No Crisis In Our Party, APC Insists Despite Adamu, Omisore’s Resignation

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has insisted that there is no crisis in the party despite the recent resignation of its National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu; and National Secretary, Iyiola Omisore. In a statement on Saturday by APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the party said contrary to reports of deepening crisis, “the APC stands as one strong, dynamic, resilient and progressive party”. According to the APC, the resignation of the two leaders showed the party’s level of institutional maturity and quality of its leadership which place the best interest of the party first and above personal egos and ambitions. The party also dismissed reports of disharmony among members of its National Working Committee (NWC) over possible successor to Adamu, saying that they are “purely speculative”. It added that the position of the NWC on the subject of succession to any vacant office would be communicated via the official channels of the NWC. “Change in the life of any individual or institution is constant and inevitable. As Africa’s largest political party, our demonstrated capacity to adapt to change and emergent realities always stands us out, and sets us beyond the wishes of doomsayers. “We remain committed to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Administration towards uplifting the quality of life of all Nigerians,” the statement added. On Monday, the Deputy National Chairman (North) of the APC, Senator Abubakar Kyari, emerged as the party’s National Chairman. Kyari succession of Adamu as the party’s chairman followed a NWC meeting in Abuja. Briefing reporters after the NWC meeting, Kyari formally announced the resignation of Adamu and Senator Iyiola Omisore as the party’s National Chairman and National Secretary respectively. Kyari further said that in line with the constitution of the party, the Deputy National Secretary, Festus Fuanter, will serve as the acting National Secretary of the APC.

NANS condemns tuition hike in tertiary institutions, threatens protest

The National Association of Nigerian Students has condemned the planned increment of school fees by tertiary institutions in the country. In a statement signed by the National PRO, Giwa Temitope and released on Saturday, NANS declared that the government’s action is “insensitive” and “embarrassing”. The association also stressed that the government has what it takes to fund education and make it accessible, noting that the introduction of the student loan scheme is a sham and a bait to make Nigerians accept fee increments. The association stated that there is no justification for an increase in school fees across tertiary institutions and Unity schools. It demanded that the increase in school fees should be suspended, adding that those who have implemented the policy should reverse it immediately. “We must state categorically that there is no justification for increment in school fees across our tertiary institutions and even Unity schools. Our demand is clear and simple; the attempt to increase school fees must be suspended. And, those that have floated it must reverse it with immediate effect.” NANS also called on Nigerian students to prepare for an all-round protest until the Federal Government reverses the policy, similar to the one during the prolonged ASUU strike. “We call on Nigerian students to brace up and be prepared for an all-round protest as was done during the prolonged ASUU strike until the Federal Government reverses this policy. “The increment of school fees at UNILAG and the planned increment across tertiary institutions in the country has shown this administration to be a very insensitive one. “As a matter of fact, it is most ridiculous and embarrassing that the government will be introducing fees increment without thinking of rescuing over 133 million Nigerian people from multidimensional poverty. “Increment in fees across tertiary institutions will only complicate the poverty situation of the country and also increase the number of out-of-school children. “As an association, we believe that the Nigerian government has what it takes to massively fund education and make it accessible. In fact, the student loan that was introduced by the Federal Government is nothing but a sham and bait to lure the Nigerian people into accepting increments in fees payable. “Beyond the fact that the terms of the loan are ridiculous, history has taught us that not every applicant will be considered. And, even if all of them were to be considered, it still does not justify an increment in an economy that tops the unemployment index. Rather than give loans, the government must provide grants and scholarships for students.”

Four Held Over India Naked Women Video, May Face Death Penalty

Indian police have arrested four men accused of parading two women naked in front of a mob in a northeastern state where months of ethnic violence have left at least 120 dead. The suspects were identified from a video clip of the incident in early May that went viral on social media on Wednesday, causing outrage across the country. “Four main accused arrested in the Viral Video Case,” police in Manipur said on Twitter late Thursday. The video clip showed the women walking naked along a street, being jeered at and harassed by a mob in the state, where the authorities have imposed an internet shutdown. Manipur’s state government, led by the ruling Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said police took action when the video surfaced on social media more than two months after the incident. A “thorough investigation” was under way, the state’s chief minister N. Biren Singh tweeted. “We will ensure strict action is taken against all the perpetrators, including considering the possibility of capital punishment,” he added. The incident came at the start of the violence in Manipur, which was sparked by a dispute over access to government jobs and other perks. Homes and churches were torched, with tens of thousands of people fleeing to government-run camps. The clashes between vigilante gangs from rival communities have continued intermittently, pitting the majority Meitei, who are mostly Hindus and live in and around Imphal, against the mainly Christian Kuki in the surrounding hills. In a detailed report to the court in June, civil society group Manipur Tribal Forum said many gruesome acts of violence including rape and beheading had not been investigated by state authorities. One such incident appeared on Twitter Thursday reportedly showing an aide to a BJP lawmaker in the state holding a victim’s severed head, and disappeared from the platform within hours. The Kuki community had protested Meitei demands for reserved public job quotas and college admissions as a form of affirmative action, stoking long-held fears that they might also be allowed to acquire land in areas currently reserved for tribal groups. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has faced criticism from opposition lawmakers, said on Thursday in his first public remarks on the violence that the country was “shamed” by the incident. India’s Supreme Court also warned Modi’s government that, if it does not act, “we will”.

NAF airstrike destroys ‘illegal refinery’ in Rivers

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reportedly destroyed an illegal refining site at Dariama village in Rivers state. Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, said the site was destroyed by the air component of operation Delta Safe. The publication said the airstrike on the illegal refinery was intelligence-driven, adding that the site is located at Dariama village, which is about 20 kilometres south-west of Abonnema. According to an intelligence source who spoke with Makama, the artisanal refinery was said to have tanks and reservoirs filled with suspected illicit refined products. The source added that the airstrike demonstrates the commitment of the air force to eliminate activities of oil thieves and illegal oil bunkers. In May, about 41 illegal refining sites were destroyed by troops of operation Delta Safe in Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers states.

Illegal Arm: Emefiele To Be Arraigned July 25

A Federal High Court in Lagos has fixed July 25 for the arraignment of the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, over alleged unlawful possession of firearms. The date was fixed by Justice Nicholas Oweibo after controversy in the delay by the State Security Service (SSS) to bring the charges in line with various orders of courts. The SSS had on July 13 filed a two-count charge against Emefiele over illegal possession of arms. In the charges filed before the court, the SSS accused Emefiele of being found in possession of one single-barrel shotgun (JOJEFF Magnum 8371) without licence. He was also alleged to be in possession of 123 rounds of live ammunition (cartridges) without a licence. Both charges are said to be in contravention of sections 4 and 8 of the Firearms Act Cap F28 Laws of the Federation, 2004, punishable under section 27 (1)(b)(i) of the Act. In protesting over the non-compliance with the orders of high courts in Abuja, some group of lawyers on July 17 filed a contempt proceeding before a Federal High Court in Abuja to commit the director-general of the SSS, Yusuf Bichi to jail on allegations of contempt of court. The lawyers, led by Maxwell Opara and Ahmed Tijani on Monday accused Bichi of disobeying different orders of M. A. Hassan, Hamza Muazu and Bello Kawu were disobeyed by the service despite the orders being served on them.

Akeredolu’s wife shares photo of husband in medical facility on birthday

Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, wife of the governor of Ondo, has shared the photograph of her husband in a medical facility amid death rumours. Betty posted the picture on Friday across her social media handles. The picture shows the ailing governor sitting on a motorable chair while his wife posed beside him. The background of the picture shows the picture may have been taken in a medical facility. “Aketi dey kampe!. Victory for us!” Betty captioned the picture. Coincidentally, today is the 67th birthday of the Ondo governor, who was born on July 21, 1956. Earlier, Akeredolu posted a picture on his Twitter handle to celebrate his 67th birthday. “Which of the Favour of the Lord can I deny? Chapter 67. To God be the Laud, Honour and Glory!!!” the Ondo governor tweeted. Over the past few weeks, the health status of Akeredolu has been making the headlines. Akeredolu had embarked on a 21-day leave on June 7 and was expected to return on July 6. The governor had directed Lucky Aiyedatiwa, his deputy, to act in his stead. However, Akeredolu wrote to the state house of assembly, extending his medical leave when he did not resume work at the initial date of resumption. Meanwhile, Abdullahi Adamu, the former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), stirred another controversy when he said Akeredolu was hospitalised and in a state of “extreme incapacity”. The Ondo government had countered Adamu and assured residents of the state that the governor will resume duties soon.

Tinubu’s Reference To Anarchy, Extremely Dangerous, Too Low – Obi

Presidential Candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has submitted that President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima’s reference to “anarchy” against the legal decision of their petition is dangerous and low. Obi and LP’s submission is contained in the final written addresses in reply to the copies earlier filed by Tinubu and Shettima before the Presidential Election Petitions Court. Tinubu and Shettima had also stated in reaction to not scoring 25 percent in the FCT that it is not the position of the law, maintaining that “any other interpretation different from this will lead to absurdity, chaos, anarchy and alteration of the very intention of the legislature.” In the 42-page address signed by the lead counsel to Obi and LP, Livi Uzoukwu (SAN), pointed out that Tinubu and Shettima “went too low and abandoned discretion when they claimed as follows: ‘Our submission is that the petitioners are inviting anarchy by their ventilation of this issue of non-transmission of results electronically, by INEC.’ Obi and LP said, “This is a cheap, misguided, and destructive blackmail clearly intended to target the country’s judicialism and constitutionalism. It also aims at cannibalizing our democracy. “It will also raise the issue of insecurity if the petitioners emulate the bad example of the 2nd-3rd respondents (Tinubu and Shettima). However, that will never happen. When has it become offensive for petitioners to canvass a ground prescribed for the challenge of an election in Section 134(1)(b) of the Electoral Act 2022? Desperation taken too far can be extremely dangerous. Let the 2nd-3rd Respondents know that where the rule of law is trampled upon or truncated, anarchy reigns supreme.”
