331 false fire alarms received in six months – Director

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said its operation was seriously disrupted following a series of false emergency calls in the first half of 2024. This was contained in the statistics of the mid-year activity report, a copy of which was made available to The PUNCH. In the emergency calls log, the Lagos Fire Service Director, Margaret Adeseye, explained that her fire-fighting departments received no fewer than 331 deceitful alarms raised by some mischievous persons. The director said 70 hoax fire alarms were received in February; 60 in April; and 75 in May. She also identified five local government areas where the bulk of the calls came from. They include Igando, Ikotun (28), Eti Osa (16), Ibeju Lekki (12), Kosofe (13) and Ojo (13).   Margaret, who spoke through the Lagos Fire Service Publicity Director, Ololade Agboola, however, explained that not all the calls were malicious. “Yes, we know some mischievous persons just dialed our emergency numbers for fun, especially when they are idle and fiddling with their smartphones. That notwithstanding, we have noted that some of these calls were made with good intent. “Sometimes, we received calls that there was a fire outbreak in an area with no traceable address. In other cases, our firefighters would race to the scene or locate the address only to discover no trace of a fire incident. “Again, some panic-stricken people would place an emergency call over any visible sign of smoke emanating from the neighbourhood. For instance, there was a bank along Oba Akran Road in Ikeja that was said to be on fire. But we found out that what the people thought was a thick smoke emanating from the building was actually a fumigation exercise. “In some instances, the fire may have been put out with the affected people calling us again to tell our officials not to bother coming again when the firefighters are already close to the scene. These are some of the challenges we encounter,” she said. The director appealed to residents of the state to make the agency’s job easier by calling only when there is actual emergency.

You’re playing with fire, Ugandan President warns protesters

Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni, has warned protesters planning an anti-corruption march on Tuesday that they are “playing with fire” and will not be tolerated. BBC reports on Sunday that the protesters, mostly young Ugandans, are demanding an end to corruption in government and have been inspired by recent demonstrations in neighbouring Kenya. Museveni was reported to have accused the protest organisers of working with foreigners to cause chaos in Uganda in a televised address, and warned that the government will not allow disruptions to the country’s progress. “We are busy producing wealth… and you here want to disturb us. You are playing with fire because we cannot allow you to disturb us,” he said.   Police have refused to grant permission for the march, but protest leaders have said they will proceed anyway, citing their constitutional right to peaceful demonstration. “We don’t need police permission to carry out a peaceful demonstration. It is our constitutional right,” one of the main protest leaders, Louez Opolose, told AFP. A protester, Shamim Nambasa, speaking with AFP, said, “Our starting point in the fight against corruption is parliament… and the demonstration is on irrespective of what police is saying.” The march comes amid growing discontent over corruption in Uganda, with the US and UK recently imposing sanctions on high-ranking officials, including parliamentary speaker Anita Annet Among, over allegations of corruption. Meanwhile, in Kenya, President William Ruto, has called for an end to protests demanding his resignation and an end to “bad governance.” The protests, which have turned violent at times, have resulted in at least 50 deaths and 413 injuries since June 18, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights. In Nigeria, PUNCH Online understands that a planned protest, scheduled to take place from August 1 to 10, 2024, is gaining momentum across the country. The demonstration is aimed at drawing attention to the economic challenges faced by Nigerians. While the protest has garnered support from some quarters, it has also attracted mixed reactions and concerns from various stakeholders. The Presidency has described calls for the nationwide protests as treasonable. The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a post on his X account, claimed that those organising the protests were also behind the “destructive” #EndSARS protests of October 2020.

In the photos, the lawmaker gave his daughter keys to the SUV. She was also seen posing with the grey-coloured exotic car. Kogi asks residents not to join planned nationwide protest

The Kogi state government has asked its residents not to join a planned nationwide protest. There are reports that some youths are planning a nationwide protest between August 1 and 15 against the rising cost of living and economic hardship in the country. In a statement on Sunday, Kingsley Fanwo, Kogi commissioner for information and communication, said the state government is in solidarity with the efforts of the administration of President Bola Tinubu to fix the economy. “The President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR is working assiduously to get the nation’s economy working again,” Fanwo said. “Apart from the fiscal and monetary policies that are already yielding positive results, the Federal Government has injected economic stimulating incentives to address the challenges we are facing in the short, medium and long-term. Agriculture, industrialization, infrastructure, education and healthcare are receiving due attention from the Federal Government. “The administration of Alh. Ahmed Usman Ododo in Kogi State is completely committed to ensuring the central efforts percolate into the state as we have begun massive investments in agriculture, education, healthcare and infrastructure. “We have also continued to support homes across the state with palliatives to cushion the effects of the economic hardship occasioned by decades of mismanagement that the Tinubu Administration is working hard to correct. “As responsible citizens, there is a need to queue behind the efforts of the government at all levels to frontally deal with the issues challenging our well-being. “A protest would have been proper if the Government was making no efforts. Protests would have been popular if the efforts were not bearing fruits yet. Protests would have been understandable if we were not gradually moving out of the hopeless situation. “But a protest at this point is an attack on the foundation of our rebuilding process and an attempt to throw the nation into the darkness orchestrated during the #EndSars destruction and carnage.” Fanwo said intelligence reports have allegedly linked the protest with “opposition figures”. “We are proud of the fact that the people of Kogi have refused to yield the state to the macabre dance of agents of destabilisation,” he said.

Kamala Harris, Trailblazer Eying America’s Last Glass Ceiling

For years Kamala Harris faced criticism that she was not up to the job of being a heartbeat away from the presidency. Now, she finds herself feted by Democrats as their best hope to stop Donald Trump’s comeback. Despite blazing a trail as the first woman, Black and South Asian vice president in US history, the 59-year-old Democrat long struggled with approval ratings as bad or worse than President Joe Biden’s. The last 12 months, however, have revealed a transformed Harris. And with Biden’s endorsement of Harris after stunning the world by dropping his own reelection bid Sunday, she’s suddenly on the cusp of history. Harris will hope she has done the hard work to earn her full party’s backing in the midst of the crisis. As the ageing Biden faded over the last year, his “veep” emerged as a force on the campaign trail, pushing for abortion rights and reaching out to core voters, including suburban women and Black men. With a fondness for the f-bomb and her family nickname of “Momala” going viral, she has also finally started to cut through the noise to voters who previously barely paid attention. She has also won plaudits in party circles by staying loyal to the 81-year-old president during the last few weeks, even as political vultures circled over his candidacy. She now is likely to face Trump — a brutal battle against a candidate who defeated Hillary Clinton in her bid to become the first female commander-in-chief in 2016. The fact that Harris has blamed much of the criticism of her by Republicans on racism and sexism would likely make a win feel even more vindicating for her. Trump and other Republicans have notably stepped up their attacks on her as Biden’s position weakened and polls showed Harris would fare better against him than Biden. – ‘Ready to serve’ – A child of immigrant parents — her father was from Jamaica and her mother from India — Harris grew up in Oakland, California, in an activist household that saw her attend her first rallies in a stroller. Her focus on rights and justice saw her build an impressive CV, becoming California’s first Black attorney general and the first woman of South Asian heritage elected to the US Senate. Harris then went up against Biden in the 2020 primaries. In one stinging attack, she criticized him for allegedly opposing the bussing of students to segregated schools. “There was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bussed to school every day. And that little girl was me,” she said in a barbed attack on her future boss. But as his running mate, she consolidated the coalition that helped defeat the incumbent Trump in 2020. Her transition to the White House, however, proved difficult. Critics said she was underwhelming and gaffe-prone in a job that has been known to flummox many officeholders. Struggling to carve out a role, she was tasked by Biden with getting to the roots of the illegal migration problem, but fumbled and then got defensive in response to a question during a visit to the Mexican border. Unusually high staff turnover fed rumors of discontent in the vice presidential office. And Republicans relentlessly targeted her as being unfit to take over should the worst happen to America’s oldest-ever president, often resorting to stereotypes her supporters branded as sexist and racist. Harris told the Wall Street Journal in February: “I am ready to serve. There’s no question about that.”   – ‘Momala’ – Things began to change as the 2024 race got underway. The Biden campaign repeatedly deployed her to battleground states to hammer home the party’s message on abortion rights, with Harris becoming the first vice president to visit an abortion clinic. Gradually, she began to draw warm and fired-up crowds. Some of the outreach was, however, cringe-inducing. Earlier this year, she was mocked after she told chat show host Drew Barrymore her family sometimes called her “Momala,” and Barrymore replied: “We need you to be Momala of the country.” But voters seemed to be switching on. A clip of her quoting her mother as often saying “You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?” became a meme, with a rising sense among supporters that now could be her time. If elected, Harris would break one of the highest glass ceilings left for women in the United States — that of occupying the country’s top office. Her husband, Douglas Emhoff, would also be breaking new ground, moving from being the current Second Gentleman to the country’s first First Gentleman.
