I quit pulpit for Benue politics – APC gov candidate

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Benue State, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, has said that the terrible situation of the state informed his decision to leave the pulpit and venture into politics. Rev. Fr Alia stated this when he unveiled his strategic blueprints at a press briefing held in Makurdi on Sunday. The Catholic Church priest turned politician insisted that his quest of turning around the state into a better place and liberating the people from poverty was the reason he left the pulpit. He said, “I have a good cause to step out from the podium (pulpit) to do what I am doing because our state is in a bad shape. We have a responsibility to bring betterment for our state. “Benue is too rich to be poor, to do anything less will be not to appreciate what God has done for us. My government will be centred on seven pillars – the foremost is to secure lives and property. Unveiling his blueprint, the Rev. Fr said that his security plan would evolve a policy resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons, strengthen the implementation of the anti-open grazing law of the state as well as introduce the use of automated security systems among others to tackle the insecurity in the state. The governorship candidate said that if given the mandate in the forthcoming election, his administration will focus on agriculture and rural development, commerce and industry, human capital and social development, infrastructure and environment, information and communication technology and political as well as economic governance. The Rev. Fr said that all public health centres in the state would be upgraded and equipped while pregnant women will have access to free anti-natal care in all general hospitals and his administration will enforce free primary education. He also promised to run an inclusive government in the process of developing the state to a level the founding fathers of the state envisioned but which had been truncated due to bad governance. “When you have wrong people in government, the result is wrong. When you play by the principle of transparency, everything works. “The green revolution will make us come alive as it was in 1983 when Benue was indeed known as the ‘food basket’. The present government in the state has perforated the food basket. Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State bears testimony to all states saying President Muhammadu Buhari provided everything a state needs so why is Benue different?” Alia posited.

Lagos hotelier shoots guest, two others during argument over N4500

A 53-year-old hotelier, Kingsley Enageghe, has been arrested by the Police in Lagos for allegedly shooting a guest at Queens Victory Guest hotel located at Olaonikaju close, off Ijesha bus stop. The bullet which pierced through the victim, Kelvin Nwabunor’s thigh, also hit the barman and Nwabunor’s friend in the legs Trouble, as gathered, started during an argument between Nwabuno, 35 and Enageghe, who is the Director of Queens Victory hotel, over the former’s delay in paying for an extra day. Explaining what led to the shooting, the bar attendant, Charles Edet, said Nwabunor paid for three days of lodge but stayed for four days, without renewing payment for the lodge. When accosted, he said Nwabunor told him he was expecting money from someone. According to Edet, “ the owner of the hotel told me to go and move his things out, but on getting to the room, I told him politely. But he told me that he would renew his payment and also pay for extra days, and that I should hold on for him because he was expecting some money to drop into his account. “I told him to go and explain to the owner of the hotel. His friend accompanied him and my boss accepted. “After some hours, he withdrew the money and gave it to my boss. Later, the guest called my boss to complain that the television in his room had not been working since he checked in. He requested that it should be changed since he had paid for extra days. I heard both of them exchanging banters. The owner of the hotel called me and instructed me to lock their room and chase them out, but I could not. He came back furious and asked after the guest. Both of them started pushing each other. Immediately, my boss went inside his office and came out with a gun. “He shot at the guest. Unfortunately for me, the bullet hit me in the leg because I stood in between my boss and the guest, trying to calm my boss. It also hit the guest’s friend, Animashaun Abdullahi, in the leg” Nwabuno’s account On his part, Nwabuno said he lodged in the hotel on January 3,2023, alone and paid for the lodge via transfer. He added that when he appealed to the hotelier to hold on till 4 pm,on the fourth day, for him to receive some money to pay for the extra one day, the owner refused, stating rather, that the new law was that every customer should pay before noon. Narrating, he said, ” I went back upstairs. By then my wife and child were already with me. “My wife came visiting with my eight-month-old son. So, I asked my friend Abdullahi to help me pacify the director to wait till 4 pm. He agreed and gave us back the room key. “By 4 pm, the cash I was expecting came in. I went to the ATM to withdraw some money, only to receive a call that the director had sent my family out and locked the door. I rushed down to the hotel. The amount in question was N4500, but I paid N9,000, for an additional extra day to avoid embarrassment. It was after payment that I told the bar attendant to go inform the director that my television had not been working. But he did not answer the staff, so I went to him to plead with him to make repairs on the television, he said that I should never tell him what to do. “He started insulting me and I insulted him too. He gave me back my money and told me to leave his hotel. I was going upstairs with my wife, son, friend and a staff member of the hotel to get my luggage when he approached me from behind, with a gun. “He pushed me and I pushed him back. The next thing he did was to cock the gun, moved backwards and threatened to shoot. He pulled the trigger, and a bullet hit me in the thigh. My friend Abdullahi and a staff member of the hotel were also hit by the bullet. “Fortunately the bullet did not hit my wife and my baby,”. Doctor’s Account Dr Hassan Ademola of Iwalewa Hospital told Vanguard that when the patients were brought with gun wounds, he alerted the police for permission to treat them. He said:“We went for multiple x-rays which revealed that the bullet passed through their legs. We were able to remove the bullets which were shown to the police officer that came into the theatre with me. When Vanguard arrived at the hotel premises, the building had been sealed. A staff of the hotel who spoke on the condition of anonymity disclosed that a near similar incident occurred on December 14, 2022, after a guest who lodged in one of the rooms hurriedly left to attend to an emergency. He was said to have explained to the owner of the hotel that his younger brother would come and lodge in his stead. But when his younger brother came, he reportedly discovered that the room had been given out to another guest. An argument, according to the member of staff ensued, in the process of which he said his boss brought out his gun threatening to shoot at the guest. “ My boss fired into the air. The man that came to lodge there hurriedly left without using the room”. Confirming the incident to Vanguard, spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said, “the suspect has been arrested and will be prosecuted as soon as investigation is concluded”

Trial of Boko Haram suspects in detention to resume March — FG

The Federal Government has perfected plans to commence the second phase of the prosecution of Boko Haram suspects currently being held in a military facility at Kainji, Niger State. The Solicitor-General of the Federation, SGF, and Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mrs Beatrice Jedy-Agba, who made the disclosure to newsmen on Sunday, said the planned trial of the detained terror suspects would resume in March. It will be recalled that the Federal Ministry of Justice had recently acknowledged the special intervention granted by President Muhammadu Buhari for the provision of funds and other logistics for the commencement of the exercise. The SGF revealed that the trial, which has been done in phases, was temporarily halted to ensure proper investigation of the suspects and to put necessary measures in place to ensure that they were given a fair trials that would meet global standards. She said the federal government was committed to ensuring that justice was dispensed to assuage the feelings of victims and survivors of terror attacks and to decongest the detention facilities. According to the SGF; “The federal government is taking steps to reconfigure the military holding facilities to make it adaptable and conducive for recommencement of trials. “We will start the prosecution by the end of the first quarter of 2023. We are in the process of renovating and, in fact, reconstructing facilities such as the Courtrooms and residential areas. “It is important to ensure that there are enhanced measures put in place. We are utilizing Military facilities and therefore, they were not built like proper Courts. “The resort to the use of Military facilities is to ensure that trials are conducted in a safe and secure environment. There are risks associated with moving such large number of accused persons at the same time for trial, so this is one critical issue that is of utmost concern. “We have secured all relevant approvals to proceed with the projects and we are working very closely with the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and other military authorities to ensure that by the end of the first quarter of 2023, we will definitely start trials,” she added. Besides, Mrs Jedy-Agba, said the Federal Ministry of Justice was concerned about the pain and plight of victims of terrorism, likewise the sensitive issue of the rights of the accused persons. “The whole idea is to ensure that while respecting the rights of the defendants, we also have to consider the sensibilities of Nigerians who have been victims of terrorism, as well as the general security of Nigerians as a whole. “So, we will, as much as possible, ensure that the minimum human rights requirements are met. We will open the trial venue for observations of select Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), as well as human rights institutions, like the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). “We are working with the Legal Aid Council (LAC) and other stakeholders to ensure that accused persons have access to justice. “We are obviously not going to open the place up, because of security concerns. I’m sure you are aware that recently, like a few weeks ago, there was an attempt to hit the facility. “So, obviously, it is not going to be as open as you may want because we want to ensure that the security of our judges, witnesses and interpreters are protected,” she added. The SGF said the number of accused persons in the scheduled trial was huge and appreciable, saying she was however not in a position to give the specific number as arrests were still being made in the anti-terrorism fight. “I don’t want to be specific on that, because the figure changes every time, as security agencies keep making arrests. “I cannot say for certain, how many they are right now. But it is quite a sizeable number’’, the SGF added.

Two killed in Ukraine despite Russia ‘ceasefire’

Two Ukrainians were killed and another nine were wounded despite Russian leader Vladimir Putin unilaterally ordering his forces to pause attacks on Orthodox Christmas, Kyiv said on Sunday. As a result of “Russia’s armed aggression”, one person was killed and another eight wounded in the eastern region of Donetsk over the past 24 hours, Kyrylo Tymoshenko, deputy head of the Ukrainian president’s office, said on Sunday. One more person was killed in the northeastern region of Kharkiv and another was wounded in the southern region of Kherson over the same period, Tymoshenko said. “Despite the so-called ‘ceasefire’ declared by the Russian occupiers, over the past day, the enemy launched nine missile and three air strikes and fired 40 attacks from multiple rocket launchers,” Ukraine’s defence ministry said in a separate statement. “In particular, civilian infrastructure was hit.” Putin had ordered a 36-hour ceasefire to allow Orthodox Christians to mark Christmas which is celebrated on January 7 in Russia and Ukraine. The unilateral ceasefire ended at 11:00 pm in Kyiv (2100 GMT) on Saturday. Kyiv and AFP journalists on the ground said there was little sign the fighting had eased on Saturday. “After midnight the enemy launched seven rocket attacks on Kramatorsk and two on Kostyantynivka,” said Pavlo Kyrylenko, head of the Donetsk regional administration. The Russian defence ministry insisted Saturday it observed the halt in fighting but repelled a number of Ukrainian attacks and killed dozens of Ukrainian troops. Ukraine had dismissed the halt as a tactic by Russia to gain time to regroup its forces and bolster its defences following a series of battlefield setbacks. Sergiy Gaiday, head of the Lugansk regional administration, said that Russians were redeploying forces from Bakhmut, the current epicentre of the fighting, to the city of Kreminna. “We are expecting an intensification of hostilities,” he added, pointing to freezing temperatures. “Our heavy equipment will finally be able to move forward faster.”
