No Comment On ASUU’s Stand Against My Professorship — Pantami

The Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Ali Pantami, Wednesday declined comment on the stand of the Academic Staff Union of Universities against his promotion as a professor of Cybersecurity by the Federal University of Technology, Owerri. ASUU had on Monday described the professorship awarded to Pantami as illegal. Asked by State House reporters to comment on the issue, Pantami repeatedly said: “No comment”, He said: “On your second question, no comment. No comment, and no comment. That’s my position. I’m here for official assignment, asks me about that responsibility. So, anything to deal with my ministry of communications and digital economy, I can be subjected to you and that’s why I come here. I couldn’t go anywhere.” “The institution you have quoted mentioned they are in court. As a government official, do you know what contempt of court is? You need to know. Because of this, I’m a law-abiding citizen. No comment, I hope you get it. There’s no comment.”

Fuel scarcity: Queues’ll end next week — FG

THE Federal Government, yesterday, raised hope that the lingering fuel crisis and its attendant queues at filling stations will ultimately disappear next week. Already, the government said that it has taken delivery of 2.1 billion litres for distribution nationwide to normalise the situation. The government disclosed this at a meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum investigating the circumstances surrounding the importation of adulterated fuel into the country. While briefing the committee, the government explained that the situation came about as a result of the discovery of methanol in the PMS cargoes shipped to Nigeria under the subsisting commercial contract. According to the government, the reason tests did not reveal methanol presence was because Nigeria’s specifications do not include methanol. Specifically, it stated: “There is no way we could have known about the methanol presence. The only way we could have known about it is if our suppliers, in good faith, made the disclosure to us. In this particular instance, the discovery was made by our inspection agents, who noticed the emulsification at the filling stations and brought it to our attention. Subsequent investigation revealed that the four cargoes which are all from the same source also contained methanol-blended PMS.” The government also stated that it then moved swiftly to trace all the affected products and quarantine the same, adding that it would cooperate with the Committee and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to get to the root of the matter.

Police confirm killing of PDP chieftain in A’ Ibom

The Police in Akwa Ibom have confirmed the killing of Chief Bassey Emah, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. “We received report that gunmen killed Emah,’’ SP Odiko Macdon, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Uyo. Emah was shot dead on Sunday. The police spokesman said that investigation into the killing had begun and gave the assurance that the perpetrators would be fished out to face justice. “Investigation is ongoing; in no distance time, I believe that the perpetrators will be brought to book,’’ Macdon said. Reacting, Sen. Bassey Akpan (Akwa Ibom North East) in a statement urged the security agencies to arrest the perpetrators. Akpan, who is the Chairman of Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources Upstream, described the killing of Emah as “one killing too many.’’ “Without leaning on any conspiracy theory, I hereby charge the security agencies to, as a matter of urgency, do all within their powers to unravel the circumstances surrounding the needless killing,’’ he said. The senator regretted that the killing of Emah would deprive his family of sustainable means of livelihood.(NAN)

PDP to Buhari: Quit as petroleum minister — and appoint a competent hand

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to quit his position as the minister of petroleum resources. The opposition party also demanded the “immediate sack” of Timipre Sylva, minister of state for petroleum resources. The PDP said Buhari has failed “woefully” in his duties as the minister of petroleum resources following the importation of off-spec petroleum into the country. Last week, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) confirmed that petrol, with methanol quantities above Nigeria’s specification, was discovered in the supply chain. The development led to long queues at filling stations as many shut down services. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Debo Ologunagba, PDP spokesperson, called on Buhari to quit as minister of petroleum resources and appoint a qualified professional to head the ministry in order to restore sanity to the system. “Nigerians were shocked when the news broke out over the weekend that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company is seeking an estimated N201 billion to clean up the adulterated fuel,” the statement reads. “It is clear that this is another ploy by officials of APC administration to continue to pilfer the national treasury to fund APC’s rigging plans ahead of the 2023 elections as well as to finance the wasteful lifestyles of its leaders at the detriment of other Nigerians. “Such move by the APC to further fleece the nation amounts to pushing the already exasperated citizens to the wall. The APC government would have nobody but itself to blame over the possible consequences of its continued impunity, insensitivity and disregard to the feelings of Nigerians. “It is instructive to note that the APC has remained unyielding since our Party demanded an investigation into allegations that APC leaders connived with some foreign interests to import very cheap heavily contaminated fuel-laden with methanol in their desperation to corruptly raise billions of naira to fund APC’s plots to rig the 2023 general elections. “Nigerians can recall that our Party, well-meaning Nigerians and organizations had exposed and challenged APC’s plot to siphon N2.557 trillion padded as fuel subsidy for 2022. Having been so exposed, the APC resorted to fleecing Nigerians through the importation of toxic fuel and now seeks to fritter N201 billion under the guise of cleaning up the adulterated fuel. “The failure by the APC administration to set up an Independent Commission of Enquiry on the “APC Toxic Fuel ImportGate”, especially to ascertain the individuals involved in the deal, who undertook the pre-inspection and how much was paid for very cheap contaminated fuel, is fast putting the nation on edge. “The only way to douse the tension is for the APC administration to heed to demands by Nigerians and expose APC leaders allegedly involved in the importation of the toxic fuel; get them to pay compensation particularly to those whose vehicles and equipment were damaged by the bad fuel as well as bear the cost of the said cleanup. ”The PDP, therefore, calls for the immediate sack of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva for misleading Nigerians and concealing critical information at the onset of this “APC Toxic Fuel ImportGate” saga, having refused and failed as a public official with duty to Nigerians when he said on national TV that he cannot name persons involved in the fraud. “The PDP also demands that having woefully failed, President Buhari should hands-off responsibilities as Minister of Petroleum Resources and allow competent professionals to man the ministry in order to restore sanity in the system.” The PDP added that the petroleum ministry as presently constituted is “peopled with persons with no relevant education, experience and expertise to manage this critical sector that accounts for over 90 percent of the revenue of the nation”.

Umoren’s Murder: Prime Suspect Claims He Was Tortured To Sign Confessional Statement

Uduak Akpan, the first accused person in the murder of Iniubong Umoren, a graduate of Philosophy from the University of Uyo, has told an Akwa Ibom State High Court presided over by Justice Bassey Nkanang that he was tortured to sign a statement given to him at the Department of State Services (DSS). At the resumed hearing on trial in Uyo, the state capital, the suspected murderer said he signed the statement to avoid more slaps and beatings from DSS officers. The trial judge, Justice Bassey Nkanang, had adjourned the case, for a mini-trial to be conducted, in order to determine the voluntariness of that statement. Counsel to Uduak Akpan, Barr. Sampson Adula, had, last week, objected to its admissibility on grounds that it was not made voluntarily. Speaking while being cross-examined during the mini-trial, Uduak Akpan, who is facing a two-count charge of rape and murder admitted that he was the person speaking in the video CD played in the court but stated that the DSS officers gave him the answers and the questions to rehearse before the video recording. He said, “They said I should practice those questions and answers and they also said when they start recording that I should give them the answers according to what I practiced”. The first accused had also disowned the statements that two police officers, the IPO and ASP, had testified that he made to them in the course of their investigation in the matter. However, when cross-examined in the trial-within-trial, the DSS investigator, Ama Okeke (PW10) told the court that the allegation that the first accused made the statement the prosecuting counsel sought to tender in evidence involuntarily was not correct. The prosecution witness testified that the DSS has a standard interrogation room with electronic gadgets, cameras, recorder, pen, tables, chairs, etc, where a suspect could relax to write or make his or her statement voluntarily. “And when the first accused person was in this room, he was asked if he knows why he was in the DSS? My Lord, he had voluntarily told my team that it is because he killed Iniubong Ephraim Umoren”, Okeke also testified. The witness further testified that it was not also correct that the video recording of the first accused which was played in the court was as a result of questions and answers as alleged by the first accused person, noting that his team only asked Uduak Akpan to narrate what happened that led to the death of Iniubong Umoren. The court admitted the video Compact Disc (Video CD) that was played in court in evidence, marked as exhibit two in trial-within-trial. Justice Bassey Nkanang adjourned the case till February 24, for ruling on the trial-within trial and also for the conclusion of the evidence of PW10.

2023: We won’t vote any presidential candidate above age 60 — Nigerian youths

Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, members of the Nigerian Youth Union, NYU, on Wednesday, advised Nigerians on the qualities to look out for before adopting or voting for any politician to become Nigeria’s next president. The youths also vowed to reject any presidential candidate who is above 60 years of age. NYU President, Mr Chinedu Obasi, who made this known during the first national non-elective convention of the organisation in Abuja, said that the people must search for the very best, without mundane considerations in picking the country’s next leader. According to him, such a leader must be below 60 years of age and should be prepared to show his antecedents in the area of youth inclusiveness. Speaking on the theme of the programme, ‘Towards Effective Youth Inclusion in Nigeria’s Governance’, Obasi said: “In exactly 12 months’ time, another opportunity will beckon for Nigerians to elect their leaders. The 2023 general election is therefore a golden opportunity for Nigerian youths to take a stand and reclaim the country. 2023 is our time to make it or mar our chances of engendering inclusive and purposeful governance. “As minimum criteria, we expect and declare that the next President of Nigeria must be below 60 years of age and should be prepared to show by his antecedents how far he has reflected or factored youths in his leadership vision and accomplishments. “Recent events have shown that same dimensions to the 2015 and 2019 are being propagated. Grandfathers are fighting for space with their grandsons because they believe Nigerians are suicidal in their choice of leadership. “Be it known that 2023 would witness the infusion of youth energy as demonstrated in the #EndSARS protest into active political participation of young people in the affairs of Nigeria. “We shall in the next few weeks begin an aggressive voter registration campaign such that same way Nigerian youths waved the national flag as its symbol of resistance and call for renewal during the #EndSARS protest, every of our member should arm him/herself with a Permanent Voter Card. “This march for Freedom From Political Oppression (FFPO) campaign would get down to all the 774 LGAs of the country. We shall task aspiring leaders on their blueprint for addressing insecurity, hunger, lack of educational and health facilities in the country. “We shall demand interface with aspiring leaders and subject them to debates and discussions aimed at bringing out the best and de-marketing the old,” he said. While bemoaning the present socio-economic state in the country, Obasi blamed the situation on alleged attempts to solve today’s problems with old strategies. He said: “A lot has been happening in our beloved country in recent times and you can all agree with me that Nigerians youths are the worst hit by the very unflattering socio-economic challenges in the country. “Having been systematically excluded from governance, Nigerian youths have put on their creative energies in music, entertainment, sports, information and communication technology in a bold attempt to take their destiny into their own hands. “Others have taken to crime, internet fraud, armed banditry, prostitution and various anti-social practices all in a bid to solve the pervading economic hardship that has become Nigeria’s national anthem. “There is no doubt that Nigerian youths are badly affected by this era of declining hope, but it should be noted that the lack of clear programmes to channel the creative energies of young people by the government has made life very chaotic, brutish and uninteresting in the country.”

Economic challenges: Nigerians must enthrone visionary leaders in 2023, says Peter Obi

Ahead of 2023 general elections, former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has said that for Nigeria to overcome her economic challenges, Nigerians must ensure the enthronement of visionary leaders in coming elections. Obi, who was running mate of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar during the 2019 presidential election, made this known in a series of tweets on Thursday. He noted that the call had become imperative following the mismanagement of borrowed funds which had become major contributors to the country’s economic woes. He tweeted, “Our past and continued mismanagement of borrowed funds and borrowing for consumption are the major contributors to the monumental economic challenges confronting Nigeria today. “Today, we are spending 90% of our revenue servicing debts because, ironically, our borrowed funds were mismanaged and have not been properly invested. “If the funds borrowed were invested in critical areas of development, education, health, and poverty alleviation, Nigeria would have developed far beyond what it is today. “There is nothing wrong with borrowing. But what we need to do is to put a law in place that if we must borrow, it must strictly be for investment in areas of growth. “Many countries have built robust economies with borrowed funds. We can do the same if only we enthrone visionary and committed leadership.”

Russia still sending more troops to Ukraine border – U.S

The U.S. Government has characterised Russia’s announcement that it had partially withdrawn troops to deescalate the Ukraine crisis as false. In the last several days, Russia had increased its presence along the Ukrainian border by as many as 7,000 troops “with some arriving as recently as today,’’ a high-ranking White House official said Wednesday evening. The U.S. now knew Russia’s announcement of a partial withdrawal was “false,’’ the official said in a briefing to journalists in Washington. Moscow had expressed openness to a diplomatic solution in recent days. “But every indication we have now is they mean only to publicly offer to talk and then claim about deescalation while privately mobilising for war,’’ the official said. There was also further information that Russia could “launch a false pretext at any moment to justify an invasion of Ukraine,” he said, citing a potential provocation in the eastern Ukrainian Donbas region as an example. There could also be more Russian false claims including baseless accusations that the U.S. and Ukraine were developing “biological or chemical weapons,’’ the official said. It is unclear what form the pretext could take “but we hope the world is ready,’’ he said. “No one should take these claims at face value,’’ he said. (dpa/NAN)
