returned to their garrisons in several areas far from the border, including Chechnya and Dagestan in the North Caucasus, and near Nizhny Novgorod, some 300 kilometers (185 miles) east of Moscow. The United States, NATO and Ukraine all said they had seen no evidence of a pullback, with Washington saying Russia had in fact moved 7,000 more troops near the border. According to US officials, there are now about 150,000 Russian troops arrayed in offensive groupings on the southern, eastern and northern borders of Ukraine. AFP
