FG orders MDAs to stop using Gmail, Yahoo Mail for official communication

Isa Pantami, minister of communications and digital economy, says the federal government has outlawed the use of generic internet domains for official purposes. Pantami said this on Wednesday while addressing journalists at the end of the weekly federal executive council (FEC) meeting presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo. The minister said the council approved the ‘National Policy on the Government, Second Level Domain’, which mandates the migration of all official communications from generic domains to the nation’s second-level domain under government top-level domain. He explained that all government agencies must switch to an official communication medium and stop using public email systems such as Gmail, Yahoo mail, Hotmail, and others. “This policy has been approved, and it focuses more on mandating federal public institutions, ministries, departments, agencies (MDAs) and all institutions as long as they are for government; they should migrate from using generic domains in their websites and their emails to our second level domain under government top-level domain,” Pantami said. “For example, you will discover today, some government institutions will engage in official communications using private email: yahoo.com hotmail.com gmail.com. “And it is an official communication and someone may retire or will complete his tenure or the tenure can be terminated, and he will go with the same email. And in that email, there are many official documents. “So, this will not be tolerated by the government anymore. Any official communications must be using an official email and that email should not be a generic one, it must be ‘.gov.ng.’ What is most important is ‘.ng’ that is our national identity.” “There are many categories of the second-level domain, some are for military, you will see like mil.ng mil is a short form of military.ng for Nigeria. You can see .gov.ng — Gov for government and ng for Nigeria. “So, there are categories of the second-level domain, while our country top-level domain.ng must be there in our websites so that whoever gets access will know that this website is from Nigeria, while for email, it must reflect the official name.”

Court Orders DSS To Return Nnamdi Kanu’s Glasses To Him

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed group, IPOB and his lawyer, Mike Ozekhome at the Federal High Court, Abuja on Wednesday, February 16, 2022. The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the DSS to return the glasses of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako, gave the order after the defence counsel, Mike Ozekhome, complained that Nnamdi Kanu’s glasses need to be returned to him, so he won’t go blind. Mr Kanu is accused of various offences, including treasonable felony and terrorism, offences he allegedly committed in the course of his separatist campaigns. The trial resumed around 1:00 pm on Wednesday and started with a complaint raised by Ozekhome that his client’s glasses was taken away from him since 2015. Ozekhome, who recently took over the defence team of the embattled IPOB leader, decried that his client’s eyeglass was confiscated in 2015, when he was initially arrested by DSS operatives, following his return to Nigeria from the United Kingdom. He also told the court that a new eyeglass that Kanu bought was also seized from him during his extraordinary rendition from Kenya. Also, Ozekhome lamented that despite an express order of the court, the DSS declined to allow the IPOB leader to have a change of clothing. He added that the security agency refused to allow Kanu to receive new clothes that were brought to him by his younger brother. The lead counsel also lamented that since Kanu was arrested and detained, his eyeglass was seized by the DSS and has not been returned to him. He asks that his glasses, be returned to him so he doesn’t go blind. Justice Nyako said the complaint has been noted and directed Ozekhome to proceed with the business of the day. After hearing from both counsel, the matter was then adjourned to April 8 to rule on Kanu’s applications to quash the charge. The court also asked the DSS to provide Kanu with his eyes glasses.

Protesting Lagos driver set ablaze by govt agents, say family, colleague

A family member and a colleague of a bus driver, identified as Ayobami, aka Ero, have denied that he set himself ablaze after his vehicle was impounded around 7 and 8 Bus Stop, Airport Road, Lagos State. The aggrieved family and colleague, who spoke to our correspondent during a visit to the area on Wednesday, alleged that some government agents set Ayobami ablaze. A colleague, who identified himself as Adeola, said he was conveying passengers to a destination when the incident happened, adding that he saw the state officials impounding vehicles at the bus stop. During the enforcement, Adeola explained that one of the area boys working with the task force dragged the steering with Ayobami, who refused to release his vehicle. In a desperate attempt to impound the vehicle, the eyewitness said the area boy reached for petrol, poured it on Ayobami and used a lighter to set the father of two ablaze. He said, “He did not set himself ablaze; how can somebody who is normal set himself ablaze? It was the area boys working with the task force that poured patrol on him and used a lighter to set him on fire. “It was done to make him get down from the bus. At first, they threatened him with the petrol, but he refused to get down, so they poured it on him and threatened to burn him, but he refused again. “It was when the area boys were switching on and off the lighter that the fuel attracted the fire and his body started burning. Even the area boy who was dragging with him at the front seat quickly jumped down and fled alongside the task force officers.” PUNCH Metro gathered that the victim, who sustained serious burns in the face, chest, stomach, back and arms, was rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja. A relative, who identified himself as Baba Roqeeb, confirmed Adeola’s account of the incident, adding that doctors were battling to save Ayobami’s life. He said, “Immediately he got burnt, his conductor, Rotimi, called me. But when I rushed to the scene of the incident, I was told that they already rushed him to Makinde Police Station. “I quickly rushed down there but was told they already left for the task force office at Bolade, Oshodi. When I got there, the policemen detained me in a cell when they knew I was there because of Ayobami. “I asked why they detained me, but they said they heard we were trying to burn the office like it happened during #EndSARS. They released me when they needed a family member to accompany him to a hospital.” Our correspondent saw Ayobami’s vehicle parked close to his house around Aji Camp, Ajao Estate. Black patches were seen on the roof of the driver’s side, indicating that the front seat was burnt. The Chairman of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (task force), CSP Shola Jejeloye, in a statement on Wednesday, distanced officials of the agency from the incident. Jejeloye said at the time of the incident, his men were still at their base, adding that some imposters were using the name of the agency to perpetrate crimes. He said, “Investigations and accounts of persons who were present at the scene of the incident have categorically revealed that the driver, one Mr Ayo aka Eru, poured petrol on himself to scare security operatives from enforcing the traffic law which he violated. After the operatives left, luck ran out on him and some of the hoodlums present mistook him for one of the security operatives and set him ablaze. “Let me emphasise here that for us as an agency of government, we believe that it is better for us to allow an offender to go unharmed than to cause an injury.” The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, said the state Commissioner of Police had ordered an investigation into the incident.

Release IPOB leader, listen to your people – Nollywood Actor, Yul Edochie

Nollywood Actor, Yul Edochie, has called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Edochie, in a tweet via his Twitter handle on Wednesday while seeking the release of Kanu, called for dialogue. He tweeted: “Release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and call for dialogue. “In a multi-tribal country like Nigeria, there’ll always be agitation from different quarters. “To keep the country united you should listen to your people, know why they’re agitating and resolve it peacefully. Not by the use of force.” Meanwhile, Nnamdi Kanu, at the hearing in court today, complained that he was going blind and pleaded with the Judge to rescue him. Kanu disclosed that the Department of State Services, DSS, took away his glasses since his arrest. He also asked the court to dismiss the charges against him on the grounds that the alleged offences were not committed in Nigeria. The Biafra leader claimed that no prima facie has been made against him by the federal government throughout the proof of evidence in support of the charges.

Fuel Scarcity: TUC Threatens Mass Action, Says FG Pushing Nigerians To The Wall

The Trade Union Congress (TUC), has said that the Federal Government is pushing Nigerians to the wall for allowing the problem of fuel scarcity to linger for days across the country. Daily Trust had reported that commuters and motorists are lamenting as the scarcity of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) popularly called petrol bites harder. Findings had also revealed that a litre is sold for as high as N600 at the parallel or ‘black’ market in Abuja instead of between N162 and N165. At a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja, the TUC disclosed that it has begun consultations at appropriate quarters but the union might be forced to take an “emergency decision”. President of TUC, Quadri Olaleye, specifically said that if the situation persists after its consultation, the union might be forced to lead a nationwide mass action. “At the moment, we are watching, we are monitoring and doing some engagements for us to be able to make emergency decisions. When labour makes an emergency decision, you know what it means? It is either strike or protest. “You can see that even what they are using to investigate the man-made problem is part of the funds made for the Nigerian workers. So, we are monitoring and when it is time to take a decision we will.” The union leader also told journalists that the TUC and its counterpart in Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) had commenced a process of organising and mobilising workers and like-minded political actors for political alternatives to the leadership problems in Nigeria.

Some NDLEA Officers In Enugu On International Drug Cartels’ Payroll, Says Police

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) says its investigation into the cocaine deal involving DCP Abba Kyari and four other police officers, revealed that some agents of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) stationed at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu are on the payroll of drug cartels. According to a statement by police spokesman, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, upon the demand for the arrest of Kyari and his cohorts, the Inspector General of Police ordered a high-level, discreet, and in-house investigation into the allegations. CSP Adejobi disclosed that the interim investigation’s report revealed that two (2) international drug couriers identified as Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Alphonsus, both males, were arrested at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu on the 19th of January, 2022 upon their arrival from Addis Ababa aboard an Ethiopian Airlines flight ET917. Adejobi further stated that the police investigation also established that the international narcotics cartel involved in the case has strong ties with some officers of the NDLEA at the Enugu Airport who are on their payroll. “The two arrested drug couriers confirmed that the modus is for the transnational drug barons to conspire with the NDLEA officers on duty and send them their pre-boarding photographs for identification, seamless clearance, and unhindered passage out of the airport with the narcotics being trafficked. “The two arrested drug couriers also confirmed that they have been enjoying this relationship with the NDLEA officers at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport since 2021 and had in this instant case of 19th January 2022, been identified and cleared by the NDLEA officers as customary, having received their pre-departure photographs and other details prior to their arrival in Enugu, and were on their way out with the narcotics when they were apprehended by the Police,” Adejobi disclosed. He said police investigations report also indicted DCP Abba Kyari, who had been on suspension for his alleged involvement in a different fraud case being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), for complicity in the allegation of official corruption, tampering with narcotics exhibit and sundry unprofessional conducts that negate the standard administrative and investigative protocols of the Force as well as extant criminal laws. The police spokesman however emphasized that DCP Abba Kyari’s involvement in these allegations occurred while his suspension from service was subsisting. While handing over the indicted cops, the Inspector General of Police also formally requested that the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency should ensure the identification, arrest, and investigation of the agency’s officers who have also been found to be colluding with the international drug cartel involved in this case. The IGP assured the public of his administration’s commitment to upholding the tenets and values of policing in line with the agenda of ethical regeneration, restoration of professional standard, enhancement of the anti-corruption drive, respect for the rule of law, and inter-agency collaboration in the drive to stabilise the internal security order of the country. Reacting to the police’ claim, NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi, argued on Wednesday that the agency has no reason to shield anyone who may be indicted in the course of the ongoing investigation of the 25kg cocaine deal. Mr Babafemi debunked claims suggesting that the drug mules involved in the case contacted its officers in Enugu. The agency’s image-maker asserted that on the contrary, the traffickers, who were apprehended at the airport, were in touch with the police team led by DCP Abba Kyari. He assured Nigerians that the NDLEA remains committed to the evidence-based investigation and its resolve cannot be weakened by any misrepresentation of facts. Babafemi on behalf of the NDLEA quoted from the transcript of Abba Kyari’s recorded conversation with an undercover officer and a portion of ASP James Bawa’s statement, another officer who was arrested in connection with the deal. The spokesman explained that ASP James Bawa in his statement to the police revealed that “he was called by an informant identified as IK from Brazil who told him that a drug courier will be arriving on board Ethiopian Airlines in Enugu”. Bawa in his confession further explained that “a pointer from IK, the Brazil-based informant met with him at about 1420hrs on 19th January 2022 outside the airport and showed him a picture of the courier. Subsequently, they sighted the suspect as he exited the airport terminal after all arrival clearance formalities, and he was arrested with another associate”. The NDLEA also disclosed that in his own recorded conversation with an undercover officer, Abba Kyari said, “they are greedy, seriously greedy (referring to his informants), we tried to have them accept 40% but they refused, except 50%; they know the rudiment of the deal very well; they are the ones that do the packing. From Brazil, one of the informants accompanied it to Ethiopia. “You understand; one of the informants accompanied the goods to Ethiopia, one of the informants that give us information. He is the boy of the big baron. “Addis, from Addis it will be given to those to proceed further with it, he will get their snapshots without their knowledge. “Yes, he will reveal those that are conveying it further, get snapshots of theirs without their knowledge and send them to us (Abba Kyari’s team). So, we already know the goods, picture and the clothes they are wearing, hope you understand, we know your name, he will give us everything. So, automatically my team will just be waiting, they will just see you and arrest you.” Responding to the NDLEA officer’s question on whether his boys are usually stationed inside or outside the airport, Abba Kyari said, “Yes, yes, some are outside while some are inside. They will just allow you to finish arrival formalities and arrest you the moment you come out.” In buttressing his argument, Mr Babafemi was of the opinion that the confession from Kyari and his colleague leaves no doubt and emphatically establishes who the cartel was relating with and their modus operandi.

Terrorism charge: Court to deliver ruling in Nnamdi Kanu’s case April 8

Justice Binta Nyako of a Federal High Court Abuja, has fixed April 8 for ruling on a preliminary objection filed by the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, challenging the validity of the 15 amended charges filed against him by the Federal Government. Justice Nyako fixed the date after counsel for Kanu, Mike Ozekhome (SAN) as well as prosecution counsel, Shuaibu Labaran, had adopted arguments for and against the defendant’s preliminary objection. In a short adumbration, Ozekhome pleaded with the court to acquit and dismiss all the charges filed against Kanu by the Federal Government. At a resumed trial on Wednesday, Ozekhome argued that the 15-count amended charge was “defective and baseless”. Specifically, he informed the court that his application seeks the “quashing, striking out and dismissing of the 15-count amended charge” against Kanu for being “incompetent and denying the court of jurisdiction” to entertain charge. The application, with 34 grounds, and supported by 36-paragraph affidavit, Ozekhome said, also seeks for an order acquitting and discharging Kanu for want of jurisdiction and defective, baseless and incompetent charges. Ozekhome adopted his application and asked court to quash, strike out and dismiss the entire charges. He asked the court to look at the entire grounds and affidavit, from paragraph 5 to 36, of notice of preliminary objection, etc.

FG: We are still negotiating before ASUU went on strike

Adamu Adamu, minister of education, says the one-month industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is “surprising”. He said it is not the federal government’s fault if there has been no agreement after several negotiations between both parties. The minister spoke on Wednesday while briefing state house correspondents after the federal executive council (FEC) meeting presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo. Adamu said ASUU’s decision to embark on strike came abruptly amidst ongoing negotiations. “ASUU, unfortunately, they have gone on strike and I am looking for them because all the issues are being addressed,” he said. “The last thing that happened was that our committee looked at their demands but there are renegotiations going on. They submitted a draft agreement which the ministry is looking at. “A committee is looking at it. Immediately it finishes, the government is meant to announce what it had accepted. Then suddenly, I heard them going on strike.” On allegations from ASUU about his absence from meetings, he said: “ASUU will never say that. I always call the meeting myself. The meetings I didn’t attend were those that happened when I was in hospital in Germany. “We want a peaceful resolution. The federal government is ready to meet them on all issues they have raised and if there are so many meetings and the gap is not closing, then I think it’s not the fault of the government. “There is a solution to this. The negotiations are the solution and that is why I have said that I am surprised that ASUU has gone on strike.” Speaking on the time frame for reaching an agreement, the minister added: “I can’t give you time. I am ready to reach an agreement with ASUU now but since I’m not the only one, I can’t give you time but certainly, we are going to reach an agreement very soon.”

We’ll normalize distribution of PMS, inject 2.1bn liters by month end – NNPC GMD

Group Managing Director, GMD of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation NNPC, Mr. Mele Kyari has said that distribution of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, otherwise called petrol will normalize in the weeks ahead. The GMD also said that before the end of the month, about 2.1 billion liters of the product would have been injected into the system. Kyari gave the assurance at a meeting with an Ad-hoc committee of the House of Representatives investigating the circumstances surrounding the importation of the adulterated fuel into the country. It will be recalled that the unhealthy development has caused untold scarcity of the product with Nigerians literally queuing and sleeping at petrol stations “2.1bn litters by the end of this month. We have enough supply. We will normalize distribution. “I am assuring more supply plan. We will contain this development”, he said. More to follow…
