Imo West: Supreme Court Sacks PDP Candidate, Onyereri

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has nullified the primary election of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Imo West Senatorial District which produced Jones Onyerere as its candidate for the National Assembly Election. The apex court nullified the primary election on the ground that it was conducted in Owerri, the Imo State Capital instead of Orlu which is the Senatorial Headquarters of Imo West. In a judgement on the appeal filed by Nnamdi Ezeani, Justice Emmanuel Agim said the PDP violated section 87 (9) of the Electoral Act by conducting the primary election outside the venue clearly stipulated by law. The apex court held that by the judgment, PDP will not participate in the next month’s senatorial election having failed to produce its candidate within the time allowed by law. Justice Agim held that since the time for the conduct of the primary election to nominate candidates was already over, it is deemed that the party would not have a candidate in the February 25 National Assembly poll. Justice Agim warned the parties to always conduct their affairs within the ambit of the law adding that section 87 (9) of the Electoral Act is clear on where primary election should be conducted.

Court dismisses PDP’s suit seeking disqualification of Tinubu, Shettima

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Friday, dismissed a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’ suit seeking the disqualification of Sen. Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), and his vice, Mr Kassim Shettima, for the 2023 general elections. Delivering judgment, Justice Inyang Ekwo, dismissed the suit on the ground that the PDP lacked locus standi to institute the suit. Justice Ekwo, who held that the case was caught by the principle of issue estoppel, described the suit as an abuse of court process. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the PDP, in its originating summons marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1734/2022, had sued the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), APC, Tinubu and Shettima as 1st to 4th defendants respectively. In the suit filed on July 28, 2022, the party challenged the validity of Sen. Tinubu to contest for the 2023 presidential election as APC candidate on the ground that Mr Shettima’s nomination as his running mate was in breach of the provisions of Sections 29(1), 33, 35 and 84{1)}(2)} of the Electoral Act, 2022 (as amended). It argued that Shettima’s nomination to contest the position of vice president and Borno Central Senatorial seat contravened the law. The PDP, which sought an order disqualifying the APC, Tinubu and Shettima from contesting the presidential election scheduled for Feb. 25, also sought an order nullifying their candidacy. It further sought an order compelling INEC to remove their names from its list of nominated or sponsored candidates eligible to contest the poll. But the defendants, in their preliminary objection filed by Lateef Fagbemi, SSN, and argued by Thomas Ojo, urged the court to dismiss the suit for want of jurisdiction. They argued that the plaintiff (PDP) lacked the locus standi (legal right) to file the case, which invariably was challenging the political party’s decision and its nomination of candidates for the polls. They further submitted that such act was an internal affairs of APC which they argued was non-justiciable. Delivering the judgment, Justice Ekwo agreed with the defendants that the PDP had no locus standi to file the matter. According to him,.where there is no locus, the court has no jurisdiction. He said the court found that the action was incompetent for lack of locus standi. Ekwo held that that matter bordered on the internal affairs of the APC in which the PDP lacked locus to file the case. On argument about non-disclosure of cause of action against the respondents, the judge said that there was a nexus between locus standi and a cause of action. He, therefore, said that since the PDP had no locus standi, it also did not have any cause of action against the defendants. Justice Ekwo also agreed with the defendants that the suit was an abuse of court process. “It is express in the provision of Section 29 (5) of the Electoral Act, 2022 that the right of action on the matter for which the applicant/respondent (PDP) has filed this action is given to ‘any aspirant who participated in the primaries of his political party’,” he said. The judge said that it had been established that the PDP was not an aspirant of the APC. “Therefore, there is no iota of law which support this action. It is on this ground that I find that this case is an abuse of process and I so hold,” he said. Justice Ekwo, consequently, dismissed the suit for constituting an abuse of court process.

Peter Obi’s presidency will redefine governance in Nigeria – LP

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) will re-define governance in Nigeria, Mrs Dudu Manuga, the party’s National Women Leader said in Gombe on Friday. Manuga told the Newsmen that Obi remained the most competent candidate that would meet the expectations of Nigerians. According to her, Obi’s experience and impeccable character over the years, make him the most suitable candidate that Nigerians should trust with their votes on Election Day. She said Obi, being a two-term governor of Anambra, a successful entrepreneur and banker, and leader with sound international economic background was most qualified to be elected president to make Nigeria better. “The growing acceptance of Peter Obi amongst youths and women is because they believe that he would bring a new narrative to governance that will reorder the nation for the benefit of the people. “Obi will not disappoint Nigerians if elected because he is competent, trustworthy and has the needed integrity to lead the country to greatness,’’ she said. Manuga said as the national women leader, she and her team were working to mobilise more women and use their numerical strength to ensure Obi’s victory. “We women are the ones naturally endowed with the capacity to give birth. We have been pregnant, carrying in us the new Nigeria. “We are almost at the point of birth and we are not ready to have a still birth or a miscarriage. “The strength we need to give birth is our Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) which we have tagged `Peter’s Victory Card’. “We will use this strength all over the country to push and ensure a new Nigeria is born,’’ she stressed. Manuga appealed to women and youths to collect their PVCs before the expiration of INEC deadline and ensure that they vote wisely by voting for Obi.

PDP Crisis: PDP BoT member, Nwosu dumps party

A member of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Prof. ABC Nwosu, has resigned his membership of the party. He cited the refusal of the party to respect its power rotation/ zoning principle as reason for his action. Nwosu served as Minister of Health during the administration of Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo administration (1999-2007). The elder statesman who is a known ally of the Presidential candidate of the PDP, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, conveyed his decision to quit the party in a letter dated January 12, 2023 which was addressed to the National Chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu and the acting chairman of the BoT, Adolphus Wagbara. In the letter, Nwosu said he was leaving the party because of its failure to adhere to the zoning arrangement in its constitution. It read in part, “I hereby resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party and its Board of Trustees with effect from today Thursday 12th January, 2023,” the letter reads. “This resignation for me is a matter of conscience and principle because of the Party’s inability to adhere to the rotation provision in its (PDP) constitution. “The journey to rotational presidency between the North and South of Nigeria has been a long and arduous one and I have been involved.” Nwosu equally said the opposition party “must learn” to respect the provisions in its constitution and the agreement reached by party members. He maintained that, “Nigeria and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) must learn to keep to an agreement reached by a Constituent Assembly (1995), and enshrined in the Party’s (PDP) Constitution (1998),” Recall that months preceding the party’s Presidential Primary, various interest groups including Southern Governors of PDP extraction, demanded that the Presidency be zoned to the South after President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure. Specifically, party faithful mounted pressure using various platforms to demand that the party zone its Presidential ticket to the South. However, the party’s national executive committee (NEC) approved the report of its zoning committee which recommenced that the presidential ticket should be thrown open to all zones. However, intrigues took the better part of negotiations ahead of the PDP presidential primary election held in May 2022, leading to the emergence of Atiku as the party’s Presidential candidate. The party is battling to resolve the internal strife which emanated from events which followed.

A woman identified as Florencia Amado Cattaneo has allegedly cut off her husband’s penis and stabbed him to death. Her late trumpet player husband, Pedro Federico Zarate, was found dead in the couple’s flat in the Altos de San Lorenzo area of Argentina. The 41-year-old suspect has been arrested by police for the horrific alleged murder and sent for psychiatric assessment, according to Mail Online. The suspect – a psychologist – was arrested on 11th January after fleeing to her mother’s house in a taxi ‘with bloodstains on her hands’, her sister Patricia told local media. Her husband’s body was found by his sister-in-law on the bed at the apartment he shared with his wife and five-year-old son. He had stab wounds all over his body, including his chest, and his genitals were mutilated, according to local media reports. 2023: We Are One Step Closer To Victory, Says Obi In Enugu

Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi has said that Nigeria is one step closer to victory and as such Nigerians must get their PVCs to ensure that they vote him in as their president come February 25th, 2023. Speaking to a mammoth crowd during a rally in Enugu on Thursday, Mr Obi said, there is no doubt as to his performance if Nigerians make it a point of duty to elect him as their leader. “We are one step closer to victory. You can count on us to deliver on our promises,” he assured those present. Adding that “in order to exercise your constitutional right to elect me as your President, you must vote. In order to vote, you must collect your PVC. INEC Nigeria has extended the PVC collection deadline to January 29. “Don’t miss the opportunity,” the LP flagbearer emphasized. He thanked the Obidients in Enugu State for the “massive love and support shown”, noting that the campaign was indeed a successful one. We need ‘Stingy Man’ like Obi to run Nigeria Meanwhile, a chieftain of the Labour Party, Prof. Pat Utomi, has responded to the notion that the party’s presidential candidate Peter Obi is stingy, saying that the country is currently in dire need of such a man to stop the economy from bleeding itself out. He said the former Anambra State governor has the qualities to stop what he referred to as “transactional government” that has become the order of the day in governments of the Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress. “If you look at his Anambra experience, let’s not forget that Peter Obi among the things he has done is rebuild democracy. In Anambra they used to lock up their governors in the toilet and stuffs like godfathers, schools were closed, everything was shut, and no pension benefits were being paid. When he comes to that process, Anambra becomes a new kind of place, pension was paid, and others.   “So from what I know of him, he has a transformation mindset. I think there’s this thing they say that he is stingy, my goodness the only thing you need now is a stingy man to run the country. The guys are bleeding the place, you need a guy to stop this nonsense, stop the bleeding,” Prof. Utomi said on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday. On why he thinks Nigerians should choose Obi ahead of other candidates for the February 25 presidential election, Prof. Utomi said he is convinced that the candidates of the PDP and APC will not take the country forward. He maintained that they will continue with the “transactional government” and their friends will get rich while Nigeria will get stuck.

Work Against Me And Regret It, Kwankwaso Warns Ganduje

The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has said whoever works against him in Kano in the forthcoming 2023 presidential election will regret it. Ganduje had recently told party supporters in the state that Kano will repeat what happened in the 1993 presidential election when it supported a southern candidate (late MKO Abiola) and rejected a citizen of the state (late Bashir Tofa), in a reference to voting massively for Tinubu against Kwankwaso. But responding days after, Kwankwaso said, “I had a rally not long ago, which was one of the best rallies. I had one in Wudil, the southern senatorial district. I had one in Bichi, northern senatorial district. I opened my office in Kano Central and one of the best rallies because, you can’t compare it with the ones by some of the candidates who had crowds that came to Kano from neighbouring states and so on. “Now, you see, I don’t want to talk about that man. I don’t know whether he said it or not. But the reality is that, anybody who work against NNPP or Kwankwaso in 2023, one day, he will regret it, that he made a mistake. “Anybody who knows me, who knows my antecedents believes that, if I win this presidential election, Kano will have maximum benefit, of course northern Nigeria will benefit and of course the country. “So, I am surprised if you go and say I should hold a rally. Rally, I have done many rallies in Kano. In just recent months, January and December in Kano, in all the three senatorial districts. So, what is the problem about holding rally in Kano?”

Obi to speak on economy, security at Chatham House

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), is scheduled to speak at Chatham House, the United Kingdom’s foreign and policy think-tank institution. Chatham House, in a statement on its website, tagged the event as ‘Nigeria’s 2023 elections: A vision for policy change and institutional reforms’. The LP candidate is expected to speak on his plans for policy and governance reforms in Nigeria. The event will be hosted by Alex Vines, the managing director of the risk and resilience Africa programme.   “Nigeria is scheduled to hold presidential and national assembly elections on 25 February as well as governorship and other subnational elections on 11 March,” the post reads. “The elections end President Muhammadu Buhari’s two terms in office since his election in 2015 and mark the first time he is not a candidate in a presidential election in 20 years – an important marker in Nigeria’s trajectory of democratic consolidation. “Nigeria’s Electoral Act, enacted in February 2022, has contributed to improved hope around the election process, reflected in the addition of 12.29 million new voters, 9.51 million of which were then validated, in Nigeria’s voter registration exercise, bringing the total number of registered voters to more than 93 million. “Nigeria stands at a critical juncture, having suffered from two recessions in the past six years, unprecedented levels of physical and food insecurity, persistent fuel scarcity, and high levels of crude oil theft. “Civic fatigue also remains an important challenge and Buhari’s three main policy pillars of security, economy, and corruption continue to be defining issues for citizens. “Peter Gregory Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, discusses his vision for policy and governance reforms in Nigeria, including the priorities for tackling deep-rooted insecurity and corruption, and measures to promote social and political mobility for Nigerian citizens.” Obi’s scheduled visit to the Chatham House comes weeks after Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), visited the institution.
