2023: Sen. Orji Kalu’s our presidential candidate, North declares

The northern region of Nigeria has declared the Senate Chief Whip, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu as its presidential candidate for 2023 general elections. By the declaration, the region has asked others Nigerians who have either indicated interest or jostling for the plum office in the All Progressives Congress, APC, to shelf their ambitions. The Director-General, Arewa Summit International, Dr. Bashir Lamido gave the advice while speaking in Yola, Adamawa State over the weekend. Lamido, a chieftain of the APC also enjoined all other aspirants in the southern Nigerian and indeed, all parties to support Kalu. In a statement made available to Vanguard in Abuja, he said that Kalu who is a former governor of Abia from 1999 to 2007 was a detribalised Nigerian, submitting that he will serve the interest of all Nigerians as the President of the country in 2023. “The North won’t support a regional candidate like Tinubu, Osinbajo, Umahi or Amaechi. It is about trust and who can truly defend Nigeria. “In 2023, we won’t support any regional candidate; Kalu has what it takes to lead Nigeria. He knows Nigeria too well having been in close and brotherly relationship with the North in the past 38 years. We won’t support someone that would emerge and destabilize Nigeria. “It is important they step down now and adopt Orji Kalu because the North won’t support them. Politics is a game of interest, and Orji Uzor Kalu is the interest of the North and millions of other Nigerians,” Lamido said.

Why Nigeria cannot breathe – Yahaya Bello

Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello on Saturday attributed the breathless situation in the country to the tendency for old politicians to hold on to power without giving the youth a chance to breath. Addressing a gathering of youths from the North East states at the launching of his Rescue Nigeria Mission, RENMISS campaign in Gombe, Yahaya said if the youths continue to allow the old politicians continue to pilot the ship of the nation, the nation may cease to breathe completely. Yahaya, who spoke through is Chief of Staff, Abdulkareem Asuku, said what his Rescue Nigeria Mission is calling for is not just youth inclusion in government but total take-over of the driver’s seat because they are the ones who have the leadership capacity, technical know-how, ability and the number needed to change the situation of the country. “When I said Nigeria cannot breathe, I am trying to address the myriads of problems confronting the country today. First is insecurity, under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, the nation has achieved a lot but it is not yet Uhuru. We need somebody who will not just stay in Abuja and allow things to happen without going to supervise it and that is where the agility and ability of the youths of this country is needed. “We need to secure our nation. No nation can succeed without security. The unity of this country is at stake today; Muslims no longer trust Christians, the North no longer trusts the South. You can hear people saying Fulani should leave my enclave, Ibo should leave the North. This is not what the founding fathers of this country envisaged,” he said. According to him, Nigeria cannot breathe today because of disunity. He explained further that what RENMISS is doing is awareness creation to call on the youths to use their voter’s card to enter into governance business and not through revolution. “We have a leader in Kogi State, in person of Governor Yahaya Bello who has been able to unite the people of Kogi State and even appoint people that are not from the state to be part of his Government system. He is the first Muslim in government that decided to build a chapel in the Government House for Christians to worship. That is called religious tolerance,” he said. Participants at the official launching of RENMISS in Gombe were drawn from the six North East states of Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, Yobe, Taraba and Borno.

“The least consideration, for now, is a warning strike”, says ASUU member

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities will finalise decision on an impending strike at the end of an ongoing meeting at the University of Lagos. A chairman of one of the branches, who preferred anonymity because he’s not in a position to speak, said the least consideration so far is a warning strike. He explained that “ASUU is being considerate but the actions of the Federal Government are not helpful”. “The least consideration, for now, is a warning strike. Some of our branch representatives feel we should commence strike outrightly but others advised that apart from the lecture free-day declared, we should embark on another warning strike before the full, indefinite strike.” Asked what will be the next step after the warning strike, he replied, “The NEC will determine. But it is either we hold another branch congresses or we embark on the full strike if the government is not forthcoming. The resolution of the ongoing meeting will determine.” The PUNCH had reported that members of the National Executive Committee of ASUU are meeting at UNILAG to finalise the union’s decision on an impending strike. ASUU is expected to make the final decision on the strike by voting, but The PUNCH gathered that no voting has been held yet. When contacted on the telephone, the Chairperson of UNILAG ASUU, Dele Ashiru, said, “NEC meeting still ongoing.” The union had expressed grievances over the failure of the Federal Government to fulfill some of the agreements it made as far back as 2009. ASUU had on November 15, 2021 given the federal government a three-week ultimatum over the failure to meet the demands.

SERAP sues Buhari, Lai Mohammed over ‘failure to publish copy of agreement with Twitter

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against President Muhammadu Buhari over “the failure to publish copy of the agreement the Federal Government recently signed with Twitter, Inc, and the failure to publish the details of the terms and conditions of any such agreement.” Joined in the suit as Respondent is Alhaji Lai Mohammed, minister of information and culture. The Federal Government had in January lifted the suspension of Twitter operation in Nigeria, stating that, “Twitter has agreed to act with a respectful acknowledgement of Nigerian laws and the national culture and history.” But in the suit number FHC/L/CS/238/2022 filed last Friday at the Federal High Court, Lagos, SERAP is asking the court to “direct and compel President Buhari and Alhaji Lai Mohammed to release and widely publish copy of the agreement with Twitter, and the terms and conditions of any such agreement.” In the suit, SERAP is arguing that: “It is in the interest of justice to grant this application. Publishing the agreement would enable Nigerians to scrutinise it, seek legal remedies as appropriate, and ensure that the conditions for lifting the suspension of Twitter are not used as pretexts to suppress legitimate discourse.” READ ALSO: SERAP to Buhari: Rescind NIN-SIM access to subscribers’ details approval SERAP is also arguing that, “Publishing the agreement with Twitter would promote transparency, accountability, and help to mitigate threats to Nigerians’ rights online, as well as any interference with online privacy and freedom of expression.” According to SERAP, “Any agreement with social media companies must meet the constitutional requirements of legality, necessity, proportionality and legitimacy. Secretly agreed terms and conditions will fail these fundamental requirements.” SERAP is also seeking “an order of mandamus to direct and compel President Buhari and Alhaji Lai Mohammed to clarify the manner and scope in which the agreement with Twitter will be enforced, and whether the agreement incorporates respect for constitutional and international human rights.” SERAP is further arguing that, “The government has a duty to demonstrate that the conditions for lifting the suspension of Twitter would not threaten or violate the enjoyment of Nigerians’ human rights online, and that the conditions are in pursuit of a legitimate goal in a democratic society.” According to SERAP, “Alhaji Lai Mohammed responded to our freedom of information request but his response is completely unsatisfactory, as he merely stated that the ‘details are in the public space,’ without sending a copy of the agreement signed with Twitter as requested.” The suit filed on behalf of SERAP by its lawyers Kolawole Oluwadare and Opeyemi Owolabi, read in part: “Nigerians are entitled to their human rights, such as the rights to freedom of expression, access to information, privacy, peaceful assembly and association, as well as public participation both offline and online.” “The operation and enforcement of the agreement may be based on broadly worded restrictive laws, which may be used as pretexts to suppress legitimate discourse, interfere with online privacy, and deter the exercise of freedom of opinion and expression.” “The statement by the Federal Government announcing the lifting of the suspension of Twitter after seven months used overly broad terms and phrases like ‘prohibited publication’, ‘Nigerian laws’, ‘national culture and history’. These open-ended terms and phrases may be used to suppress legitimate exercise of human rights online.” “Any agreement with social media companies must not be used as a ploy to tighten governmental control over access to the internet, monitor internet activity, or to increase online censorship and the capacity of the government to restrict legitimate online content, contrary to standards on freedom of expression and privacy.” “Section 39 of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended], article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights guarantee the right to hold opinions without interference, and the right to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers and through any medium.” “The Nigerian Constitution and human rights treaties impose duties on the government to ensure enabling environments for freedom of expression, privacy rights and other human rights, and to protect their exercise.” “While human rights law requires States to prohibit ‘advocacy of national, racial or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence’, States must still satisfy the cumulative conditions of legality, necessity, proportionality and legitimacy in any agreement with social media companies.” “The government has a legal obligation to promote universal Internet access, media diversity and independence, as well as ensure that any agreements with Twitter and other social media companies are not used to impermissibly restrict these fundamental human rights.” No date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.

Oil Bunkering: Why We Can’t Tolerate Acts Of Economy Sabotage – Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, says as a responsible government, even if his political party; Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is in opposition, his administration will not allow any act of economic sabotage such as crude oil theft in the state. Governor Wike said the war against illegal refining of crude oil is not about the political party but Nigeria and its survival. He stated that it is also about ensuring that the health of Rivers people is not endangered. According to a statement by his special media aide, Kelvin Ebiri, the Rivers State Governor made the assertion during a security meeting he had with heads of security agencies in the State and five local government chairmen at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Friday. “The mere fact that I am in opposition does not mean that I have to sabotage the economy of the nation. This country belongs to all of us and you know that oil is the major source of revenue for the federation that the three tiers of government share from,” the statement added. “So, you cannot, because you’re of the opposition, close your eyes and allow that to happen. No responsible government does that. This is not about the party. It is about Nigeria. It is about making sure this country survives and then also the health factor. “We must continue to take this war very seriously. Not only because it is sabotage to the national economy but also for the health of our people, which, for me, is the key why we must fight against this sabotage.” Governor Wike commended the security agencies and some chairmen of councils who have shown seriousness in the fight against operators of illegal crude oil refineries in the state. He, however, urged them not to rest on their oars because the fight is far from over, especially with such commitment to save Rivers people and all residents of the likely ailment soot causes. “So, let’s take this as a war that we must save our people. And we must save our nation. I commend you so far for your efforts. But we must redouble our efforts and not give any chances to these armed robbers that they called bunkers,” the governor said. “As far as I am concerned, they’re even worse than armed robbers. One who sabotages the national economy is worse than an armed robber.” Governor Wike explained that the list bearing the names of those selected to be part of the task force against illegal refining activities has been sent to the Department of State Services (DSS) for profiling. According to him, the prospective members are drawn from council areas where their chairmen have shown commitment to the fight. Governor Wike urged the DSS to be dutiful and attend to it quickly so that those who scaled can be assigned their responsibilities. “It is important that when you profile them, you do it quickly too so that they can start work. Those in whom we have no trust, we remove them,” Wike added. Speaking further, Governor Wike said he has approved the money that was pledged to councils that have identified and destroyed sites used for illegal crude oil refining. He clarified that only five local government areas have satisfied the conditions to get the fund. “I will not give a local government money that I have not seen any commitment. No, I won’t do that. I want to see commitment,” he said. “So, it is only those that have shown commitment that I have approved the money for.”

NDLEA Nabs Indian Businessman With 134,700 Bottles Of Codeine Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have detained an Indian businessman, Vyapak Nutal, for smuggling 134,700 bottles of Codeine syrup into the country through the land border between Nigeria and Niger Republic in Sokoto State. The suspect had loaded the consignment into trucks in Cotonou, Benin Republic, and drove through the land borders via Niger Republic before entering Sokoto State at the Illela border. NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi, said on Sunday that the suspect, who settled in a hotel in Sokoto State, began to look for buyers for the controlled drug. “While NDLEA operatives were on his trail, officers of the Department of State Security were able to apprehend him and swiftly handed him over to NDLEA on Wednesday 10th February 2022,” Babafemi said. Meanwhile, attempts by drug traffickers to export large quantities of Heroin, Methamphetamine, Khat, Tramadol and Cannabis through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) as well as three courier companies in Lagos were frustrated by narcotic officers who intercepted the illicit consignments. Nnamdi Kanu’s disciple accuses Nigerian Governor of working with IPOB’s DoS

Simon Ekpa, a self-styled disciple of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Saturday claimed that Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state created a parallel group to counter the controversial sit-at-home exercise in the southeast region. According to Finland-based Ekpa, IPOB’s Directorate of State (DoS), headed by Chika Edoziem, is averse to sit-at-home, whilst his own breakaway faction, ‘IPOB Autopilot’, continue to support the exercise — despite its suspension. It is noteworthy that the sit-at-home was originally embarked on due to the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the IPOB leader. However, Senate Minority Leader, Eyinnaya Abaribe, recently said that Kanu denied issuing the directive at a meeting with him, former Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu and two clerics at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters in Abuja.   “When they tell you that Umahi is creating parallel group to counter IPOB sit at home, he was talking about DOS. Today, while we the IPOB autopilot continue to push sit at home, DOS and their E-rat are countering the sit at home just exactly the way Umahi wanted it. Now you know!” Ekpa said on his known Twitter handle. POLITICS NIGERIA reports that IPOB had suspended its sit-at-home directive in the region. In what looked like a denial of Monday’s disturbances in Southeast states, IPOB had asked South East governors and security operatives to penalise purported enforcers of the suspended sit-at-home order in the region. In a statement issued in January by Media and Publicity Secretary of IPOB who has the pseudonym, Emma Powerful, the group distanced itself from the shootings in most Southeast states that has disrupted economic activities. The violence resulted in killings, burning of cars, while some residents were injured. Kanu is standing trial on charges bordering on treasonable felony.

After Crimefacts’ report, Police invite monarch over killing of seven in Imo

Ibe Pascal Arogorn, Owerri The Imo police state command has invited and interrogated Eze Augustine Iwuogu Ezemma 1, the traditional ruler in Mmahu Autonomous Community, Ohaji-Egbema Local Government Area of Imo state following his alleged complicity in the cold-blooded killing of seven persons in his community. Crimefacts.news had last week reported how the community accused the Imo monarch of murdering seven of his kinsmen last Tuesday. Crimefacts.news gathered that the traditional ruler allegedly used four notorious murderers who escaped last year from the Owerri prison to intimidate and silence opposition in the community. Police preliminary reports have linked the multiple murder to be cult related but recent findings by Crimefacts.news indicate that the cause of killings goes beyond cult clash. Among those killed last Tuesday were the Town union President-General, Charles Mgbaraho; his Secretary, Chastity Nwachukwu and the Publicity Secretary of the community, Chinedu Anene. Others are Edeme Okoro, Isaac Ojenya, Ndubuisi Okereke and Junior Ifeyinwoke. According to several community sources, Eze Augustine Iwuogu did not hide his misgivings over the appointment and so vowed to resist the Town union appointment until they were removed. Among several efforts to reverse the appointment or antagonise the appointees, some indigenes of Mmahu in Rivers states, loyal to the monarch, petitioned the Imo state Police command accusing the new Town union executives of causing problems in the community. But in the course of interrogation, it was discovered that the group loyal to monarch maybe complicity to the many killings in the community and as such four of them were detained last Thursday. A community source who gave his same as Akpi Okaro told our correspondent that, “sometime in June last year, in the course of a meeting in the palace of Eze Augustine Iwuogu, one Uche Nwokocha, while strolling round saw the four convicts who escaped from Owerri prison on April 5th 2021, at the back side of the palace. He came back and raised the alarm in the meeting among his kinsmen, two days after that being 6th June, they murdered him. On 15th June, 2021, Onyekachi Ugwuoha was killed by the same gang and on the 4th of July, 2021, Athanatius Nwokocha, Uncle to the murdered Uche Nwokocha was also killed by the gang for supporting newly appointed Town Union leadership and blaming the convicts for the ugly occurrences in the community.” POLICE INVITATION An anonymous source told Crimefacts.news on Saturday that Eze Augustine Iwuogu, Ezemma 1 was on Friday invited by the Imo police in connection with the killing of seven persons in the community.
