2023: Choice Of Presidential Candidate Will Determine Igbo’s Status In Nigeria – Ohanaeze

President-General of the Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Prof. George Obiozor, has said that the status of Ndigbo in Nigeria will be determined largely by where the 2023 president emerges from. “Wherever the country picks its president from in 2023 will send a strong message to Ndigbo,” Obiozor said in a statement he issued in Owerri on Monday. He said to avoid the potholes of the past and to secure the future and preserve national unity the Nigerian political elites must avoid the prevailing political myopia and contrived amnesia surrounding Nigerian political history over the imperative of North-South rotation. Obiozor said, “I understand clearly the dilemma faced by these leaders but Nigerian politics is at a point of no return where national destiny is at stake and where patriotism and political wisdom must supercede personal ambition.” The Ohanaeze Ndigbo President-General, therefore pleaded with the nation’s political class to drop all fears and prejudices against Ndigbo and forge a common front to move the nation forward. He noted that Ndigbo as an ethnic nationality is blessed with a large number of capable, Nigerian patriots and credible personalities who are eminently qualified to govern the country and meet the expectations of the citizenry through equity, justice and fairness. “Indeed he or she will bring into the office, an amazing sense of peace and harmony to the country, ensure imperative of national unity and commitment to good governance with dedication, decency and decorum.” He said that since 1960, Igbos have been campaigning for their rights to leadership in Nigeria, adding, “So anybody who says that we have not campaigned enough about the ‘2023 Igbo President’ is guilty of historical fallacy because many of us know how often those rights and opportunities have been denied or ignored with impunity. “How can one be accused of making noise over marginalization or discrimination in critical areas of Nigerian Politics and at the same time accused of not making enough political campaign for the 2023 Presidency,” he asked. Obiozor said Ndigbo have campaigned for any relevant National political office since the end of the war. Most Nigerians with conscience and patriotic as well as friends of Nigeria inside and outside the country know this to be the truth. He pleaded with all Nigerian political elites to set aside all fears, prejudices against Ndigbo and forge a common front to heal the nation. Ndigbo needs justice, equity and fairness and not blame game.

An eyewitness, said one of her cousins was killed during the shootings The source further said the gun battle between security operatives and the gunmen lasted for over one hour from around 6.30 to 7 pm on Sunday. She said: “It was like a war zone. In the process, about seven persons were killed, including about three Policemen.” Confirming the ugly incident, Anambra Police spokesman Ikenga Tochukwu said a number of the hoodlums met their waterloo during the exchange. Ikenga revealed that the command operatives repelled the attack on Aguata and Neni Police Divisional Headquarters, neutralized four of the armed hoodlums and recovered ammunition of different calibers, others. Some of the items recovered includes: 17pcs of 7.62mm live ammunition for Ak 47rifle, 107 pics of expended 7.62mm ammunition for Ak47 rifle, 7 pics of expended cartridges for pump action, 10 pics of expended 7.62mm long for Lar rifle, one big hammer, 3 phones and a wallet containing ID’s and some ATM cards. No Valentine celebration for Imo communities

A bleak Valentine celebration awaits Imo state as more than 18 council areas of the state may be on lockdown, as residents are forced to sit-at-home every Monday in some areas of the state. This is occasioned by the Monday sit-at-home directive initiated by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) which the separatist group has since disowned but have been unable stop its enforcement by armed hoodlums. Orlu is the second largest city in Imo state followed by Okigwe. Both Orlu and Okigwe will again be locked down on Monday, February 14, with all public places and public activities grounded for the day. Findings by our correspondent indicate that it will not just be Orlu town and Okigwe town that will be shut down, but the entire 12 local governments in Imo West (Orlu zone) and the 6 local governments in Imo North (Okigwe zone) will be turned to a ghost town on Valentine’s Day. Ordinarily, following the level of violence that has attended the sit-at-home exercises, commercial vehicles do not ply the Orlu route on Mondays same for Okigwe. Valentine’s Day perceived largely as a day for lovers and good friends to hang out, have a good time and catch up on their relationships, is often a major boost for economic activities as eateries, cinemas, hotels and other entertainment and relaxation spots are crowded with fun-seekers who are marking the Lovers’ Day, as Valentine’s Day is often called. But for these affected areas, there will be no Valentine, as the streets and roads will be deserted, public places closed and social events foregone, to avoid any violent fallout that may result if the controversial sit-at-home is flouted. It is however hoped that this sad scenario may further cause the perpetrators and backers of the promoters of the sit-at-home to have a rethink and reevaluate the merits and demerits of the now discredited directive.

The survivor has undergone a medical examination, which confirms penetration,” she said. “The suspect has confessed to the crime and pleaded for leniency, attributing his action to the devil’s influence,” she added

No going back on my preferred successor – Emmanuel

Akwa Ibom Governor Udom Emmanuel has said his choice of Pastor Umo Eno as his preferred successor has not created any division within the People’s Democratic Party(PDP) in the State. Emmanuel said this at the weekend during the 10th Series of “ThegovernorSpeaks” programme aired live on state-owned and private radio stations operating in the state, monitored by the Nation in Uyo. The Governor rechoed his admonition against those who desire power by violence, adding he would not be distracted. His words: “As a leader I am entitled to only one vote during the party primaries and the general elections. And that my vote is not for violence, it is not for the man that will go and carry gun and point on your head to grab power. “Whoever grabs power by violence will rule by violence. So I am telling you that my vote is for peace, it is for progress, it is for economic prosperity, for infrastructural development, unity and I can keep counting. “So our party the PDP is not divided anything. Those social media things we read is not helping us in any matter. I don’t follow those things, I must get focused; I don’t need those distractions” On his promise to complete all ongoing projects before handing over, the Governor assured that his administration was doing everything humanly possible to achieve that. He thanked God the administration has been able to complete some of the capital projects it started despite the recession and the negative effect of COVID-19 on the global economy. He explained that the execution of those projects across the State even created job opportunities for youths at the sites. According to him: “These are things that stimulates the economy anywhere in the world. Anytime a country is in recession and you want to come out of the recession, spend more money on infrastructural development, spend more on capital expenditure. “People hear about COVID-19 but they don’t know the negative impact on the economy around the world. Thank God we have just completed our Smart building.”

2023: Tinubu healthy, photoshop of wet dress mere distraction, says support group

A pro-Bola Tinubu coalition, the Support Groups Management Council, says the viral photograph of the All Progressives Congress leader pictured in a wet dress is the work of mischief-makers. In a statement on Sunday, the coalition said the viral photo was manipulated, noting that Tinubu is healthy and physically fit to be Nigeria’s President in 2023, contrary to claims by propagandists. Tinubu had on Saturday visited some top traditional rulers in Ogun State including the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, to seek royal blessing on his presidential ambition. Photo of Tinubu wet around his lower region had surfaced online with many saying the APC leader is suffering from a urinary condition. But in its statement signed by its Director of Media and Publicity, Biodun Ajiboye, the pro-Tinubu group described the claim as false. The statement was titled, ‘Evildoers, destroyers of destiny are at it again’. It partly read, “The success Asiwaju Tinubu recorded at these high-level visitations to top traditional rulers had again led enemies of progress, the brewers of hate, discord and disharmony to script a dirty tale to discredit this awesome outing. This time it is that he wetted his dress! “Assuming without conceding that is the case, so is it the back of his knees that would be wet and not the bum area? So if he wetted his babariga, he would not cover it and would still move to be flat to greet the Awujale of Ijebuland in the full glare of everyone present? It was the usual photoshop manipulations and shallow mental agility that pushed them to dispense a feeble narrative that made no iota of sense. “Yet as their video showed, it was after their wetting incident that he went ahead and prostrated to Kabiyesi. —Tinubu “This is another distraction, no amount of distractions or attempts to discredit Asiwaju will work to remove the wall from his political wind. “Asiwaju Tinubu has declared his interest in the presidential race. He has his legs on the throttle. There is no going back. “We appeal to Nigerian to ignore the evil-minded machinations and assure Nigerians that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is healthy and strong enough to undertake the responsibilities involved in the expected rigours of campaigns and politicking when the time comes.” Tinubu had stayed in the United Kingdom for over three months in 2021 when he underwent surgery and therapy for knee injury. He, however, returned to the country in October of the same year and travelled to some parts of the country to meet political juggernauts and stakeholders ahead of next election. The health condition of the 69-year-old APC leader has constantly become a subject of controversy but many of his staunch supporters have argued that Tinubu is fit to become Nigeria’s President, adding that he is not older than the current President of the United States, Joe Biden, 79; and his predecessor, Donald Trump, 75.

Ukraine Vows To Keep Airspace Open Despite Russia Threat

Ukraine on Sunday vowed to keep its airspace open to international travel despite Western warnings that Russian troops conducting drills near its borders could invade at any point. The Dutch carrier KLM on Saturday became the first major airline to indefinitely suspend flights to the former Soviet republic because of the rising risks. Ukraine’s budget airline SkyUp said on Sunday that its flight from Portugal to Kyiv was forced to land in Moldova because the plane’s Irish leasing company had revoked permission for it to cross into Ukraine. SkyUP added that European leasing companies were demanding that Ukrainian airlines return their planes to EU airspace within 48 hours. Ukraine’s infrastructure ministry responded by holding an emergency meeting aimed at maintaining foreign travel and keeping the country from becoming more isolated in the heat of the crisis. “The airspace over Ukraine remains open and the state is working on preempting risks for airlines,” the ministry said after the meeting. Industry analysts believe other international airlines may soon also ban flights into Ukraine because of the growing cost to travel insurers. The travel industry is still haunted by the memory of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 being shot down while flying near eastern Ukraine’s conflict zone in July 2014. All 298 passengers aboard the Amsterdam-Kuala Lumpur flight died. Ukraine’s infrastructure ministry acknowledged that “some carriers are facing difficulties linked to fluctuations on the insurance market”. “For its part, the state is prepared to support airlines and provide them with additional financial guarantees in order to support the market,” it said. – Foreigners fleeing – The worries about air travel come with a growing number of Western governments winding down their diplomatic missions in Kyiv and advising citizens to get out of Ukraine as soon as they can. The US State Department on Saturday ordered all non-emergency embassy staff out of Ukraine. Russia cited fears of “possible provocations from the Kyiv regime” as it also began pulling out some embassy staff. The drawdown has touched the staff of the Organization for Security and Co-operation (OSCE) monitoring mission in Ukraine. The OSCE has served as the world’s eyes and ears for the eight-year conflict across Ukraine’s Russian-backed separatist east that has claimed more than 14,000 lives. But images on social media showed convoys of its white SUVs leaving various parts of the conflict zone because of the staff’s need to comply with their respective governments’ travel advisories. Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Sunday that the mission’s partial withdrawal caused “serious concern” in Moscow because the move further ramped up tensions. The Ukrainian government has been trying to preempt the flood of foreigners leaving the country by calling for calm and criticising US warnings of war breaking out “any day”. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday that “all this information is only provoking panic and not helping us”. Zelensky’s office stressed on Sunday that “the sky over Ukraine remains open”. “The European Union Aviation Safety Agency also has not issued any recommendations to limit flights over Ukrainian airspace,” Zelensky’s deputy chief of staff Kyrylo Tymoshenko wrote on Facebook. “Ukraine is ready to support airlines,” he added. “The government will adopt the required measures soon”.

Four Missing Afghan Women Activists Released, Says UN

Four women activists in Afghanistan have been released by the country’s “de facto authorities” after going missing weeks ago, the United Nations said Sunday. “After a long period of uncertainty about their whereabouts and safety, the four ‘disappeared’ Afghan women activists, as well as their relatives who also went missing, have all been released by the de facto authorities,” the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said on Twitter. Tamana Zaryabi Paryani, Parwana Ibrahimkhel, Zahra Mohammadi and Mursal Ayar went missing after participating in an anti-Taliban rally, but Afghanistan’s hardline Islamist rulers had consistently denied detaining them. AFP reported the release of Ibrahimkhel late on Friday. She went missing along with Paryani on January 19, days after taking part in a rally in Kabul calling for women’s right to work and education. Weeks later, Mohammadi and Ayar went missing. The Taliban, whose government is still not recognised by any country, have promised a softer version of the harsh rule that characterised their first stint in power from 1996 to 2001. But since storming back to power in August, they have cracked down on dissent by forcefully dispersing women’s rallies, detaining critics and often beating local journalists covering unsanctioned protests.
