UK varsity stops courses, asks Nigerian students to leave country for not paying tuition fees

A group of Nigerian students have been thrown off university courses and ordered to leave the United Kingdom after they struggled to pay tuition fees on time, BBC reports. The Teesside University students have said the devaluation of the naira has made it difficult for them to pay their tuition fees, leading to a breach of visa sponsorship requirements. Teesside University As a result, some students have been blocked from their studies, reported to the Home Office, and ordered to leave the UK. The university claims it has no choice but to take this action, citing strict external regulations. Affected students have expressed their distress and disappointment, feeling that the university is being “heartless” and not providing adequate support. The group of 60 students, who chose to share their names with the BBC, banded together to urge the university to offer support after several of their peers faced severe consequences for defaulting on payments. These students were abruptly locked out of their university accounts and forcibly withdrawn from their courses. Adenike Ibrahim, a student who was close to graduating, had her visa revoked and was told to leave the country, despite having paid 90% of her tuition fees. Adenike Ibrahim “I did default [on payments], but I’d already paid 90% of my tuition fees and I went to all of my classes,” she told BBC. “I called them and asked to reach an agreement, but they do not care what happens to their students. “It has been heartbreaking for my son especially, he has been in so much distress since I told him,” Ibrahim added. Esther Obigwe, another affected student, has been struggling with depression due to the situation. Esther Obigwe She claims she repeatedly tried to speak to the university about her financial struggles but received no response until she was blocked from her studies and received notice to leave the country. Obigwe said, “I attended all of my classes and seminars, I’m a hell of an active student. “It is disheartening, I am now on antidepressants and being here alone, I have nobody to talk to. “For over two months, I’ve barely eaten or slept and I don’t understand why this is being meted at us, we didn’t do anything wrong.” Jude Salubi, a student pursuing a degree in social work, was suddenly informed that his access to the university would be suspended and that he would be required to leave the country, despite being in the middle of a critical placement. Jude Salubri Salubi said he commuted from Teesside to Liverpool every weekend, working 18 hours to try to settle his outstanding fees “As of now I have paid £14,000 and have a balance of £14,000. “I am willing to come to an agreement as to how I will make this payment, but I need guarantees that I will be re-enrolled into school and my visa restored,” he said. A university spokesman said, “Teesside University is proud to be a global institution with a diverse student population but is also very aware of its obligations regarding visa issuance and compliance. “These strict external regulations ensure that the university fully supports a robust immigration system and is outside of the university’s control.” The spokesman acknowledged that the university is aware of the financial struggles faced by some students and has proactively offered customised payment plans to those who have requested them. “This option has been taken up by many of our international students; however, some students have still defaulted on these revised payment plans,” he said. The Home Office clarified that the decision to grant or withdraw visa sponsorship lies with the sponsoring institution In cases where a visa is shortened or cancelled, individuals are advised to either regularise their stay or make arrangements to depart the UK, a spokesman told BBC.

Report: Without any charge, DSS arrested, kept Ebonyi lawyer in custody since 2021

The Department of State Services (DSS) has refused to either release Piu Awoke, an Ebonyi-based lawyer who was indiscriminately arrested by the agency in 2021, or charge him in court. A source who is familiar with the matter but does not want to be named told FIJ that Awoke was arrested by the DSS while he was travelling from Ebonyi to Abuja over a case at the Federal High Court. He also said that the DSS has deliberately denied everyone access to him, including his professional colleagues, since his arrest. “Awoke was travelling from Ebonyi to Abuja when officials of the DSS stopped his commercial vehicle and arrested him. They arrested all the men who were on the bus, including him, thinking they were of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) sect,” the source told FIJ. “No one said anything to us for a long time; then later, they said he was being held for terrorism. But even this was a rumour; we had no official statement about the charge against him from the DSS, as lawyers and relatives were barred from interfacing with it.” The source also said that at some point, he heard that the court had mandated the DSS to present Awoke before a judge but the agency refused. “At the earlier stage, someone went to court demanding Awoke’s release from the DSS,” the source said. “The court ordered the DSS to charge him within a month, but, normally, they refused, and they have failed to obey up to this day. It seems the court is scared of the State Security Service, as it couldn’t prevail over them to do what is right. “We have written to the National Assembly of Nigeria (NASS) and the House committee on public petition, but all to no avail.” When FIJ asked if Awoke was handling a case that might have made him a target of the DSS or committed a crime, the source said, “He is a vibrant human rights lawyer, and even if he has committed any crime, the constitution requires that he should be charged within 24 hours, at most 48. “If a lawyer can be detained without trial for three years, then no one is safe.” Also, in a petition written by Chigozie Nwankwo, chairman of the Abakaliki branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), to the national president on May 9 and sighted by FIJ, he said Awoke was one of the lawyers to appear in a case involving Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He also said Awoke is now being held by the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) and is detained in their facility in Minna, Niger State. “The information available to me is that our learned colleague was among the lawyers who were briefed to appear in a matter involving the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB, at the Federal High Court, Abuja, which came up on the 26th July, 2021,” the petition read in part. “I have been reliably informed that our learned colleague has been handed over to the office and men of the National Security Adviser (NSA) and he is currently being detained at their facility in Minna, Niger State. He has been denied access to his family and friends since his detention on 26th July, 2021. It is in view of the foregoing that I seek your kind intervention for the release or arraignment/trial of our dear member.” FIJ’s phone calls to Peter Afunnaya, the spokesperson of the DSS, on Tuesday afternoon were not answered. A text message sent to him for comments on Awoke’s arrest and whereabouts was also not responded to. Credit: FIJ

Nigerian govt bans money ritual movies

Dr Shaibu Husseini, Executive Director/CEO of National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), says the Federal Government has approved the prohibition of money rituals and glamourising of vices in Nigerian films. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Husseini disclosed this at a National Stakeholders Engagement on Smoke-Free Nollywood held in Enugu on Wednesday. The event was organised by the NFVCB and Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA). Movie producers, directors and actors drawn from different parts of the country, as well as leaders of various guilds and associations in the Nigerian film industry were present at the event. Husseini said that today, we are facing an industry emergency requiring bold and ambitious actions from all parents, guardians and stakeholders. When my predecessor approached the former Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Muhammed on the need to make a subsidiary legislation to curtail the display of smoking in Nigerian movies, he saw the need to include money rituals. “Others included in the regulation are ritual killings and glamourising other crimes in order to further sanitise the film industry. ADVERTISEMENT Amazing Cool Gadgets “Today, I am delighted to announce to you that the Minister of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, pursuant to section 65 of the NFVCB Act 2004 has approved the regulation. “The minister has approved the Prohibition of Money Ritual, Ritual Killing, Tobacco, Tobacco Products, Nicotine Product Promotion and Glamorisation display in Movies, Musical Videos and Skits” Regulations 2024.” “We have also forwarded the approved copy to the Federal Ministry of Justice for Gazette,” he said. Husseini said the sensitisation programme was to educate stakeholders on the danger inherent in consummation of smoking in Nigerian movies. According to him, besides the health implications, glamourising smoking in films poses a negative influence on teens and young adults who constitute the largest segment of Nigeria movie viewers. He said that the board was set to undertake detailed enlightenment programmes in secondary schools, tertiary institutions, local communities, faith groups and other institutions. As you all know, the film industry occupies a central position in the entertainment and creative sector, and it is imperative that we continue to place the highest premium on the progress of the film industry. “The NFVCB supports smoke-free movies and supports smoke-free Nollywood, and we therefore seek your collaboration to develop creative content that discourages smoking and promotes positive health messages. “After series of engagements, the NFVCB in collaboration with the CAPPA decided to do a ‘subsidiary regulations’ to cater for smoking in movies since this aspect was not expressly spelt out in the extant Law. “The NFVCB is well prepared to take leadership in this regard and has planned and began implementing innovative ways to achieve its mandate,” he said NAN reports that it is the duty of the Board to register all films and videos outlets across the country, and to keep a register of such registered outlets among other functions. Teacher Bags 15 Years Imprisonment For Raping Minor In 1999

An Ekiti State High Court has sentenced 45-year-old Alabi Oluwafemi to 15 years imprisonment for raping an eight-year-old minor in 1999. According to the charge, Oluwafemi sometime in 1999 at Ikere Ekiti, did rape an eight-year-old girl. The victim, in his testimony, said: “The defendant was my teacher and our neighbour. He touched my breast each time he came to teach me at home, I did not understand anything about what he was doing until he raped me in our sitting room when my mother travelled to Lagos and left me and my sister at home. “He removed my cloth and used it to clean the blood and sperm and threw it away, I later ran to our neighbours weeping, they thought I was missing my mother but I did not tell them what happened. “Thereafter, I dropped out of school because I could no longer concentrate on my studies. I was afraid anytime I saw him in the class. He came across me on Facebook sometime in the year 2012, he sent me a friend request and I declined. “In the year 2023 again, he started disturbing me, I reported the matter to the law enforcement agents, and I was advised to ignore him. Thereafter, he started sending disturbing and annoying videos and messages to me, referring to the past ugly incident. When I could no longer bear it, I decided to take legal action against him.” To prove his case, the prosecutor, Kunle-Shina Adeyemi, called two witnesses and tendered a confessional statement of the defendant, a flash drive of the defendant’s conversations with the nominal complainant, a petition and printout from screenshots of chats among others as exhibits. In his judgment, Justice Lekan Ogunmoye said the sexual intercourse with the victim could not have been consensual. She, as an eight-year-old girl, was a minor and could not consent to sexual intercourse. This issue is resolved in favour of the prosecution and the defendant is found guilty as charged, Ogunmoye said.

Ireland, Norway, Spain to recognise Palestine as independent state

The leaders of Norway, Ireland, and Spain have announced that their countries will formally recognise Palestine as an independent state in the interest of “peace in the Middle East”. Jonas Store, Norway’s prime minister, said a two-state solution was also in Israel’s best interest. Store, who spoke on Wednesday, added that Norway’s formal recognition of Palestine as a state will be made on May 28. “There cannot be peace in the Middle East if there is no recognition,” the prime minister said. “In the midst of a war, with tens of thousands killed and injured [in Gaza], we must keep alive the only alternative that offers a political solution for Israelis and Palestinians alike — two states, living side by side, in peace and security.” Pedro Sanchez, Spain’s prime minister, also slated May 28 as the date when the country’s council of ministers would recognise an independent Palestinian state. Sanchez accused Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, of putting the two-state solution in “danger” with his policy of “pain and destruction” in Gaza, adding that Spain’s recognition is a decision “for peace, for justice and for coherence”. “Spain will be accompanied by other European countries,” he said. “The more there are of us, the sooner we will achieve a ceasefire. We are not going to give up. Recognition is not just the end, it’s just the beginning. “This recognition is not an attack on anyone, nor a recognition against the Jewish people, nor is it in favour of Hamas.” Shortly after Norway’s announcement, Ireland’s Prime Minister Simon Harris said his country would also recognise a Palestinian state, but did not specify when. “Today, Ireland, Norway, and Spain are announcing that we recognise the state of Palestine,” Harris said at a news conference. “Each of us will now undertake whatever national steps are necessary to give effect to that decision.” Harris said he is confident other countries will take similar decisions in the coming weeks and called it “a historic and important day for Ireland and for Palestine”. Malta and Slovenia are reportedly expected to make similar announcements.   ‘ISRAEL WILL NOT LET THIS GO QUIETLY’ After the announcements, Israel immediately recalled its ambassadors in the European countries. “I am sending an unequivocal message to Ireland and Norway — Israel will not let this go quietly,” Israel Katz, the foreign minister, said. “Ireland and Norway intend to send a message to the Palestinians and the entire world — terror pays.   “The twisted step by these states is an affront to the victims of October 7. It also harms efforts to bring back the 128 hostages.” Katz said the decision makes peace less likely and undermines Israel’s right to self-defense, adding that the “parade of stupidity” would not deter the Jewish nation from achieving its goals of toppling Hamas and bringing back the hostages.

ISWAP Kills Police DPO In Borno

The Divisional Police Officer of New Marte in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State has been killed by members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP).   It was gathered that the DPO, a Superintendent of Police, was killed on Monday night while defending the police station at the resettled community from the terrorists who sneaked into the community on foot in the middle of the night. Confirming the death on Wednesday, the spokesman for the Borno State Police Command, Nahun Kenneth, said the Command is still gathering details of the attack. However, a military personnel serving in New Marte told Channels TV that the terrorists targeted one of the residents of the community who got hint and ran to the police station for protection. The military personnel said the terrorists got into the town on foot without their usual motorcycles and vehicles. New Marte is 93 kilometers from Maiduguri at the fringes of the Lake Chad region. It is a resettled community which was initially overrun by the terrorists but was rebuilt by Professor Babagana Zulum administration. ISWAP and rival group Boko Haram still launch sporadic ambushes on convoys from their hideouts and plant landmines along the highway. In January, 17 people were killed along the highway in two separate mine blasts that were blamed on jihadists. Ten more people were killed by a landmine in April. Nigeria’s grinding conflict has killed 40,000 and displaced around two million from their homes in the northeast since 2009. The violence has spilled over into neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon. The recent military coups in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso and subsequent withdrawal of French and US troops from the Sahel to Nigeria’s north have heightened concerns over regional instability and violence extending further into coastal West African states.
