2023: Elect Patriotic, Committed Leaders, Okorocha Tells Nigerians

Former Imo State Governor and Senator representing Imo West Senatorial District, Rochas Okorocha, has advised Nigerians to elect leaders that will be committed to the unity, oneness and progress of the country as the election year 2023 approaches. He said at this critical time in the life of the country, citizens should focus on the ability and track records of the leaders they will elect to occupy political offices in the country. Okorocha made the comments on Tuesday in Sokoto shortly after condoling with the people and government of the state over the demise of the Magajin Garin Sokoto. He described the deceased Magajin Garin Sokoto as a detribalised Nigerian that believed in the unity of the country during his lifetime. This comes weeks after he officially declared his intention to run for presidency, saying he will beat the record of President Muhammadu Buhari. “Buhari has done well, but he will never wish to be the best. I will beat Buhari’s record a billion times,” Okorcha said. He stated that the problems of Nigeria are bigger than the resources available and that the country needs a leader who can create wealth and turn things around. According to him, if given the chance, his administration will be better than President Buhari’s

Man to die by hanging for killing twin daughters in Cross River

A man, Ayanime Udo, has been sentenced to death by hanging by a High Court sitting in Akamkpa, Cross River for killing his twin daughters whom he accused of being witches. Justice Agnes Onyebueke who delivered judgement on the matter with suit number HK/6C/2018, said, “Udo’s act is satanic, demonic, and beyond human comprehension.” The judge ruled that the defendant had willfully and gruesomely murdered his 11-year-old twins, Mfoniso Anyanime and Emediong Anyanime, in 2017 after calling them witches. When cross-examined, the middle age defendant could not defend his allegation of witchcraft against the 11-year old female children he had allegedly given a malt drink mixed with acid from his motorcycle. It was gathered that one of the twins died on the spot on January 10, 2017, while the second was said to have crawled to the road where a kindhearted person picked and took her to the hospital where she died the following day. Child Rights Activist, James Ibor, of the Basic Rights Counsel Initiative which made the prosecution of the accused possible, said the incident was first reported in February 2017. Ibor said Udo was arrested by the police after an investigation. “The police ensured that necessary medical examinations and autopsy were done on the deceased children, which aided the judgement. This judgement is a great victory to the victims, Mfoniso Anyanime, Emediong Anyanime in particular, and the Government of Cross River,” he said.

2023: ‘We are on the same page’ — Ango Abdullahi meets with Obasanjo

Ango Abdullahi, chairman of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), says there is a need to strategise for the good of Nigeria, ahead of the 2023 elections. Abdullahi spoke after meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital, on Tuesday. According to Kehinde Akinyemi, media aide of the former president, Abdullahi was accompanied by Nastura Shariff, chairman of the board of trustees, Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), and Aminu Adam, CNG’s director of action and mobilisation. The NEF chairman was quoted as saying that in spite of their ages, they can still contribute to society and the country. “I don’t want to stay away from him for so many months or years without seeing him, especially at this period,” he said. “So, I’m visiting him to say hello and get a briefing from him on how I feel about the nation. We also briefed him on how we feel about the nation. We compare some notes and we agreed on some grounds.” Asked if the visiting group were on the same page with the host on issues discussed during the meeting, Abdullahi replied: “Yes. We are on the same page and Insha Allah it shall be well. “We have been having challenges and we have been talking on this. You are in the media and you know what we have been saying about the situation in the country. Things are not good enough and as we head for 2023, we hope to be strategising for the good of the nation.” The NEF chairman is among those who backed the clamour for the rehabilitation of repentant bandits. He also suggested that the federal government should offer amnesty to bandits, in the same manner as Niger Delta militants.

How priest bullied my family for donating cow when my dad was buried – Chimamanda

Award-winning author, Chimamanda Adichie, has revealed shocking events that unfolded at the church where her mother’s funeral thanksgiving Mass was held. Grace, her mother, died in March last year, about eight months after James, her father, also passed away. She was buried on May 1, 2021 while the funeral thanksgiving mass held the next day at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Njikoka LGA, Anambra state. In a recent interview with TVC, the celebrated writer revealed what transpired at the thanksgiving mass. According to the writer, the funeral mass had barely started when the priest called her out over comments she made about the Catholic church in an interview. Chimamanda said his remark left her and her family who were still grappling with the loss of their mother further devastated. “I have never been afraid of criticism. So, if this priest had written something to criticise me, or even shouted at me at some other venue but the Holy mass of my mother’s funeral, it would have been okay,” she said. “I really would not have minded. But to do this at my mother’s funeral… This man did not think that my mother deserved the respect, the basic courtesy of having a funeral that would not turn into a raucous market.” The author and feminist also recounted how the priest allegedly bullied her family when her father was about to be buried over money. “I wanted to say a lot more about the priest that day but I held back. I only told the church that I gave money. I did not tell them other things such as how the priest bullied my family when my father was buried over money. How when we presented a cow to the church, he was upset because he wanted us to monetise it,” she added.

I Won’t Be Surprised If Kyari Is Reabsorbed Into Nigerian Police – Adegboruwa

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, believes Nigerian police authorities are treating Abba Kyari’s case with levity, arguing that the suspended officer may soon be reabsorbed into the force. The handling of Kyari’s extradition request by the US, he said, points to the fact that the case might be swept under the carpet despite a fresh indictment linking the officer with an international drug cartel. “For the event that that happened on Monday through the NDLEA, I am just sure that one day we will just wake up and see that Mr Kyari would have been reabsorbed into the Nigerian Police Force,” the legal practitioner said on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday. “With all due respect, I think that was what Mr. IGP was working towards because if you look at the events, it would seem that the super cop was in the good books of those in power.” Mobilisation Capacity? Adegboruwa’s comment came two days after Kyari was declared wanted by the NDLEA for leading a drug cartel and later arrested. The fresh case with the anti-drug agency is the latest in the cases against the embattled officer. Late last year, Instagram celebrity, Ramon Abbas better known as Hushpuppi, had accused Kyari of being a beneficiary of an international $1.1million fraud case. He told a US court that the police officer benefited from the crime proceeds and claimed that Kyari also arrested one of his Nigerian accomplices when they had a disagreement. Kyari denied the claims and was subsequently suspended by the Nigerian police authorities after which an investigation was launched as the US also requested his extradition. Despite his suspension, multiple reports claim that the former Head of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) was still calling the shots in the security agency; a development Adegboruwa said further lays credence to the fact that Kyari has strong links in the police. “If you are suspended effectively from an organisation and someone else called to replace you [in Kyari’s case, Tunde Disu], how do you have the capacity to still mobilise serving officers of the same unit; mobilise them to go as far as Enugu while on suspension?” he asked during the breakfast show. He blamed systemic mistakes for such lapses, warning that the development could dampen the morale of serving police officers. “We need to be careful in order not to demoralise other officers who are still working in other agencies and are doing their best patriotically to nip crime in the bud,” Adegboruwa added.

No immigration record of Nnamdi Kanu’s departure from our country — Kenya govt

Mr Aloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has said that the Kenyan Government had filed a document in court to show that there was no immigration record of Kanu’s departure from Kenya after his arrival to the country on May 12, 2021. A release jointly issued by Ejimakor; and the IPOB Leader’s brother, Kanunta Kanu, argued that the position of the Kenyan Government had made the circumstances under which Kanu “disappeared” from Kenya a more grievous offence, claiming that serious consequences await all those involved in the action. In the latest Affidavit filed by the Kenyan government in defence of the suit filed by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in Kenya, it asserted that there was no immigration record of Kanu’s departure from Kenya after his last arrival on 12th May 2021. BREAKING: Kanu may go blind, his sight deteriorating, Ozekhome tells court The release made available to Vanguard read in part: “In the Affidavit “drawn up and filed” by the Attorney-General of Kenya and deposed to in Nairobi, Kenya on 10th February 2022, the Government of Kenya attached Kanu’s arrival and departure record from Kenya from 17th July 2019 to 12th May 2022 when he last entered Kenya. “Paragraph 12 of the Affidavit stated, “That it is evident from the schedule below that since 17/7/2019, the said Nwannekaenyi Nnamdi Kenny Okwu-Kanu has visited and departed Kenya on several occasions”. “Paragraph 13 of the Affidavit states “That from the above travel history, it is evident that his last arrival date was 12/5/2021 and there is no evidence exhibited to prove that he thereafter left the country”. “Paragraph 14 of the Affidavit stated, “That I am not privy to his (Kanu’s) arrest, detention or extradition”. Kanu’s lawyers argued that: “It is pertinent to note that this Affidavit, having been “drawn up and filed” by the Attorney-General of Kenya is the clearest official confirmation yet from the government of Kenya that what happened to Nnamdi Kanu in Kenya amounts to a crime, both in Nigeria, Kenya and under international law. “With this latest development, Kanu’s ordeal in Kenya has turned a new corner where domestic and international criminal indictments will lie against the persons that directly or indirectly participated in this high crime. It has gone beyond extraordinary rendition.”

ASUU: UNIBEN students protest

Scores of students of the University of Benin on Wednesday barricaded the ever-busy Benin-Ore-Sagamu road to protest the ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). ASUU declared a four-week warning strike on Monday, after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Lagos, to compel the Federal Government to implement the renegotiated 2009 agreement it had with the government. They were in their numbers by the entrance of the Ugbowo campus of the university chanting slogans and solidarity songs like “aluta continua…” and “education is our right,” among others. The students expressed their frustration over the incessant strike of university teachers, urged the federal government to heed to ASUU demands. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the protesting students carried placards with various inscriptions such as “5 years course has turned to 7 years; “FG settle ASUU” and “Enough is Enough.” Some of them turned the highway into a football field, playing in sets while the student’s leaders were sharing bottles of water, soft drink, pies and doughnuts to the demonstrators for refreshment. The students’ action caused a gridlock on the highway for about four hours, forcing many motorists to avoid the route while those going into the Edo capital had to divert their ways. Consequently, passengers were also stranded as many walked a long distance before getting vehicles to their destinations Leading the protest, the President of the Students Union Government (SUG) in the institution, Foster Amadin, said they had been frustrated by the perennial strikes by the academic union. “Since two days now, we have been to our classes and there have not been lecturers to teach us. So we have nothing to do. “We asked what was happening and they told us ASUU is on strike again; that they are on a one-month warning strike. “So we now felt that we should come to the street to say we are tired. “We hereby express our grievances to the federal government, to the state government and whoever cares to listen and. We say we are tired. “We want to graduate. For a programme that is supposed to run for four years, we are spending five years and even more. We don’t want it anymore. “Let the federal government see to the demands of ASUU and let ASUU also consider the federal government’s position. “All we want is to go back to our classes. I want to graduate, I want to leave the school. I am tired and that is our grievance,” he said. Amadin, however, appealed to all concerned to see to the reason why they were at the gate protesting.
