We’re trying to address looming ASUU strike – Presidency

THE Presidency on Wednesday said that the government was making frantic efforts to avert the planned strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.   The Presidency also assured that no indigent students will be denied the government student loan to be launched in the next three weeks. Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila disclosed the above when he received in his office, at the state House a delegation of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, led by its President, Lucky Emonefe. Gbajabiamila called on Nigerian students to speak up against voices condemning the Student Loan Funds policies saying the scheme is to ensure no student irrespective of their birth circumstances is deprived of quality education. The Chief of Staff further assured the students that the government is ready to avert any looming industrial action by members of ASUU, explaining that government is currently addressing issues that concern the union. He added that President Tinubu had through several directives declared an end to the strike by the academic unions in universities and higher institutions. According to him, “There may be another looming ASUU strike, and we are trying to address that, we are looking at issues that concern ASUU, the impending strike and I believe we should be able to avert that as you have said earlier. “We can always do our best to avert strikes such as this. Luckily, we have a President who is more than anybody determined that the days of strike are over and left behind. We are hoping to be able to avert the strikes”, he added. The Chief of Staff affirmed the determination of President Bola Tinubu towards the successful take-off of the scheme adding that the program would be launched within the next few weeks. According to him, “Mr President is determined that we see it through and see it through successfully. It was supposed to be launched in January but it is anything worth doing and it is worth doing well. “We are hoping it will be launched in the next two to three weeks, we are trying to dot the I(s) and cross the T(s) before it is launched to ensure we have policies that cannot be faulted.” He added that the student loan scheme, when successfully launched, will become part of the legacies of the present administration. Gbajabiamila solicited the support of Nigerians to ensure that no indigent student, who is genuinely in need of the loan, is left behind. “Now we are going to need you in the success of this policy because, generally, it is a well-received policy but there may be one or two segments of the society for the reason some people in some quarters may be kicking against it, this policy is for the Nigerian student, it is to make sure that no student is left behind when it comes to education. “It is to make sure people are not deprived of their education just because of circumstances of their birth that itself is unconstitutional. “Now that the child of indigent should not be deprived of what should be a right, not to make education a privilege but a right. “So when voices speak up against it we expect you to rise for support, this is something that you all support, embrace and work towards its success”, he said. The Chief of Staff also applauded youth representation on the Federal Executive Council saying the government is working on the establishment of a Youth Advisory Council that would advise the President on youth matters and other injunctions towards youth development. “You have among you two comrades standing in for you in the cabinet, We are muling the idea that has not come to fruition yet I hope it will come to fruition, we are working assiduously on the Youth Advisory council that will sit from time to time and advise the President on youth matters and other matters that are geared towards youth development. We are hopeful that will come to fruition soon”

60 Reps propose change from presidential to parliamentary system

Sixty House of Representatives members on Wednesday proposed a bill to amend the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria and return the country to a parliamentary system as a replacement for the current presidential system. Wale Raji, a lawmaker from Lagos State in the All Progressives Congress, was a prominent sponsor of the bill, which was read for the first time in the House of Representatives. The lawmakers cited the need to reduce government costs as well as robust policy debates as reasons for demanding a return to the parliamentary system. One of the most significant differences between these two systems is that in a presidential system, the president is directly elected by the people, whereas in a parliamentary system, the legislature is supreme and elects a prime minister from among its members as the head of government.   There is also no clear separation of powers between the legislature and the executive because ministers are also appointed by parliament. The bill, if passed, will however require the assent of the president to become law and be enshrined in the Constitution. If the president declines to assent, the National Assembly can override his veto with the votes of two-thirds of the members. Details soon…

BREAKING: FG Can’t Continue To Pay Electricity Bill — Power Minister

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, says Nigeria cannot continue to subsidise electricity, adding that the nation must begin to move towards a cost-effective tariff model, as the country is currently indebted to the tune of 1.3 trillion naira to generating companies (GenCos) and 1.3 billion dollars owed gas companies Adelabu, addressed a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, said only 450 billion naira was budgeted for subsidy this year but the ministry needs over 2 trillion naira for subsidy. He said state governments will now be allowed to generate power independently to supply power to their states. On the grid that has collapsed for about six times between December 2023 and now, he said this was caused by shortage of gas, ageing machines in the grid value chain, low capacity to evacuate generated power, and destruction of power stations in some parts of the North-East geopolitical zone of the country. He said the Transmission Company of Nigeria has over 100 abandoned projects due to variations on contract figures as a result of the fluctuations of the forex, hence the company will not award any new contracts till all such projects are completed. The minister also said over 50 billion naira has been earmarked in the 2024 budget to build mini grids to supply power to remote areas. He said electricity distribution companies (DisCos) should sit up otherwise anyone found wanting will have his licence withdrawn. The minister also said he has reached out to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu to help provide security for power infrastructure.

BREAKING: Labour Patty crisis deepens as party suspends treasurer, Okpara, for six months

The National Working Committee of the Labour Party has slammed a six-month suspension on its National Treasurer, Oluchi Opara. The suspension was announced at a press conference on Wednesday at the party secretariat in Abuja. Opara had, on Monday, challenged LP National Chairman, Julius Abure, at a press conference to account for an alleged N3.5 billion raised from the sale of nomination forms and fundraising activities in the build-up to the 2023 general election. While speaking on Arise TV’s ‘Good Morning Show’ on Tuesday, Opara again claimed the Abure-led NWC is working hand-in-hand with the Edo State Government which is governed by the opposition – the Peoples Democratic Party. Reacting to her allegations on Wednesday, the National Publicity Secretary of LP, Obiora Ifoh, described Opara as a mole who was being used by dissidents in the party. The spokesman told journalists that the decision to sanction her was taken after she failed to honour an invitation by the party’s NWC to resolve the conflict. He said, “After the 2023 general election, Labour Party was marked for total annihilation by the system for daring to upstage the status quo of the political class. Little did we know that the fumigation was far from complete until late last year when signs emanated that our National Treasurer, Ms. Oluchi Opara, a key member of the executive, turned out to be a mole in the house and has continued networking with the expelled members of the party leadership. “Convinced that the treasurer is on a mission to stifle life out of our very cherished party, an emergency NWC was summoned on February 13. Arising from the meeting, the NWC set up a disciplinary committee to try Opara for bringing the party to disrepute. “To exercise its powers as contained in the party’s Constitution with the intention of a fair hearing, the NWC extended an invitation to her to appear before it today, February 14 by 10 a.m. to discuss the development. The party regrets that the treasurer shunned the invitation by the disciplinary committee to clear herself. “We see this as an affront to the party leadership and millions of our members who are watching how their party’s image which they have laboured hard to build is trolled by one ingrate. “The disciplinary committee has, however, recommended to the National Executive Council of the party through the NWC that Ms. Oluchi Opara be suspended from Labour Party for a minimum of six months. This suspension is with immediate effect.” The statement added that “we sincerely regret this development. We, however, urge our teeming members to understand that this is a price to pay for success. We will continue to reform the party until we achieve the best, good enough to drive our New Nigeria agenda.”

Ghana’s president sacks finance minister in major cabinet reshuffle

Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo has announced a reshuffle of his cabinet — a move that has affected over 20 ministers. Ken Ofori-Atta, minister of finance, was among those replaced, according to a statement released on Wednesday by the communications directorate of Accra’s Jubilee House, Ghana’s presidential palace. Ofori-Atta’s sack comes amid criticisms of the ex-banker’s leadership during the country’s worst economic crisis in a decade. A 2023 World Bank report showed that a combination of domestic imbalances and external shocks in the previous year led to macroeconomic challenges in Ghana. The year was marked by currency depreciation, spiralling inflation, and tumbling investor confidence. According to the report, pre-existing fiscal vulnerabilities such as mounting debt burden, a rigid budget weakened by high energy sector costs and chronically low public revenues, were deepened by difficult global economic conditions which led the country into a “full-blown crisis”. In July 2022, Ghana’s central bank posted a record loss of 60.8 billion cedi, mostly due to debt restructuring. Last year, thousands of Ghanaians took to the streets to protest the regressing economy and demanded the removal of Ernest Addison, the central bank governor. OTHER MINISTRIES AFFECTED Ofori-Atta would be replaced by Mohammed Adam, current minister of state at the finance ministry, and previously deputy energy minister responsible for the petroleum sector. Other ministries whose heads were sacked include health; environment, science, technology and innovation; gender, children and social protection; and tourism, arts and culture. Deputy ministers of states were also sacked. “President Akufo-Addo is hopeful that Parliament will, once again, on a bi-partisan basis, expedite the approval of his nominees, so they can join the Government forthwith, and assist in the delivery of his mandate for his second term in office,” the statement added. Akufo-Addo will be stepping down next year when his constitutionally permissible two-term limit elapses. The country’s general election is slated for December 2024.
