2023 Presidency: Nigeria Needs A Mad Man To Turn Things Around – Wike

State says the situation of Nigeria is so bad that the country needs a mad man to turn things around for the better. The presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said this while addressing delegates of the party in Kogi State on Wednesday. Wike appealed to the delegates to vote for him at the primaries, saying he has what it takes to govern Nigeria and take it to the promise land. “The energy in me is too much. I want to use the energy to work for the country”, he said “I have made myself available for my party, and to be voted to become the next president of Federal Republic of Nigeria. Never in the history of this country have we so divided. I can bring back the country back on its track of greatness. It doesn’t matter where you are from. It takes a mad man to govern Nigeria”, he said. He said Nigerians need a fearless and courageous person like him who can speak the truth to the power. He called on the delegates not to doubt his sincerity in turning the economy around. “As for me, if you don’t vote for me in our party primary, I will still remain a member of the PDP. I have benefited from this party, and so I have no excuse to give, for defecting to another party”, he said. The Presidential aspirant cast aspersions on those who turned their back against the PDP after benefitting from the party. In their remarks, the two former governors of the state , Ibrahim Idris and Captain Idris Wada, including the state party executive members extolled the virtues of governor Wike, and assured him of their support in the party presidential primary slated for the end of this month.

2023: APC ‘ll remain united after presidential primaries ― Tinubu

The National leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and presidential aspirant of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured that the party would remain united after its presidential primaries. Asiwaju Tinubu, who was a former governor of Lagos state also said that the increasing number of people seeking the party’s presidential ticket is good for democracy. The APC national leader stated this view late Tuesday after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The APC leader, it was gathered, met with President Buhari at his official residence in the Villa, to pay him the traditional Salah homage. Fielding questions from journalists on the fears being expressed about the unity of the ruling party, he said the party would remain intact and united after its presidential primary, pointing out that President Buhari had shown that he is in support of a transparent democratic process. According to him, “We are sure that we will remain united. You know our symbol is the broom, you don’t break it as you go. Nigeria requires commitment, a uniform system, and a stable country and that is the only way we can be very proud of Nigeria. “The President has shown a great example of leadership, gave us the freedom to say you want to run, you want to attempt, go ahead. He is a democrat and if we are running a constitutional democracy, you don’t hinder the desire, the wish of other people.” Also asked to comment on the increasing number of aspirants on the platform of his party, the APC, Tinubu said it was in the best interest of the country, adding that it showed that leaders were not abandoning the country. He said, “The more the merrier. The more they come, the more challenging it becomes for you to think deeply, focus on issues and be ready to serve and Nigeria. It’s all about service, it’s nothing else. Think wisely, get committed to your thinking to serve the nation and bring progress and prosperity to the lives of Nigerians. “It’s good for the country for so many of us to aspire to want to lead, we’re not abandoning our nation. But there’s only one chair and one possibility. We will do that.” The APC Stalwart, however, used the opportunity to congratulate the President for the successful Eid-el-Fitr celebrations across Nigeria, as well as his genuine efforts at confronting the challenges bedeviling the country for sustainable future. He said, “President has shown a great example of leadership. He’s been very honest and forthright with Nigerians. Yes, we’ll continue to be challenged within this short period of time, but it’s left for us, the followers, to help, to be ready, to persevere and give hope to the populace and yes, we can do it. We will do it.”

Don’t listen to Buhari, visit scenes of terrorist attacks, Akintoye tells UN secretary

Yoruba Nation arrowhead, Prof Banji Akintoye, has urged the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, not to listen to Nigeria’s President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), but to visit scenes of herdsmen and terrorists’ attacks. Akintoye also informed Guterres, who arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday for a two-day official visit, that the country is a failed state. In a statement signed on Wednesday and made available to reporters by his Communications Manager, Maxwell Adeleye, Akintoye said Buhari has mismanaged Nigeria’s diversity and ethnicity by running a “government of the Fulani by the Fulani and for the Fulani.” The statement was titled, ‘Your Visit to Nigeria, a charade if you don’t visit the theatres of the criminality of Fulani terrorists in South, Middle-Belt – Akintoye tells UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres’. “Your Excellency cannot get the true picture of how close to the precipice Nigeria is unless you visit the theatres of the criminality of this government. Visit the Middle Belt, behold the atrocities of Fulani herdsmen and marvel. Visit the Southwest. “Visit Ifon, also in Ondo State, whose traditional ruler was murdered by Fulani herdsmen. Visit Southern Kaduna where ethnic cleansing is a daily activity of the murderous Fulani nihilists. The same thing is happening in Taraba, Plateau, Niger, Ogun and Oyo states where Fulani herdsmen maim, rape, kill farmers and destroy farmlands in their land-grabbing drive across the southern region of the country. “Your Excellency, the list is endless! And the atrocities have not abated. The Buhari administration refuses to allow the victims arm and defend themselves whereas the murderers are allowed to roam about with AK-47 looting, raping, maiming, and killing,” Akintoye was quoted as saying. He continued, “You must be aware of how the secret security service of the Buhari administration invaded the home of Yoruba self-determination activist, Sunday Adeyemo Ighoho, killing and maiming innocent and law-abiding citizens and destroying property worth millions of dollars. “The Nigerian court system has described the invasion as a lawless and vagrant violation of Igboho’s rights. Costs running into billions of Naira were awarded against the Nigerian government. “But the Buhari government is lawless and cherry-picks which court decisions to obey and which to disregard. In saner climes which I am sure you are familiar with, the law is no respecter of persons and court judgments are binding on all. Not so the Buhari administration! “Hence, the generally acclaimed estimation of Nigeria today as a failed state. But before the situation gets out of hand, please act quickly!”

Tinubu: Rising Number Of Presidential Aspirants Good For Democracy

The National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and presidential aspirant, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has said the rising number of people working to secure the party’s presidential ticket is good for democracy. At least five APC governors, four ministers, many senators and other stakeholders of the ruling party are in the race for the presidential ticket. Speaking after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Tinubu said the development showed that leaders were not abandoning the country. Daily Trust learnt that the former governor of Lagos State met with the President at his official residence to pay him the traditional Sallah homage. “The more the merrier. The more they come, the more challenging it becomes for you to think deeply, focus on issues and be ready to serve and Nigeria. It’s all about service, it’s nothing else. But there’s only one chair and one possibility. We will do that,” he said. The Jagaban Borgu, while reacting to another question on the fears being expressed about the unity of the ruling party, said the APC would remain intact and united after its presidential primary. He said President Buhari had shown that he is in support of a transparent democratic process. “We are sure that we will remain united. You know our symbol is the broom, you don’t break it as you go. Soludo declares emergency on infrastructure, insecurity in Anambra

The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, on Wednesday, declared a state of emergency on insecurity and infrastructure in the state. Soludo assured the people that he would make the state an industrialisation hub. The governor stated this in Awka, on Wednesday, during a town hall meeting of traditional rulers, youth leaders and other stakeholders in the state. He said the event was put together to enable the state government interact and interface with the various stakeholders with a view to fronting a common good of the state. He frowned on the increasing rate of insecurity in the state and admonished the people to report anyone with questionable character living among them, adding that the people causing pain live within the communities. He also assured of continued consolidation of projects of his predecessor despite paucity of funds. He said, “Today marks 49days we assumed office. This is the second time we are calling this meeting to keep you abreast on our commitment in transforming the state. We will call you again in 100days. “Our first duty is to resurrect Onitsha. Onitsha must rise. Onitsha, being the Obi of Ndigbo. Almost all gutters in the city are all filled up. Distilling of Sakamori has commenced. All houses blocking the river must come down. “The presence of touts has pursued many businessmen away from the town. It is difficult to find where to park to do shopping. But we assure you that shopping in Onitsha will become a pleasurable experience soon.” “The presence of touts has pursued many businessmen away from the town. It is difficult to find where to park to do shopping. But we assure you that shopping in Onitsha will become a pleasurable experience soon.” While announcing the recruitment of teachers and health workers to make up for manpower deficit in the public schools and hospitals, Soludo also promised to increase the “N20m community choose your project initiative” of the immediate past administration to N25m. “We will partner with those with private farms to assist us in producing enough palm oil and coconuts we can consume and export,” he added. On Security, Soludo called for assistance from youths of various communities on intelligence gathering, assuring them that their identity would be treated with utmost confidentiality. “Traditional rulers and president generals must take charge of their communities. You must re-examine and revamp your local vigilante to forestall further breakdown of low and order. “Culture of silence must stop. I’m sure you know the hoodlums and you must expose them on time before they strike. We must resurrect community participation and mobilize youths to take back our societies,” he said.

ASUU is still a joke

By Aliyu Sulaiman SIR: Eight years ago as a final year student in one of Nigeria’s Federal Universities, I argued that the incessant strikes by ASUU were needless. I wrote a piece about how ASUU as a union was a complete joke. They had at the time embarked on an indefinite strike that would last six months. After all these years and after several warning and indefinite strikes by the union, I still believe they are a joke, perhaps more than I had ever believed before. The education sector is in shambles, agreed. But that is not the only sector that is in total disarray. The health sector is starving of funds. Doctors are grossly under-paid with health facilities inadequate and dilapidated. All the six geo-political zones in the country are facing one form of security challenge or the other. Nigerians are acutely under-policed, and the existing security personnel are underpaid, too. The reason why the university lecturers have decided to freeze academic activities in public universities, rendering students (youths) redundant is centered on funds (and the constant flow of funding). This is based on an executed ‘agreement’ between the government and the union, whereby certain amounts have to be paid for the development of the universities, especially for infrastructure and world-class teaching equipment, amongst other things. The persistent lack of sincerity on the part of the government has constantly meant that the agreements would be reneged, and that the lecturers would always consider downing their tools. This vicious cycle is one that the lecturers should be all too aware of, and it is what a lot of us find most irksome. How can a union with this array of knowledgeable members not be able to think outside the box for sustainable solutions to funding, without the need to render active-minded youths redundant? We all know that this campaign season makes the striking lecturers’ demands less pressing for government, more so because the current administration is not seeking re-election, coupled with glaring security challenges. Moreover, the educational system in Nigeria needs a comprehensive over-haul from top to bottom, such that adequate funding for universities alone will not come close to solving them. Who is going to strike on behalf of the millions of the out-of-school children roaming our streets? The primary and post-primary education system is arguably in need of more funding than the tertiary education system, if only to ensure that there is no mismatch between the graduates churned out and ultimately absorbed by the universities. On funding needs, deregulation of the tertiary education system is a more sustainable solution. When subsidies, wrong rules and guidelines that form barriers to competition and free markets are eliminated, the system would most likely thrive better. Universities will survive based on the quality of their facilities and the skills they offer based on the available courses in their institution. The education system worldwide is being decentralized with schools and classes becoming increasingly online and remote. Nigerians now earn foreign degrees without the need to travel outside the country, which means good money for these ‘smarter’ countries. There is an informal agreement across the country that ASUU strikes are usually factored into the duration of stay of each student, such that the student cannot be sure when he or she would graduate, considering the inevitability of strikes by ASUU. This de-marketing of the Nigerian universities would only help the course of the increasing number of private universities and foreign higher institutions. Strikes are outdated, just like the curricular and skills being taught in Nigerian universities. With these constant strikes by ASUU, the ends do not justify the means. Aliyu Sulaiman, Jigawa.

Badaru, Akpabio Join 2023 Presidential Race

Jigawa State Governor, Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, and the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, have declared their intention to run for president under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The governor obtained the nomination and the expression of interest forms at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday. Badaru had been initially linked to senatorial race ahead of the 2023 general elections, but reportedly changed his decision following a stakeholders’ meeting of the ruling APC at the Government House on Tuesday night. Though, it was not immediately known why he changed his ambition, the governor was said to have told the gathering that he was pressurized to contest for the presidential seat by his colleagues. Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Public Relations, Habibu Nuhu Kila, who confirmed the development said, “It is true that Governor Badaru has travelled to Abuja to secure nomination form for the 2023 presidential election.” He said he was capable, adding that if given the chance to succeed Buhari, he would continue with the president’s “positive programmes and policies.” Meawhile, Akpabio also promised not to allow Nigeria sink, noting that he would bring restoration, dignity, respect and succour to Nigerians. Akpabio said as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, 88 road projects which would have been abandoned, but for the fear of forensic audit initiated by the commission, was completed by contractors. He said shis wealth of experience as governor and as minister qualified him for president. “You have heard a lot of declaration but this one is uncommon. It is not only a message of hope, positive continuity and of the Egyptians you see today, it is a message of restoration of your dignity, respect in the ECOWAS region and beyond. “I am determined not to let our nation sink but drink from the deep well of experiences I have from service. “I seek your nomination to become your President come 2023. I thank ththpresident for the opportunity given me to make great advances beyond Akwa Ibom State. The president is fighting corruption the way I like corruption to be fought.”

Your Visit Shows The World Has Not Forgotten Us, Buhari Tells UN Secretary General

President Muhammadu Buhari has told the United Nations (UN) Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, that his visit shows that the world “has not forgotten us.” The President said this while receiving the United Nations scribe and his delegation at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday. President Buhari said the country and the African continent were already concerned that the attention on Russia and Ukraine would crowd out other issues. He said the focus on Russia and Ukraine could easily distract from other pertinent global challenges. The president also said terrorism remains a threat to global peace, security and progress, with many already killed, while millions displaced by the insurgents over many years. “When we assumed office, the North-East was the major security problem we inherited in 2015, but we have been able to make people understand that you cannot kill people and shout ‘Allahu Akbar,’ (God is great!). “It is either you don’t know what you are saying or you are simply stupid. God is a God of justice, so you cannot kill people and say God is great. Luckily the people understood our message and it has made great impact,” he said. President Buhari, however, said Nigeria remains grateful to the United Nations and some world leaders on their steadfast partnership in fighting terrorism. President Buhari told the UN scribe that the government had started a gradual, but steady process of resettlement and reintegration where citizens get encouraged to return to their farms, businesses and other pursuits in life. The President thanked the Secretary General for the maiden visit to Nigeria. In his remark, the UN Scribe, who had been in Borno State on Tuesday, said what he saw was a departure from the pictures of hopelessness and despair painted, adding that ”people exuded hope.’’ “Yesterday, I visited Maiduguri where the United Nations is supporting the internally displaced. I was deeply moved by their stories and struggles. “These include the struggles with hunger, with the World Food Programme projecting 4.1 million people in the North East of Nigeria to be food insecure in the upcoming lean season,” he said in a statement issued by his spokesman, Femi Adesina. Guterres said the United Nations had called for an additional 351 million dollars as part of the overall 1.1 billion dollars for the humanitarian response plan for Nigeria. “But despite all they have seen and endured, the people I met remain hopeful and committed to returning to their communities and resuming their lives. To that end, I welcome the establishment of the Presidential Committee on the Repatriation, Returns and Resettlement of Displaced Persons in the North East. “This spirit of hope amidst hardship – and solidarity in struggle – was also at the centre of my discussions with the Presidency today,” he added. The UN Scribe said discussions with President Buhari also touched on laying groundwork to ensure peaceful and democratic elections next year – and the full participation of Nigeria’s women and young people. At the media stakeout, the UN Secretary General told newsmen that measures to address security challenges in the country, Lake Chad and Sahel were discussed, which include the UN Integrated Strategy for the Sahel. Guterres thanked President Buhari for his unwavering support of the Multinational Joint Task Force and the Lake Chad Basin Commission, assuring more commitment from the UN on COVID-19 vaccinations, vulnerability of countries to global warming, global food crises response and reform of UN Security Council. He said the war in Ukraine will make things worse on global food, energy and financial systems, adding: “That’s why, in the earliest days of this war, I established the Global Crisis Response Group on Food, Energy and Finance, involving all UN Agencies and international financial institutions. The Steering Committee is chaired by Deputy Secretary General, Amina Mohammed.”

Abiola’s Daughter: Yahaya Bello Will Actualise My Mother’s Dream For Nigeria

Ms Hafsat Abiola-Costello, Director-General (DG) of Yahaya Bello Presidential Campaign Organisation, says the dream of her late mother, Kudirat Abiola, for a better Nigeria, and for Nigerian women will be actualised with a Yahaya Bello presidency. Abiola-Castello said this on Wednesday in Akure, Ondo State, while speaking with newsmen at a rally tagged: “South West Mega Women Rally for Yahaya Bello”. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Hafsat Abiola-Castello is the daughter of Kudirat, wife of Late Chief MKO Abiola, acclaimed winner of the annulled 1993 presidential election. Abiola won Nigeria’s presidential election on June 12, 1993, and the election was considered a free and fair presidential election in the political history of Nigeria. The women, who defied the heavy rain, took to the streets, and carried various placards with inscriptions such as; “Yahaya Bello, the best man for the job”, “We’re not interested in zoning, this is one Nigeria”, and “Yahaya Bello, hero of women inclusion,” among others. Abiola-Castello said Nigerian women had decided, to once again, take their destinies into their hands by supporting the Kogi State governor, the only governor that had given them a voice, and showed that women could turn stone into bread. According to her, if such a man is given a chance, he will do the same for Nigeria. “Seeing this huge honest crowd, I am confident that Yahaya Bello’s good deeds, belief in women, and giant strides in a women-filled government, have earned him the trust of Nigerian women. “And I assure you, he will never forsake you. He has demonstrated this loudly in Kogi,” she noted. Also, Mrs Nike Aroloye, leader of the South-West Market Movement for Yahaya Bello, said the women of Nigeria were already looking beyond the political party primaries. Aroloye, also the Deputy National President, Market Women Association of Nigeria, said: “We already see the ticket with Yahaya Bello. Once he gets it, we are marching straight to Aso Rock. All my market women are ready to support him.” Similarly, Nollywood Actress, Rose Odika, who led other South-West female stars to the rally, said: “I have said it before, and I will repeat it here, Yahaya Bello is the one we will support. “From all he has done for women and for his state in general, he is the one to beat. We will only support those who support us.” NAN reports that the women who participated cut across different key sectors and professions such as banking, media, Nollywood, medical practice, frontline entrepreneurs, market leaders, engineers and religious groups among others.
