ASUU President: Military Govt More Sympathetic To Plight Of Lecturers

Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, President of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), says the military government era in the country was more sympathetic to the plight of lecturers than the current civilian administration. He said this at the unveiling of 50 tertiary textbooks published by Nigerian authors under the sponsorship of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), on Thursday in Abuja. “Thank you very much for this honourable minister and all of us who are present here today. I want to thank my colleagues for raising the issues and I think it is very important. I will just say a little thing about what is TETFUND and how did it originate?” “In 1992, the union was on strike and negotiating how we use to do then few years ago with Obafemi and co, and when we finished, the government said how can we fund it and we said challenge us, we will tell you how to fund this agreement. And they challenged ASUU, it didn’t take 3days and we came up with this idea of TETFUND, which was accepted by government then military. I have seen that the military are even more sympathetic… Then TETFUND came into place. The decree was signed 1993. ASUU had to go on strike the third time to ensure that TETFUND board is funded and the money was released.” On the ‘no work no pay’ policy of the Federal Government against striking lecturers which has resulted in eight months of unpaid salaries, Osodeke called on Nigerians to increase pressure on the government to save tertiary education from collapse. While describing TETFund as a brainchild of the union, he commended the agency for transforming the nation’s higher education sector. The ASUU president called for increase of education tax from the current 2.5percent to 10 percent to enable TETFund mobilise more funds to totally address challenges confronting the sector. While decrying the poor attitude of some big companies and wealthy Nigerians on the payment of education tax, Osodeke said there is need to reposition and expand the education tax net to bring about more resources for tertiary education institutions. Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, who unveiled the 50 new textbooks said the publications would end the dominance of foreign academic materials in the nation’s education institutions. Adamu who was represented by the Minister of State for Education, Goodluck Nanah Opiah, said overtime, Nigeria’s tertiary education institutions became dependent on books published outside the country with the attendant consequences of the herculean processes and unfavourable foreign exchange rate. “It is equally worrisome that the quality of most academic publications in our country leaves much to be desired. It is therefore expected that nourishing the culture of quality authorship and the production of indigenous books will not only ensure the availability of relevant books in the diverse subject areas taking cognizance of our local environment and sensitivities but will also safeguard national pride and reduce the demand for foreign exchange.” The minister also urged TETFund and the academia to go beyond publishing in English Language to promoting authorship in local languages in line with the recently approved National Language Policy. In his remark, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc Sonny Echono, said the fund has set a minimum target of 50 textbooks per year, while assuring that the newly published books would be distributed to tertiary institutions’ libraries at no cost. “All the books we have published so far, the initial publications are going to be distributed to the libraries of our tertiary institutions free of charge. It is the subsequent publications that students will be buying or other researchers will buy,” he said.

NFIU officially bans cash withdrawals from ALL government accounts, vows to probe offenders

The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) has banned cash withdrawal from all federal, state and local government accounts. Modibo Tukur, NFIU director-general, spoke to journalists at a conference in Abuja on Thursday. Tukur said the ban would take effect on March 1, 2023. He said the agency will launch investigations against any public officials engaged in cash transactions after the end of February this year. According to Tukur, the NFIU will collaborate with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to investigate government officials that withdraw cash from public accounts. The director-general added that the directive to go cashless will help to curb corruption in public offices, saying that the country’s money laundering laws as well as other anti-graft laws will be fully applied on erring government officials. He also said the decision was in line with Nigeria’s transition to a fully cashless economy initiated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Consequently, he said all financial institutions have been instructed to stop cash withdrawals from government accounts from the given date, stressing that defaulters will be prosecuted alongside their accomplices. “The rate of withdrawals above the threshold from public accounts has been alarming, over N701 billion has been withdrawn in cash from 2015 till date,” he said. “The NFIU had told banks and government agencies at all levels to go fully digital by moving online, as all transactions involving public money must be routed through the banks for the purpose of accountability and transparency. “This is not reversible as we are only enforcing the law. As far as we are concerned, Nigeria will become a full non-cash economy by March 1, 2023 this year. “As a consequence, any government official that withdraws even one naira cash from any public account from March 1 will be investigated and prosecuted in collaboration with relevant agencies like EFCC, ICPC and the NPF. “For government exigencies, only the President has the power to grant any waiver to any government official considering the importance of the situation; either for national security, health, or other important reasons.” The implementation of the unit’s decision will come into force about two months after the CBN’s cash withdrawal policy, when weekly cash withdrawals limits will fixed at N500,000 for individuals and N5 million for corporates. The policy is scheduled to take effect nationwide from January 9, 2023. NFIU had earlier announced the government’s plan to stop cash withdrawals from federal, states and local government accounts.

Oshiomhole: How Obasanjo tried to transform Nigeria to one-party state

Adams Oshiomhole, former national chair of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo tried to transform Nigeria into a one-party state. Speaking on Thursday at the APC presidential campaign rally in Benin, the Edo capital, Oshiomhole said when Bola Tinubu, APC presidential candidate, was the Lagos governor, he defended multiparty democracy in Nigeria. Oshiomhole, former governor of Edo, said history will never forget Tinubu and his fight for democracy in the country. “Today, across Nigeria, if you are going to understand why Obasanjo failed to transform Nigeria to a one-party state, you cannot forget the dogged fight of our presidential candidate to maintain and defend multiparty democracy in Nigeria,” he said. “Unless we get the politics right, we cannot fix the economy. “The world is unanimous that multiparty democracy is the way to go. I want young people to remember where we are coming from. Our youths need to know who laid the foundation for the crisis we face and the crisis our presidential candidate is going to resolve. “We are not lamenting it, but we must make you understand your past in order to appreciate the future. “By 1999, President Obasanjo took over ANPP. He appointed the chairman as his adviser and called the governors to move. By 2003, he rigged out all the south-west governors. He took out Lam Adesina, Segun Osoba — all the south-west governors — and planted PDP in the south-west. “Obasanjo tried to take Lagos and Tinubu stopped him. Tinubu showed him he is field marshal of politics while he (Obasanjo) is the army general. At the end of the day, Lagos survived. The rest of the south-west, Obasanjo rigged them over. “Asiwaju decided he is not going to cry. He retained Lagos. They moved away the commissioner of police; they moved away INEC… because Obasanjo wanted to play a do-or-die politics. But Asiwaju said ‘you (Obasanjo) will do; we will live’. Tinubu came back to reclaim Oyo, Ekiti, Osun, and Ondo states.”

Obasanjo Jealous Of Me, Obi’s Endorsement Won’t Work – Tinubu

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu on Thursday, slammed former President Olusegun Obasanjo for his endorsement of Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) in the February 25 presidential poll. Tinubu spoke at a rally held at the University of Benin Sports Complex in Benin City, the Edo State capital. Tinubu, a former Lagos State governor, said Obasanjo is “jealous” of his achievements, adding that the “the blind” cannot lead “the blind”. He also said the former President’s endorsement of Obi won’t work or make any difference in the outcome of the election in the next couple of weeks. Tinubu recalled that as Lagos governor from 1999 to 2007, whilst Obasanjo was President, he “punished” him and millions of residents of Lagos by allegedly withholding local government funds that belonged to the nation’s commercial nerve centre. Tinubu also accused Obasanjo and his then Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, who is now the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), of corruption. Tinubu alleged that both Obasanjo and Atiku seized the Federal Government’s allocation to Lagos and used “Nigeria’s funds” to buy cars for their girlfriends through shady privatisation scheme. “Can that man recommend a leader for you in Nigeria? Is that not sending an agent to pick your pocket?” Tinubu asked thousands of APC supporters at the rally. “A blind leading the blind. I am sorry I am not insulting visually impaired people. But it won’t work, they will end up in the ditch. If I talk about Obasanjo and Obi…one who doesn’t know the way cannot show the way,” the APC candidate said. Despite the many patronising visits of presidential candidates to his Abeokuta home, 85-year-old Obasanjo on January 1, 2023 shunned 17 candidates and endorsed Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, saying he has an edge over other contestants. Obi’s endorsement by the former Nigerian military head of state between February 1976 and October 1979 has since riled the candidates of the APC, the PDP, amongst others. Similarly, the leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum, Edwin Clark on Tuesday endorsed Obi as his preferred candidate. Obi was also previously endorsed by leader of pan Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Ayo Adebanjo. Obi, who has been put ahead of other candidates in many pre-election polls of late, is popularly amongst youths who are thirsty of genuine national change but only time will tell the winner of the February 25 election. According to Section 34 of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for the conduct of elections, a presidential candidate can only be announced as the winner if he or she “has the majority of votes cast at the election; and has not less than one-quarter of the votes cast at the election in at least two-thirds of all the States in the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja”.

G5 United, Will Announce Preferred Presidential Candidate, Say Ortom, Wike

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and his Benue State counterpart, Samuel Ortom on Thursday said their alliance within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) known as the G5 or the Integrity Group remained united. The two governors also said the G5 will soon announce its preferred choice of presidential candidate for the February 25 election in Nigeria. Wike and Ortom spoke at the Mapo Hall in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital, during the flag-off for campaigns for the reelection of Governor Seyi Makinde. Makinde, Ortom, Wike are members of the PDP G5 alongside Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu. Grateful to everyone who made our official campaign flag-off a success today! I especially thank my brother governors and other eminent party members who joined us in Ibadan for the event. I thank the good people of Oyo State for turning up in their numbers to show their support. pic.twitter.com/A7p23vz2aQ — Seyi Makinde (@seyiamakinde) January 5, 2023 Decked in traditional attire synonymous with Yorubaland, Wike, Ortom, Ugwuanyi and Ikpeazu took turns to address the crowd of PDP supporters, persuading them to vote Makinde, whom they described as the “Youth Leader of the G5”, for second term in office. “You all know that Seyi Makinde has done well since he came in 2019 and therefore the only way we can appreciate more and benefit more is for him to go back and complete the good work he has started,” Wike told the cheering crowd. Wike urged the crowd to vote the PDP in the governorship election in the state, the various state House of Assembly, House of Representatives and Senate seats. “The other one, Seyi will come to you,” he said of the G5 choice of a presidential candidate. A U-Turn On Obi’s Endorsement? Ortom’s Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Terver Akase, in a statement on Tuesday, had said the governor “strongly recommends Peter Obi to Nigerians” following the endorsement of the Labour Party’s presidential candidate by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. However, Ortom on Thursday dismissed “social media gossip”, saying the G5 will let Nigerians know where it is headed at the appropriate time. “We want to assure you that the Integrity Group and the G5 governors are committed members of the PDP in our various states. “We have a challenge with the national leaders of our party because they have failed to deploy the internal resolution mechanism to solve the problems after the convention. “We are committed to PDP in our various states and at the appropriate time, we are going to let you know where and what to do. We are united, we are together; don’t listen to gossip on social media – we are committed to PDP and all our candidates in our states,” the Benue State governor said. The PDP Deputy National Chairman in the South-West, Taofeek Arapaja; the party’s Chairman in Oyo, Bayo Ogungbenro; amongst other party faithful were also in attendance. However, the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar; and the party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu; were conspicuously absent from the event on Thursday. Unending Squabbles For months, the G5 has been at loggerheads with Atiku and Ayu over the chairmanship of the latter. The five dissatisfied governors want Ayu to step down for a southerner as a precondition to support Atiku’s decade-long ambition in the February 25 presidential election. But Ayu has insisted that he would only resign after his four-year constitutional term. Wike and his allies were reported to have met the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu in London on Thursday on a possible deal but both the Rivers State governor and Tinubu have denied the meeting. In November, Wike promised logistics support for the campaigns of Obi; and his New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) counterpart, Rabiu Kwankwaso. Wike has also of late hobnobbed with APC stalwarts like Adams Oshiomhole and Governors Dave Umahi (Ebonyi), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), and Ben Ayade (Cross River). While Wike and his allies have not been seen to campaign for Atiku, it is not clear whether they will support Obi, Kwankwaso or Tinubu in the contest for Aso Rock’s top job.

2023: Reject Moneybags, Obi Urges Nigerians

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi has urged the Nigerian people to reject moneybag politicians in the February 25 election. “Moneybags have played a lot of roles but they brought us to poverty,” Obi said during a campaign in Ekiti State on Thursday. The LP presidential candidate spoke during an exclusive interview with Channels Television when asked to respond to comments by legal luminary, Afe Babalola who said the highest spender and not the best among the candidates will win the presidential election. However, Obi said it is time Nigerians rejected moneybags to elect quality leaders who will bring about the desired change in the country. “It is time to reject them (moneybags). I am pleading for Nigerians to reject them because they cannot continue. If they continue, we are going to be impoverished,” Obi said. Thank you Ekiti OBIdients for an awesome outing, and show of love. I wish to reiterate my very special thanks to Ewi of Ado -Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe, and his council of chiefs, Afe Babalola (SAN), the Management of Afe Babalola University Ekiti. pic.twitter.com/GNEtix06ix — Peter Obi (@PeterObi) January 5, 2023 ADVERTISEMENT   The former Anambra State governor also asked Nigerians to shun ethnic and religious sentiments in voting during the forthcoming presidential election. Obi said he is the most qualified of the 18 candidates jostling for the top Aso Rock job and promised to provide jobs for youths. Of late, Obi has been endorsed by elder statemen like former President Olusegun Obasanjo; leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum, Edwin Clark; as well as nonagenarian leader of pan Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Ayo Adebanjo. Obi, who has been put ahead of other candidates in many pre-election polls of late, is popularly amongst youths who yearn for genuine national change but only time will tell the winner of the February 25 election.

Putin orders ‘temporary’ ceasefire in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed the country’s Defence Minister to order a ceasefire in Ukraine over Orthodox Christmas. The ceasefire will kick in for 36 hours starting at noon on January 6. Orthodox Christmas is traditionally celebrated by many on January 6 and 7. According to the Kremlin’s press service, Putin made the announcement in response to an earlier call by Russian Patriarch Kirill for guns to go silent over the Orthodox holiday. “Due to the fact that a large number of citizens of the Orthodox faith live in several areas of the conflict zone, we call on the Ukrainian side to observe a ceasefire and allow them to visit Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services,” said a statement posted to the Kremlin website. Patriarch Kirill has been an avid supporter of the Kremlin’s actions in Ukraine — including telling Russian soldiers that dying for the cause would “wash away all sins.” Earlier on Thursday, in a call with Putin, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan asked the Russian leader to implement a unilateral cease-fire to support efforts to end the war. In response, Putin repeated Russian demands that Ukraine accepts Moscow’s recent annexation of four regions of Ukraine before serious peace negotiations could begin. The annexation moves have been widely condemned as illegal, and Russian forces have failed to maintain control over the territories.

FG to transfer 613 rehabilitated repentant terrorists to states

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Lucky Irabor says 613 rehabilitated low-risk repentant terrorists will be transferred to their state governments for reintegration into society. Irabor made the disclosure during the fifth Stakeholders’ Meeting of Operation Safe Corridor (OPSC), on Thursday in Abuja. Represented by the Chief of Defence Training and Operation, Maj.-Gen. Adeyemi Yekini, the CDS said the 613 clients are currently undergoing deradicalization and rehabilitation handled by the OPSC. He said that the meeting would exhaustively discuss the Deradicalization, Rehabilitation and Reintegration (DRR) Programme ahead of the transfer of the rehabilitated clients to their state governments. Irabor said the OPSC was established by President Muhammadu Buhari in September 2015 as a window for willing and repentant terrorists to lay down their arms and undergo a structured DRR programme. He added that the scheme was a multi-agency and humanitarian operation utilising the expertise of over 17 services, ministries, departments and agencies, supported by local and international organisations and friendly nations. The CDS said the successes of OPSC had continued to resonate within the region and in the diaspora, thereby attracting the interest of researchers from far and wide. “It is also important to mention that upon graduation from the programme, each client will be provided some food and personal items, as well as a start-up pack according to the trade learnt during training to enable them to set up small businesses and start a new life.” Irabor recommended that the receiving state governments should provide necessary support to enable the ex-combatants wade through the transitional and most challenging phase of their lives. “We are optimistic that working closely with local and traditional authorities, the states can deploy security apparatus at their disposal to effectively track and evaluate the re-integrated ex-combatants. “I must emphasise that it is critical for all stakeholders involved in the reintegration processes in order to mitigate, or completely eliminate incidences of recidivism,” he said. Irabor said the Armed Forces had significantly degraded Boko Haram and Islamic State terrorists and restricted them to a small portion of Sambisa Forest and isolated islands on the Lake Chad. According to him, through consistent and effective air interdictions along with well-coordinated clearance operations on positively identified strongholds of the insurgents, troops have continued to inflict heavy casualties on the groups and their leadership. “These sustained operations continue to put pressure and confusion within the ranks of the adversary causing many to surrender to the armed forces. “As at today, over 83,000 insurgents and their family members have surrendered, while those captured have been tried and convicted to various jail terms by the law courts. “As we speak, many more captured combatants are being held in several correctional facilities and their trial is ongoing,” Irabor said. The CDS said that the military has been adopting kinetic and non-kinetic methods to win the war against insurgency. “I must emphasise that counterinsurgency operation is dynamic and requires a lot of ingenuity and proactive strategies to achieve success. “One of such strategies adopted by the Federal Government is by extending an olive branch to low-profile members of the insurgent groups who form the critical mass,” he said. The Coordinator of OPSC, Maj.-Gen. Joseph Maina said the programme had successfully processed 1,573 clients comprising 1,555 Nigerians and 18 foreign nationals from Cameroon, Chad and Niger since its commencement in 2016. Maina said that all the foreign clients were transferred to their respective countries for reintegration. He said that the 613 clients were transferred to the DRR camp on Sept. 8, 2022, to commence training, adding that among them were five foreigners from Chad and Niger. The OPSC coordinator disclosed that 19 of the clients have been transferred to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital neurological centre for expert psychiatric management. At the meeting, Maina said it was to work out modalities for the smooth transfer of the clients to their national and states authorities for reintegration after graduation in February. “Specifically, at the end of this meeting, all stakeholders would be fully abreast with activities of OPSC and DRR Programme in particular. “The State authorities and the MDAs would know in specific terms, the roles they would play in the transfer as well as reintegration process of the clients. “Identify and recommend in specific terms affordable resettlement package for the clients and assign responsibility to relevant MDAs to provide. “Determine the mode of community sensitization, camp visitation and community service programmes to take and ratify the graduation date and initiate arrangements for the ceremony,” he said. The Secretary to the Government of Adamawa, Mallam Bashiru Ahmad, said the state had been collaborating with OPSC to bring clients’ parents together and prepare communities to receive them after deradicalisation. He said they were at the stakeholders’ meeting to look at what could be done to ensure the effectiveness of the programme and expressed optimism that the effort would yield the desired result. On her part, Borno Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Zuwaira Gambo, said the state had received the largest chunk of the repentant terrorists since the programme started. Gambo assured that the state would continue to assess the clients even after graduation from OPSC in Gombe to ensure that there were ready for reintegration into their communities. She said the only difference between the Borno model of deradicalisation and OPSC was the military involvement, adding that the Borno model was more civil in outlook. According to her, the repentant terrorists live with their families in Borno camps while the camp in Gombe only allows family visits. She called for more support from the federal government and relevant stakeholders for the state government to achieve its desired objective.

If 2023 election is about comedy, Tinubu ‘ll win — PDP

The Atiku-Okowa-led Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign has said Thursday’s campaign rally embarked upon by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, in Kano State further exposes the APC candidate’s lack of capacity. Phrank Shaibu, the Special Assistant, Public Communication to Atiku Abubakar, who said this in a statement in Abuja, said Tinubu’s Kano outing further proves “Tinubu has nothing to offer.” Shaibu said after spending so much money to organise a rally in Kano State, the candidate of the APC candidate could not even deliver an inspiring speech to the crowd of supporters who gathered to listen to him speak. He said, “In a bid to conceal his inability to deliver a coherent speech, the APC candidate said rather than speak, he would dance instead. ‘Today, I have come home to Kano. All I want to do is dance. I want music,‘ he said. “Unfortunately, Tinubu’s dance moves proved to be as uncoordinated as his unintelligible speech. The people and the gods rejected him. “But this would not be the first time that he would be doing such. In Bénin on Thursday, It was a mixture of ‘bala blu’ and concoction as he mumbled: ‘I will turn the so-called Yahoo Boys to experts in manufacturing and creation of chips and datjfgfdfgxfvvf.” The Atiku Media Aide also recalled that “At the APC rally which was held at the Trade Fair Complex in Minna on December 14, 2022, Tinubu also could not muster the energy to address the crowd that had been waiting for him for over six hours. “On mounting the podium, the APC candidate shouted, ‘Niger Sai Bagode,’ with a brief response from the crowd. Tinubu thereafter left the venue, a situation that made the Master of Ceremony announce the end of the campaign in Niger State. “The APC campaign council hurriedly put out a statement, claiming that Tinubu’s inability to address the crowd had nothing to do with ill health but he was rather overwhelmed by the crowd. Bollocks. “At the APC rally in Ebonyi State where he managed to speak for 20 minutes before a rented crowd, Tinubu spent seven minutes acknowledging governors and chanting, ‘Great Ebonyi, greatest of the greatest’. “When it was time for him to deliver his speech properly, his mental deficiency was laid bare when he said “electric power is a super highway… they could not even make a down payment for the roasted corn (sic)”, whatever that means.“ He also said, “Similarly at the town hall in Owerri, his weakness was again exposed when he described the town hall as being different from “Balabu, Blu blu, Bulaba. “Clearly, these are warning signs which Nigerians must not ignore as they head to the polls next month. “If this election were about comedy, then Tinubu would win hands down as his speeches have become excellent material for Tik Tok, Internet memes and even stand-up comedians but unfortunately this is serious business.“ The PDP campaign spokesman noted that with debt and unemployment at an all-time high, Nigeria has been “infected by the sickness called APC.” He gave credit to the Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike for aptly likening the APC to “stage four cancer” while he was commissioning the new police headquarters in Rivers State in July 2021. Shaibu however urged Governor Wike to seek medical attention if he wants to continue to hobnob with the APC against the wishes of his people of Rivers State. He said, “Already, the so-called strongman of Rivers politics is appearing emaciated by the day as he continues to work for the success of a sick and ‘cancerous’ party. “It’s not only unpatriotic but tendentiously wicked for Wike to enter a deal to promote a candidate whose mental and physical abilities are suspect. “His inability to sell Tinubu, a man who is yet to explain his role in the celebrated heroin trafficking case that led to the curious forfeiture of $460,000 to the American government in Rivers State has continued to give him sleepless nights but there is more pain for Wike in the coming days. “The loud and repeated chants of ‘Atiku’ at the PDP rally organised by Governor Seyi Makinde in Ibadan where all the G5 governors were present should serve as a wakeup call to the rebel governors. The people are clearly not with them. “For Governor Makinde, it is time to wake up and smell the coffee. Nothing can stand in the way of a moving train.”
