Gov Abiodun’s ex-aide pleads guilty to $350,000 fraud in US

Abidemi Rufai, a former Senior Special Assistant to Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has pleaded guilty to his role in a $350,763 heist in the United States. According to The Seattle Times, 45-year-old Rufai pleaded guilty on Tuesday in US District Court in Tacoma to charges that he used stolen Social Security numbers and other personal data to file $350,763 in fake claims for pandemic unemployment benefits in 2020. The medium also quoted the US Attorney’s Office in Seattle as saying that Rufai pleaded guilty to stealing benefits from other states, as well as another $250,000 from other federal programmes. From 2017 and 2020, Rufai filed fraudulent claims for $1.7 million in federal tax refunds, of which $90,877 was paid out. Rufai has agreed to repay the stolen funds, though it wasn’t clear how he would make payments or whether his agreement meant he still had access to the stolen funds. “He has agreed to disclose all of his assets and to cooperate in US government efforts to recover on those assets,” U.S. Attorney’s Office spokesperson Emily Langlie said in an email Wednesday. “At this point we don’t know what kind of recovery will result.” Rufai, who has been in custody since his May 2021 arrest at New York’s Kennedy International Airport as he was about to fly to Nigeria, was Abiodun’s aide. The governor had suspended him and called for thorough investigation into the matter. Last August, a Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, had ordered the interim forfeiture of the funds and properties traced to Rufai. Justice Tijjani Ringim made the order sequel to an ex parte motion filed and argued by a counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ebuka Okongwu. The PUNCH had earlier reported that the US Department of Justice, District of Washington said Rufai used the pseudonym Sandy Tang and the stolen identities of more than 100 Washington residents to file fraudulent claims with Employment Security Department for unemployment benefits last year during the COVID-19 pandemic. The criminal complaint also said Rufai mailed some of the proceeds of his fraud to the Jamaica and New York addresses of his relatives with more than $288,000 deposits between March and August 2020. Rufai risks 30 years in prison for wire fraud.

According to him, he will embrace any route that gives Nigerians a voice to decide their future. He said, “Let me begin with our constitution. The constitution of our party identifies three ways to conduct our primaries. Now we have an electoral act that says to have consensus, all parties must sign up. “I think for me, whatever route we take must also capture the voice of our people. Both inside and outside of our party, people should have a say in the party affairs. “I have no problems with direct or indirect primaries. Whatever gives us the opportunity to engage Nigerians in a way that best suits them and gives party members the freedom to decide the future of our country.”

Rivers embattled House of Representatives member, Dr. Farah Dagogo, has been rushed to the police hospital in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. His Special Adviser on Media, Ibrahim Lawal, who confirmed the development on Wednesday said Dagogo suffered stomach and chest complications. Lawal said following the severity of his case, the police hospital referred him to another undisclosed hospital. He complained of stomach and chest complications. He is receiving treatment now”. Telegram Lawal further alleged that there was a plot by some agents of the state to “manufacture” more charges of murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, illegal bunkering and attacks on security agencies among others against Dagogo. He insisted that some state actors were hatching a plan to attack the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) where Dagogo was being detained to later accuse the lawmaker of being the mastermind. I’ve not yet donated vehicle to any APC delegate, says Malami

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami, has refuted the allegation of distributing expensive vehicles to officials of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi. Malami refuted the allegation on Tuesday in an interactive session with journalists in Birnin Kebbi. He said “At this moment, I have experienced a barrage of attacks, left, right and centre, some are local and others international, an attack that has to do with an allegation that I shared many expensive vehicles to delegates of APC. “As a person with some associates, neither I nor a friend of mine shared any vehicle with any delegate across the state.” Malami described the story as mischievous and misconstrued. “Let me state categorically that some of the foundations, such as Khadi Malami and Khadimiyya for Justice and Development Initiative I am associated with overtime, have workers who have demonstrated a greater capacity in the development of the state. “These associations have contributed immensely in poverty alleviation, provision of social amenities to remotest areas, empowering unemployed youth and women, as well as small and medium-scale farmers and businessmen and women, among others, in the state. “In appreciation of what the workers of the associations have been doing in the state and beyond, the supporters of the associations, collectively and individually, decided to solicit for support from well-meaning Nigerians that have been supporting the NGOs in order to reward those that have been manning the affairs of the NGOs,” he said. Malami explained that it was his friends and associates who donated and distributed vehicles to long-term workers in the Khadimiyya Foundation. “I know I had an interactive session with APC stakeholders some days ago and had accepted calls from Kebbi people to run for the state governorship; the meeting was not for distribution of vehicles to any APC stakeholder. “None of the APC stakeholders or delegates in Kebbi State was given any vehicle by me, and I have not yet donated any vehicle to any delegate. “The mischief-makers can contact the National Secretariat of the APC, get the lists of all the APC stakeholders and delegates in Kebbi State. “You too can do an investigative story to reach out to them, then you will realise how fictitious the claim is. “There is no connection between the names of APC stakeholders and the beneficiaries of the vehicles and are not connected whatsoever,” the minister pointed out.

Army Declares War On IPOB For Killing Couple Personnel

Nigerian Army yesterday said it would go after members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for the gruesome murder of army couple in Imo State. Daily Trust had reported how two soldiers, Audu Linus, a Master Warrant Officer, and Private Gloria Matthew, were shot dead and beheaded on Saturday when they were on transit to Imo State for their traditional wedding.   Army spokesman, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, in a statement issued in Abuja, described the killing as “gruesome, barbaric and most despicable”. “Apparently, the soldiers had embarked on the trip to fulfill the traditional rites of conjugating their matrimony, as the very well respected and cherished Igbo tradition demands. “Ironically, the fact that one of the soldiers, Pte Gloria Matthew who hails from Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo State, has an ethnic affiliation with the good people of South East Nigeria did not prevail on the sensibility of the dissidents. “This dastardly act, one too many, clearly portends the deep-seated hate, desperation and lawlessness with which foot soldiers of IPOB/ESN have been unleashing terror on Ndigbo, whom they claim they are on a mission to protect and emancipate, as well as other innocent Nigerians who are resident or transiting the South East. “This gruesome murder, in which they did not spare even their own child, clearly depicts callousness, impenitence and is indisputably a brazen act of terrorism perpetrated by IPOB/ESN,” the statement read. Nwachukwu said the dissident groups had continued to live in denial, while masquerading as unknown gunmen in their criminal violent campaign in the region. He urged members of the public to oblige security agencies with actionable information that would lead to the arrest of the criminals. “While we deeply condole with the families, relations and close associates of the victims, the NA has commenced investigation to unmask and bring the criminals to book,” the statement added.
