Edo assembly suspends three lawmakers for ‘plotting to impeach speaker’

The Edo state house of assembly has suspended three lawmakers over an alleged plot to impeach the speaker and other principal officers. Blessing Agbebaku, speaker of the house, announced the suspension of the lawmakers during plenary on Monday. The suspended lawmakers are Donald Okogbe (PDP Akoko-Edo 11), Bright Iyamu (PDP Orihonmwon south) and Adeh Isibor (PDP Esan north-east 1). The speaker said the lawmakers are being used by some external forces to cause chaos in a bid to remove the leadership of the house. After the speaker announced the suspension, there was a rowdy session in the assembly as the suspended lawmakers questioned the unilateral decision of the speaker. “Mr Speaker, you don’t have the right to unilaterally suspend any member of the house. You must call for votes. Allow members to vote on the matter,” the lawmakers were quoted as saying by NAN. Afterwards, the speaker abruptly adjourned plenary. In April, the assembly impeached Philip Shaibu as the deputy governor after the report of a seven-member investigative panel was adopted. The panel was set up by Daniel Okungbowa, chief judge of Edo, and was headed by S. A. Omonuwa, a retired justice. Shaibu was accused of “misconduct, perjury, and disclosure of government secrets”. Subsequently, Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo, picked Omobayo Godwins as his deputy.

Nigerian Prof Rose-Margaret Ekeng-Itua emerges world’s first black woman Ph.D holder in Cybernetics

Nigerian female scholar, Professor Rose-Margaret Ekeng-Itua, has become the first black woman to earn a doctorate degree (Ph.D) in Cybernetics in the world. Cybernetics is the scientific study of how information is communicated in machines and pieces of electronic equipment in comparison with how information is communicated in the brain and nervous system.   Ekeng-Itua is a pioneer educator, administrator and engineer championing leading roles in Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) challenges in Africa, and paving the way for the African youth, especially girls. She earned the premiering degree from the University of Reading in the United Kingdom under the supervision of her first Ph.D supervisor Prof. Kevin Warwick and the first human Cyborg in the world. Rose-Margaret Ekeng-Itua is a multi-award-winning professor of engineering with over 20 years of experience in Engineering and STEM Education cutting across the USA, Europe and Africa, leading the creation of innovative programmes in STEM, whose fascination with technology took root in her childhood in Nigeria. Surrounded by a culture that often-discouraged girls from pursuing scientific fields, she found her passion in understanding how things worked and the potential for innovation. Her thirst for knowledge led her to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, followed by a master’s degree in Mobile and Satellite Communications Engineering in the United Kingdom. Driven by ambition and a relentless desire to break boundaries, she went on to make history by earning her doctorate in Cybernetics. Despite facing extra-layered challenges as a woman of color in a male-dominated field, gender biases and a lack of readily available role models, she refused to let these obstacles define her. Speaking about challenges encountered in achieving success in a recent interview, Ekeng-Itua said, “Every challenge became fuel for my determination. I realised that my success would not only open doors for myself but would serve as an example for other women and girls who might otherwise doubt their capabilities.”   “I am a Dreamer-Doer-Thinker, so I always had dreams, but my dreams were not necessarily focused on being ‘great’, but more on how I could be a positive change agent, and how to create initiatives, programs and technologies that will impact the world positively. I am human-centric in my approach to making positive change hence, the field of Cybernetics gave me that opportunity as Cybernetics is centered on purposeful design of technologies for society and humans. “This has always been my passion, and pursuing my passion and the dream to disrupt some societal misnomers propelled me to being the first black woman to earn a doctorate degree in Cybernetics. Being the first in anything is always retrospective, for me, the initial focus is always creating positively transformative impact.” The female scholar further said her passion for Mathematics and Physics at an early age informed her choice of career. “I wanted to pursue a career that would give me the opportunity for creativity, innovation, collaboration, and positive impact in communities”, she added. “It was also born from my wish at the age of nine to create platforms that connected the world to foster global unity for progress and appreciative understanding of global cultures. At that young age, I noticed a huge disconnect in what the Global North thought they knew about Africa which I call the Global South.”

One of the villagers, who spoke to newsmen on the condition of anonymity, said that the security operatives razed several houses during the invasion of the community. “Last night, army and police invaded Igga Community and burnt many houses and in the process, one of us, Richard Okoye died. He was running for his life when he fell and died. “They came into the community yesterday (Saturday) at about 10 p.m. and stayed till 12 to 1 a.m burning houses and looting people’s shops. We all ran away and asked our youths not to retaliate”. While informing those with alternatives had fled their homes, the villager added that those still taking refuge in the forests were now living in fear, not knowing whether the attack would continue. Igbos will suffer more if Nigeria fails — Iwuanyanwu

High Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, has explained that the Igbos will suffer more than other tribes in Nigeria if the country fails, calling on Nigerians from the South-East, both home and in the Diaspora, to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration to succeed. Iwuanyanwu stated this when he received the leadership and members of the Igbo Community Assembly in his Abuja home last week. According to him, the Igbos did not vote for President Tinubu during the last general elections because they believed it was the turn of the South-East to lead the country. He added however that following Tinubu’s declaration by both the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the apex court in the country, he deserved to be supported for Nigeria to succeed. He said, “So, as your leader, I have proclaimed that Igbos, as good citizens of Nigeria, will support him. We are going to support him because we want Nigeria to be a success. If Nigeria fails, Igbos are going to suffer more than any tribe.” Continuing, he explained that the Igbos have invested more than other tribes in the country, stating that if Nigeria has a problem, they will be affected more. “If Nigeria is a corporate body like a company, I think we (Igbos) have more investments than many other tribes. Like Abuja for example, the Igbos have a lot of investment here. So if Nigeria has a problem, Igbos are going to suffer. So, if the government fails, Igbos are going to suffer more than any group because Igbos have more investments in most parts of the country than other groups. “I think it is my duty as your leader to say that we are going to give every support we can to help the government to succeed. But we also expect the government to reciprocate the gesture by ensuring that what belongs to us is given to us. Nobody likes a situation where what he has is taken from him. “You all know that the President worked for MKO Abiola and Abiola was my friend. I knew him (Tinubu) that time through Abiola. It is true that we didn’t support him during the election because we believe that it should be an Igbo person. Now we have no reason not to support him and I don’t have anything whatsoever against him. All we require now is to expect him to ensure that what belongs to us and what we have already is not taken away from us,” Iwuanyanwu said.
