Ten persons have been confirmed dead after an accident on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. Ahmed Umar, sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, confirmed the incident. He said the accident, which involved a Mack truck and a Toyota Hiace bus, occurred at 4:30am around the Oniworo area. Umar said the accident was caused by road obstruction on the part of the trailer as well as excessive speed and loss of control by the driver of the bus. “A total of 19 people were involved in the crash which comprised 13 male adults and six female adults,” he said. “Two male adults sustained injuries while seven male adults, two female adults and one female child died in the accident.” According to Umar, the bodies of the deceased were taken to Ipara mortuary while the injured are at Victory Hospital in Ogere.   He expressed sympathy for the crash victims’ families and asked them to get in touch with FRSC Ogunmakin for additional details regarding the accident.

ISWAP fighters killed as troops repel attack in Borno

Troops of 25 brigade of operation Hadin Kai have repelled an attack by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Azir, Borno state. Azir is a village on the outskirts of Damboa town, Damboa LGA of the state. China records 60,000 COVID-related deaths in one month

China says it recorded at least 60,000 COVID-related deaths between December 8 and January 12. This was disclosed by the country’s national health commission on Saturday. According to the South China Morning Post, the recent figures are the first official toll to be released since the country lifted restrictions. On January 8, China lifted restrictions on foreign travel, ending its quarantine requirements for inbound travellers. Jiao Yahui, director of the national health commission’s medical affairs department, said medical institutes recorded 5,503 deaths as a result of respiratory failure triggered by COVID infection. He added that 54,435 other deaths were from people infected with COVID-19 but with underlying conditions, such as cancer or cardiovascular diseases. The commission also said most of those who died were over 65 years of age. As panic continues to spread on the actual situation in China and its implications globally, some countries have accused China of not being transparent about the latest outbreak. Some have gone ahead to impose restrictions on travellers from China, demanding negative COVID tests. Femi Falana, human rights lawyer and senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), warned the Nigerian government to make it mandatory for persons arriving in Nigeria from China to produce negative COVID test results. However, Ifedayo Adetifa, director-general of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), said the federal government is not yet considering severe COVID restrictions. He said the commission will keep reviewing the developing situation.

Wike: When G5 governors shut door of reconciliation, if heaven wants to fall — let it fall

Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers state, says the G5 governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will soon foreclose the possibility of reconciliation. Since the presidential primary of the PDP, there has been a crisis in the party over calls for Iyorchia Ayu to step down as national chairman of the party. The calls, championed by Wike and his allies, are based on the grounds that the PDP presidential candidate and national chairman cannot be from the same region. In an interview with the BBC on Friday, the Rivers governor said there will be no coming back once the G5 governors take a decision on their choice of a presidential candidate. “The point I am trying to tell you is that PDP should have their opportunity because there will come a time the door will be shut and nothing will happen. If that day comes, if heaven wants to come down, let it come down,” he said. “Nobody should threaten anyone. If we (G5) take the decision today that we will not support the PDP candidate, we will give reasons why we will not support him and nothing anybody will do about it. They should better be careful.” In December 2022, Wike said he will start campaigning for his preferred presidential candidate in January, but when asked about it during the interview, he said strategies are being put in place. “Why are you in a hurry? I didn’t mention the particular date in January. People should calm down. We are all politicians; we have political strategies. I don’t work as an individual. That’s what people don’t understand,” he said. “There are different strategies in going to war. What you see today is not what you see tomorrow. I laugh at them (PDP) when they say we are in touch with so, so governor.” Wike also reiterated his stance that the G5 governors won’t leave the PDP to any other party. “We are not like them. We can’t leave our house for armed robbers, we won’t do that. This is a house we built. We cannot leave it, for who? No way,” he said. “We will stay inside this house and fight. And we know that they have no choice but to allow peace to reign. They must bring the peace.”

199 Ghost Doctors Uncovered On Zamfara Payroll, Says Matawalle

Governor Bello Matawalle says the Zamfara State Government has identified no fewer than 199 ghost doctors who were in the state payroll that are yet to be found. Matawalle made this known while speaking to journalists in Maradun town, the headquarters of Maradun Local Government Area (LGA) of the state. According to the governor, though the state government was paying salaries to 280 doctors every month, it discovered only 81 doctors are active in the entire state. He further disclosed that he already met with the state chapter of the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) on how to trace those 199 ghost doctors who spent long periods of time collecting salaries illegally with a view to block those behind the manipulation. Matawalle explained that the discovery of the ghost doctors was as a result of the ongoing biomedical data capture of the entire state workforce through the office of the state Head of Service. The data collection exercise is said to be a reflection of the state government’s readiness to commence a proper implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage to the state workforce. “The problem is, once we say we are going to implement it (N30,000), we can’t just say we are going to pay people directly like that. No, there was a system,” Matawalle said. “We have developed a table and, unfortunately, during the exercise, it was discovered that there are over 280 doctors that have been collecting salaries from the state government, but in reality, we have only 81 doctors in Zamfara State.   “The labor union just confirmed to me why they delayed it — that they want to make sure that things go right because we cannot just continue like that as a government.” He assured the public that no genuine civil servant will be retrenched by his administration with regard to implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage payment. “I am not going to retrench anybody. In fact, I am going to give them (civil service) houses for all the civil servants. I have built 450 houses for them which nobody knows about it, but on Sunday, I will give them the keys,” he said.

Release Kanu to me, Soludo begs FG

The Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has called for the immediate and unconditional release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in detention since 2021. Soludo made the demand in Awka, the state capital, during the campaign kick-off of the All Progressives Grand Alliance on Saturday. He specifically appealed to the Federal Government to release Kanu unconditionally and immediately. Speaking to the mammoth crowd of supporters and party faithful, the governor added that if the detained IPOB leader cannot be released unconditionally, he should be released to him, saying he was ready to stand surety for him. He said, “I am making a passionate appeal to the Federal Government to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally. If he cannot be released unconditionally, I want him released to me and i will stand surety for him. “We need Nnamdi Kanu in the roundtable conversation to discuss the insecurity in the South-East. We must end insecurity in the South East and we need Nnamdi Kanu to be around.” Soludo promised to cater to Kanu and also offered to bring him to the authorities any time he was required. He noted that Kanu could not be in prison custody while the issues of insecurity are being discussed in the entire South-East. He continued, “We need him around the discussion table, we need him to discuss about the future of the South-East. If the Federal Government cannot release him unconditionally, I now offer myself to ask the Federal Government to release him to me. “I will provide him anytime he is needed. I will house him here in Awka. We need him released to end insecurity in the South-East. We need him to have true conversation about Nigeria. We believe in Nigeria and we are Nigerians. “We, some time ago set up the Truth and Reconciliation Committee to find out the root cause of insecurity in the South East and they have almost concluded their assignment. “But this issue of insecurity cannot be well addressed without bringing to the table the key players in this matter. “We have applied the kinetic and non kinetic approach to fighting insecurity in the South East but the non kinetic approach cannot be complete without the Federal Government releasing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. “We must bring him to the table because we need him to be part of this process and I call on the Federal Government to release him to me and for us to have a comprehensive discussion for the fate of the South East. “If we cannot release him based on the court process, I here by offer myself as the surety for his release and whenever you want him, I will hand him over to you “We shall provide him shelter and give him home and we make this plea in the true belief in the spirit of peace in the South East.” Soludo described APGA as the first registered political party in Nigeria with the name progressives, adding, “Anambra is the home of APGA and the home of progressives and we call on Nigerians to vote APGA all the way. “We are progressives and that is why we allowed other political parties and their candidates to come here to campaign because the state believe in a level play ground for all and sundry to campaign which some people while they were here did not do.” The presidential candidate of APGA, Justice Peter Umeadi (retd), described himself as the most qualified candidate to lead the country, adding that his administration as President would unify the country. Umeadi also said that he was the most transparent person among the candidates contesting for the post of the president of the country. The APGA presidential candidate said that since he became the APGA’s candidate in June last year, he had traversed the length and breadth of Nigeria canvassing for votes. He assured Nigerians that he had a realistic manifesto that will address true federalism, agricultural revolution, education, sports and culture, healthcare delivery, knowledge-economy, human security, transport and communication, women, youth, children and disabled, environmental impact assessment and census in Nigeria. A former governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, described APGA as the party to beat, adding that the party would sweep the polls come February 25. “We have had 21 over 21 and we have had 19 over 21 and this time, it is going to be 21 over 21,” he added. At the rally, the party handed over the flags of the party to the governorship candidates of the party in Delta, Nasarawa, Jigawa, Adamawa and Abia states as well as the state and National Assembly candidates of the party.

How ‘yahoo boy’ tricked me into Nigeria – US victim

A United States citizen, Vonapolouis Moss, has explained to the Kwara State Police Command how she was tricked into travelling to Nigeria by Joshua Awoyele, a 23-year-old suspected Internet fraudster widely known as “yahoo boy”. Moss of 2962, W 64th Court, Merrillville, Indiana 46410, USA said she was lured into the country on January 9, 2023, by the suspect. She further added that she met him on TikTok, a social media platform, and he claimed to be an American by the name of Howard Adams currently working in Nigeria. Narrating the incident, the state police command said the suspected fraudster identified as Joshua Awoleye, a Higher National Diploma student of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin allegedly lured the foreigner and swindled her of the sum of $1000 when she came to Nigeria. Parading the suspect at the police headquarters in Ilorin on Friday, the Commissioner of Police, Paul Odama, said that Awoleye of Sabo-Oke Road, Ilorin lodged Moss in a hotel and defrauded her. According to the CP, “On January 12, 2023, at about 1200 hours, based on actionable intelligence, operatives of the SCID at the Kwara State Police Command arrested one Awoleye Joshua Oluwatofunmi, “male” of Sabo-Oke Road, Ilorin, within the premises of a hotel along Flower Garden Road, Ilorin, in company with one Vonapolouis Moss, an American citizen. “A preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, who is an Internet fraudster known as Yahoo Boy, presented himself to the victim on TikTok, a social media platform, as an American by the name of Howard Adams and ripped her off for about 1,000 USD. “The suspect later took a step further by luring the victim to fly into Nigeria on January 9, 2023, through the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, after which she flew into Ilorin the next day and was received by the suspect. “The suspect also deceitfully took an unspecified amount of USD from the victim before she was rescued by police operatives. “The necessary authorities have been contacted for appropriate action,” he said. Odama added that the victim had been moved into secure custody by the state police command pending her return trip to the USA. Speaking in an interview with newsmen, Vonapoloius said that she arrived in the country on Monday night and moved from Lagos to Ilorin on Tuesday morning. “We met on social media and he invited me to visit Nigeria but when I came, he took me to the Bureau de Change to change my money to Nigerian currency and he also took me to Shoprite. When the money on me finished, he told me to tell my people to send more.” The foreigner who said that she liked Nigeria, however, said that she would like to return to the US. “I like Nigeria and I would like to come back but what I want now is to go back to America,” she said. The Police Commissioner said that although Joshua confessed, he would not be handed to the Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission but would be investigated by the police and charged to court after a thorough investigation of his alleged crime.

British Prime Minister condemns ‘cowardly’ execution of British-Iranian

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he was “appalled” by Iran’s decision to execute British-Iranian dual national, Alireza Akbari, PA Media reported on Saturday. “This was a callous and cowardly act, carried out by a barbaric regime with no respect for the human rights of their own people,” Sunak wrote on Twitter. Foreign Secretary James Cleverly also took to Twitter, saying the “barbaric act” deserved “condemnation in the strongest terms.” “This will not stand unchallenged,” Cleverly wrote. Iran had sentenced the former top politician to death earlier in the week over espionage charges. (dpa/NAN)

2023: PDP calls for disbandment of Ebubeagu security outfit in Imo

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Saturday called for the disbandment of the Imo state government-backed Ebubeagu security outfit in the state. The PDP made this call while speaking to newsmen in Owerri, through the State Publicity Secretary, Collins Opurozor. The main opposition party alleged that the Ebubeagu security outfit would hijack the security of the election in Imo state on the day of the 2023 election in Imo and manipulate it in favour of the ruling party. According to PDP, “Now something very important must be mentioned. From the beginning of human society, the essence of political governance has been the security of lives and property. Government exists for the sake of life and continues to exist for the sake of the best life. That is how philosophers put it. But today in Imo State, the regime of Senator Uzodinma has completely resigned from its responsibility of protecting the lives and property of the Imo people. Agents and militiamen of the government have been accused of masterminding some of the killings in the State. The gruesome massacre of fourteen Otulu youths at Awo-Omamma by Uzodinma-backed Ebubeagu Militia remains a case in point.” PDP alleged that “More than half of Imo territory is presently under the occupation of bandits, terrorists, kidnappers and other non-state actors who levy death upon Imo people and make life a misery. Farmers have abandoned their farmlands and the logical outcome has been an unprecedented rise in poverty and starvation, including crime. Three years ago, Imo was the most peaceful state in Nigeria. Our State is now a killing field!” It was the view of the main opposition party that, “As the 2023 elections draw closer, the failed regime of Senator Uzodinma is already perfecting a wicked plot to deploy violence to manipulate electoral outcomes and extend its illegitimate hold onto power. Our Party has intercepted credible intelligence about the planned role which the Uzodinma-backed Ebubeagu Militia would play in this process of derailing democracy in the State. On Election Day, what may be witnessed is a scenario where accreditations would be allowed to take place with BVAS, and from that point, Ebubeagu Militia would take over the process to complete the actual voting and transmission. The massively-rigged February 2022 State Constituency By-election in Ngor Okpala provided the ground for the APC regime in Imo to test this crime against democracy.” “Imo PDP, therefore, demands the immediate disbandment of Ebubeagu Militia. The Inspector General of Police must rise to the occasion. Since Ebubeagu began its operations in Imo State, insecurity, killings, abductions and arson have only risen astronomically. There is no justification for the Militia to continue to exist! “Imo people should realize that if this bestial regime in the State is allowed to set everywhere on fire and make all the parts of Imo uninhabitable, we all would become refugees in foreign lands. Therefore, everyone in the State must now come out, join hands and participate in the electoral process, with the clear and patriotic objective of permanently sending this unelected regime packing. This is what we owe ourselves for the sake of our collective survival. This is what we owe our generations yet unborn. The man dies in all who keep silent in the face of tyranny, PDP said.

Tinubu’ll do better than Obi, Atiku – APC

A support group, Likeminds Initiative for Tinubu, says Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of All Progressives Congress(APC) is better qualified to lead Nigeria, than any other candidate in Feb. 25 presidential election. Mr Augustine Esiekpe, the National Coordinator, LikeMinds Initiative For Tinubu, said this at a strategic meeting to mobilise voters for Tinubu/Shettima for the general election in Abuja on Saturday. According to him, an Asiwaju as president will do a better job as president than Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, he will be sagacious, strong will and effect the needed change in the country. Esiekpe said that Tinubu had a better character than any other presidential candidate in the race. He said former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar shouldn’t have joined the 2023 presidential race, because it was the turn of the South to rule. “The North as represented by President Muhammadu Buhari has had its eigth years share, so what is Atiku looking for, where is he representing. “The presidency should rotate between the North and the South because there must be justice, fairness and equity. “If we give Obi or Atiku our future is not secured, we should look at Tinubu who is better with record of performance to show,” he said. He said the group would mobilise voters in the Federal Capital Territory to ensure landslide victory for APC. Speaking on mobilisation, he said it was key to winning election, adding that in Lagos people hardly vote but rather resort to playing football on election day. He said that the group’s major work was to identify people with PVC and move them to vote on the day of election, adding that it would also bring INEC officials to educate members on BVAS. This according to him, would enable the group to sensitive others so they would understand process on election day and would be able to educate others. “The Obidient camp is doing this sensitisation seriously. These are some of the sensitisation we need to embark upon, campaign isn’t about gathering people at rallies, but going from place to place to sensitive voters.
