According to a local, the attackers were said to have ridden on motorcycles, stormed the Igba Ukyor community and shot sporadically killing five people. The local who did not want to be mentioned said that the gunmen later moved to a nearby community where they killed one person. “As a result of the invasion, some of the villagers ran into the bush last night for fear of being attacked. They only returned this morning from their hiding,” the local said. Nigeria’s inflation rate rises to 22.79% amid high food prices

The consumer price index (CPI), which measures the rate of change in prices of goods and services, rose to 22.79 percent in June 2023, up from 22.41 percent in the previous month. The latest figure is the sixth consecutive rise in the country’s inflation rate this year. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) made this known in its CPI report for June 2023, released on Monday. “In June 2023, the Headline inflation rate rose to 22.79% relative to May 2023 headline inflation rate which was 22.41%,” the report reads. “Looking at the movement, the June 2023 Headline inflation rate showed an increase of 0.38% points when compared to May 2023 headline inflation rate. “On a year-on-year basis, the Headline inflation rate was 4.19% points higher compared to the rate recorded in June 2022, which was 18.60%. This shows that the Headline inflation rate (year-on-year basis) increased in June 2023 when compared to the same month in the preceding year (i.e., June 2022). “On a month-on-month basis, the Headline inflation rate in June 2023 was 2.13%, this was 0.19% points higher than the rate recorded in May 2023 (1.94%). IG withdraws mobile policemen from ex-govs, ministers, VIPs

The Federal Government has withdrawn the Mobile Police Force personnel attached to several Very Important Persons, including ex-governors, former ministers and lawmakers. The order, which was contained in a police wireless message from Mopol 45 Force Headquarters, Abuja, affected Daura Buhari, brother to former President Muhammadu Buhari as well as former First Lady, Aisha Buhari’s sibling and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha. The development came a few weeks after the IG vowed to withdraw Police Mobile Force personnel from VIP escort and guard duties. He had also announced plans to establish the Special Intervention Squad, which according to him, would have 40,000 highly trained police officers including selected officers from the Police Mobile Force. This, the IG said, was to allow the police to take back its place in the “internal security architecture” of the country. Egbetokun, who spoke during a meeting with Squadron leaders and Tactical Commanders in Abuja, on June 26, stated, “We shall effect the withdrawal of PMF personnel from VIP escort/guard duties. While the protection of dignitaries remains paramount, it is imperative that we realign our priorities to address the escalating security challenges faced by the nation as a whole. By relieving the PMF of VIP escort and guard duties, we can redirect their focus and efforts toward addressing critical security concerns that affect our communities at large. “In a bid to kick-start the process of regaining our pride of place in the internal security architecture of our dear country first and foremost, modalities for the creation of a new special squad – the Special Intervention Squad have been initiated. “This special squad shall consist of 40,000 specially trained elite officers. The Squad will be formed by selecting officers from the pool of existing Police Mobile Force personnel and all tactical units in the country. “These officers will undergo intensive pre-deployment training to make them combat-ready for frontline operational duties in all the states of the Federation, with a particular focus on areas plagued with unrest and turmoil. “By pooling together the expertise and experience of our PMF personnel and other tactical units, we can establish a formidable force that is well-equipped to handle the evolving challenges we face.” Egbetokun set up a committee headed by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Operations), Adeleke Bode, to assess and advise on how the new policies could be implemented seamlessly. The committee submitted The PUNCH reports that thousands of police operatives were attached to public officials, ex-political officer holders, businessmen and other private individuals, thus reducing the number of police personnel required to protect the public while fewer officers were available for core police duties like investigations and patrols. Though previous IGs had withdrawn the police orderlies deployed to protect some politicians in the past, the cops found their way back to the VIPs. Statutorily, only the president, vice president, governors, local council chairmen, legislative principal officers in the states and at federal level, magistrates and judges are entitled to police protection. But this privilege has over the years been extended to just about anybody who can pay, leaving ever fewer personnel for real police work. However, the Force headquarters in its order with reference CB: 4001/DOPS/45PMF/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.15/353 signed by the AIG MOPOL, directed the addressees to implement the directive with immediate effect. The message was addressed to DSPs Lauretta Iruonagbe; Yusuf Ishaq; Okeme Emmanuel; Ilesanmi Temidayo; Emmanuel Akaniro; Yakubu Francis; Chindo Atege; Zakari Mohammed and ASPs Osori Sani; Job Andrew; Iyabo Oluwadamilola, and Yakubu Anthony who are believed to be attached to some of the affected dignitaries. VIPs affected by the withdrawal order include former governors of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim and Rochas Okorocha; former governor of Bauchi, Adamu Muazu; ex- Gombe State governor, Danjuma Goje and former governors of Ogun and Zamfara, Gbenga Daniel and Bello Matawalle, respectively. governors of Ogun and Zamfara, Gbenga Daniel and Bello Matawalle, respectively. KAMAL USMAN: The Physically Challenged Who Writes With His Mouth

The 21-year old Kamal Usman recently become a media sensation across Nigeria after a trending viral video of him appeared on the social media writing with his mouth, and to put up piece and pieces of every story around him, ASHENEWS reports. ASHENEWS met with Usman Ibrahim, Kamal’s father, who said his family migrated to Kagara town in 2020 following incessant bandit attacks on Uregi village (where they hail) in Rafi local government area of Niger state, where Kamal had earlier completed his primary school education prior to their migration. A few weeks in Kagara town, Kamal pressured his parents to enroll him for secondary education, and eventually got admitted into the Salihu Tanko Day Secondary School, Kagara. Though he lost an academic year to his family’s sudden displacement, Kamal, undeterred, resumed school with a renewed vigor to excel after his enrollment alongside his brother. Through thin and thick, he completed his Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) last week after writing the 2023 junior West African School Certificate Examination (WAEC), commonly known as Junior WAEC. Kamal’s school signpost How it happened As soon as they settled in Kagara, Kamal’s first request, according to his father, was to return to school. “I told Kamal that he needed to drop the idea of going to school because we were now living off other people. He begged me to allow him to go even if I didn’t believe he could succeed. His insistence got me and I thought I trust in God and allow him to go,” the father said. Kamal told ASHENEWS that although he could not contain his happiness on the very day he would be enrolled in a secondary school, his happiness was short-lived because of the thought that he could not write. “I became confused when on the first day, I sat in the classroom for my first lesson in school. I looked round the classroom and saw that I was the only abnormal student; every student was using his hands to take notes, except I,” he told ASHENEWS while revealing that, that was “my first challenge being a person with disability.” According to his father, Kamal was born in that condition where he couldn’t use his legs and hands for anything, “and in that situation, he was enrolled in the primary school at age seven.” And Kamal interjected “But I could only go to school on the back of my friends or siblings.” Kamal said in the primary school, he became thoughtful of how he could use other parts of his body to write. “The thought of using my mouth crossed my mind, and I beat the challenge by learning to write with it,” thereby daring his disability, and exceptionally learning and becoming good at using his mouth to write. Kamal has deep enthusiasm for education despite his limitations, the top of which is his physical disability, which has made him to rely on assistance from others, including to eat. His fascination for education has stolen the hearts of many, and propelled by his unwavering devotion to succeed, Kamal, with the assistance of the management of the Salihu Tanko Day Secondary School, is defying all odds to change his life for the better. “I cannot go on the street to beg like other young people, if only I will get support to read and become useful to myself, parents, and the society,” he asserts. As the only student with a prominent disability in the school, Kamal’s insight has endeared him to his teachers and classmates. “When I first saw him, I was a bit skeptical that he might not cope but when we put him to test, and realized that he could do most of the things his mates can do and even better. He is doing so well that we didn’t even need to do certain things differently for him,” Alhassan Shakrudeen, Kamal’s class teacher and the school’s assistant examiner, told ASHENEWS. “Kamal Usman shows that there is ability in disability. The things he does, most of those with hands and legs can’t do. His school achievement is excellent. He can look at the chalkboard once, read three lines, and write them down,” Alhassan added. The third of nine children from the family, Kamal has refused to use his disability as an excuse, but has instead chosen to glide on this seeming shortcoming to change his life. “When I look at my classmates, I never feel inadequate because I know that when it comes to studying, there is hardly anyone who can beat me at it. The only difference is that I can’t run on my two feet,” he says jokingly. Kamal’s ambition is to be a lawyer in the future, a goal he is certain that with support he can achieve. According to him, his interest in law is linked to a burning desire to speak for the downtrodden. “I want to help the weak. There are times when people get prosecuted and I am left thinking about what I would have done differently if I was the judge,” he says. For Kamal, education is not only the way of fulfilling his ambitions but also his way out of poverty and destitution. “I know my father’s condition. He is a helpless old man. The only thing I want is an opportunity to continue my education. I have since realized that this is the only way I can have a better future,” Kamal further told ASHENEWS. “Why I encouraged Kamal to drop out of school – Father” But Kamal’s 50-year-old father, Usman Ibrahim was a farmer before armed bandits forced him and other farmers from Uregi. All Ibrahim was struggling for his son, was to be able to walk and have hands. Education, according to him, was not one of his wishes for Kamal. “When Kamal was born, I had nothing. I came to the local government secretariat for help and they gave me N30,000. What I wanted at that time was for him to be

Enugu Lawmaker Shot Dead

An Enugu State lawmaker, Nelson Sylvester has been shot dead by suspected assassins. Mr. Sylvester who’s popularly known as Ofunwa, represented Eha-Ulo ward, in Nsukka Local Government Area Legislative Council, until his death. He was killed by gunmen on Sunday night at his residence in Eha-Alumonah. A close friend of the deceased said his death might not be unconnected to the security situation in the village which the late lawmaker was deeply involved in seeking for solution. The friend who wants to remain anonymous said he traveled to the village on Saturday after attending a weeding in Enugu capital. He travelled to the village on the said day to attend a security meeting because of the deteriorating security situation. He revealed that the assailants pursued him to a neighboring village where they followed him into a fence compound and shot him dead. “For more than 12 years, Ofunwa has been involved in maintaining peace in his community. He has been instrumental in disarming so many criminal elements in Eha-Alumonah. “It was the same security meeting that he attended two days ago after we attended a wedding together. Ofunwa told me he called the Elders to come for the meeting because their community is becoming uninhabitable. It was this meeting that he went to and he didn’t come back. “They went to his house, he escaped and they pursued him into another village where he scaled the fence and entered the compound. They came inside there and shot him directly to the chest.

Naira hits new low at N820/$, as forex supply gap persists

At the backdrop of sustained supply gap in Nigeria’s foreign exchange (forex) market, the local currency, Naira, has hit a new low at the weekend, trading N803.9 to a dollar in the Investors & Exporters (I&E) window which is the official forex market and N822/$ in the parallel market. Financial Vanguard’s findings indicated a 6.6 per cent decline in volume of dollars traded in the I&E window as dealers said they were disappointed that the increase in supply they expected last week did not materialize. A week-on-week trend in the parallel market shows a 5.5 percent depreciation to N822/$ as against N779/$ closing rate previous week. In the I&E window, the local currency depreciated 3.9 percent W-o-W to N803.9/$ from N776.9/$ the previous Friday. Financial Vanguard currency monitor shows that after the initial massive depreciation on June 14th, 2023 when the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, introduced reforms in the market, exchange rate had remained volatile with daily fluctuations until the record low was hit last weekend. The reform majorly eliminated multiple exchange rates and reintroduced the ‘Willing Buyer Willing Seller’ market model in the I&E window. Since the new measures were introduced, the Naira has depreciated cumulatively in the I&E window and parallel market by 70 per cent (N321.23) and 7.0 per cent (N58) respectively. Meanwhile last week’s closing rate also indicated that the parallel market margin that narrowed to almost elimination following the new policy has started widening. While the measures announced by CBN was aimed at increasing transparency and boosting confidence in order to attract increased forex supply, forex market operators who spoke to Financial Vanguard said the expected increase in supply is yet to materialize, adding that this, coupled with rising demand, and hoarding, are the factors driving the renewed depreciation of the naira in both segments of the forex market.

Methodist bishops to FG: Establish state police to solve insecurity in south-east

The Council of the Methodist Church of Nigeria Bishops has advised the federal government to establish a state policing system to defeat the insecurity in the south-east geopolitical zone. In a communique issued at the end of its 40th annual council of bishops held at the Wesley Cathedral, in Enugu, the church said it is not oblivious of the government’s effort to quell the violent crises across the country. The council charged the three tiers of government to find a lasting solution to the insecurity in the south-east. “We call on the governments at the centre to be more proactive in handling the issue,” the bishops said. “Consequently, the council enjoins the government to look into the idea of the formation of state police so as to reduce the spate of the incessant killings of harmless Nigerians by insurgents, militants and terrorists.” In 2021, former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo had argued that a multi-ethnic nation like Nigeria needs state police to address its security challenges. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) had also met with President Bola Tinubu, in November, while he was candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to present an 11-point demand on issues, including the creation of state police, that can drive development in the country.
