Following the ultimatum, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti met with members of the organised labour in the state with a directive to the state Accountant-General to liaise with the union on their demands, among other issues. The state’s NLC Chairman, Ogbonnaya Okoro, had alleged that the state government is currently paying N20,100 while workers in the Local Governments receive N18,000 as minimum wage. Addressing the press on Sunday, July 14, 2024, Okoro warned the state government that failure to adhere to and implement the Memorandum of Understanding, reached at the meeting by July 28, 2024, “no other notice will be given to the government than to proceed on an indefinite strike.” The details of the agreement he highlighted include the payment of the N30,000 minimum wage and the N35,000 palliative wage award as approved by the Federal Government, payment of severance allowances to Directors and Permanent Secretaries compulsorily retired, payment of current leave allowances, among others. Those agitating for Nigeria’s division are dreamers -Buratai

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai, has urged those wishing Nigeria disintegrate to perish the thought, predicting that the country would continue to remain a united nation. Buratai spoke in Kuta, Osun State on Sunday at the 60th birthday celebration of Olowu of Kuta, Oba Adekunle Oyelude, an event attended by dignitaries that include; Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, ex-president, Olusegun Obasanjo, ex-Osun State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola among others. The ex Army boss, who described Olowu Kuta as a detribalise Nigerian, who has shown love to people across all ethnic groups in the country, said those agitating that the country should disintegrate must be ready to carve out their own part and move it to the ocean. Noting that the experience of civil war has taught Nigerians that agitation to divide the country would always fail, Buratai called for unity to further enhance Nigeria’s development. “You know that Nigeria is one, unless you remove those people who are agitating, and drift (them) to the Atlantic. We will remain one Nigeria, anybody who wants to leave Nigeria should carry the part of the land and take it to the Atlantic; not within the Nigeria territory. It is very clear the level of integration. “There are many Hausas here, there are many Yoruba and Igbo in the north. So, we should not allow politics to becloud our sense of unity and sovereignty. “Anybody that says that he wants to leave Nigeria is a dreamer because we had bitter experience during the civil war. So it is not something that we will joke with,” Buratai said. He advised Nigerians to embrace peace and focus on development, adding that the country should work more to further cement its unity by taking concrete action that would bring about development, and not by mere utterances. In his remarks, Oba Oyelude, said he would continue to champion cause of unity and progress for Nigeria, and called on well meaning Nigerians to do for the country’s unity and progress.

Facts To Know About Trump Assassination Attempt

Former US President, Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt at a political rally on Saturday, leaving security agencies hunting for information about how a gunman could attack a former American leader. Here is a blow-by-blow account of the shooting in Pennsylvania, where one Trump supporter was killed. – How it unfolded – Dressed in a white shirt, dark blazer and bright red MAGA cap, Trump was railing against illegal immigration when shots rang out at 6:08 pm (2208 GMT). Mohbad’s father appeals for Nigerians’ help in unraveling cause of son’s death0.00 / 0.00 “Take a look at what happened…” he said, his words cut off by four shots in quick succession. Trump grabbed his right ear as repeated shouts of “Get down!” were heard, before a fifth and sixth shot. The former president crouched down behind the lectern as Secret Service agents moved in around him. Screams were heard in the crowd. Within four seconds, further shots were fired, prompting more supporters to get down while additional agents rushed to the stage. Seventeen seconds after the first shots, a final pop was heard, and a woman screamed. Three heavily armed members of the security forces moved onto the stage 22 seconds after the shooting started. Secret Service agents swiftly shared instructions — such as “We’re clear” and “Let’s move” — before they lifted up a dishevelled Trump. Visible once more around one minute after the gunfire started, Trump said, “Let me get my shoes”, as the agents formed a ring around him. It’s another 13 seconds until Trump raised his fist to the crowd, who responded with cheers. As the former leader was ushered off the stage, his MAGA cap in hand, onlookers chanted, “USA!”. Trump paused briefly to pump his fist in the air, before stepping off the stage. Immediately before disappearing into an SUV and just two minutes after the assassination attempt started, Trump raised his fist once more and turned briefly towards the crowd. As the car pulled away, heavily armed security forces dressed in khaki fatigues moved onto the scene. – Trump says ‘felt the bullet’ – Trump gave his first account of the shooting at 8:42 pm, posting on his Truth Social site. “I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear,” Trump wrote. “I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.” The White House said President Joe Biden was given an initial briefing on the incident by 6:50 pm. “There’s no place in America for this kind of violence. It’s sick. It’s sick,” Biden told reporters in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Shortly before 10:30 pm, Biden’s office said he had spoken to Trump and would cut short his beach weekend to return to Washington. – Shooter named – The FBI identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from Pennsylvania’s Bethel Park, according to US media. Crooks was named by the FBI “as the subject involved in the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump”. The Secret Service said the shooter “fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside the rally” before being “neutralized” by agents. Multiple witnesses said they saw the gunman before the shooting and alerted authorities. Trump supporter Ryan Knight said he saw the attacker on a nearby building. “When I was sitting there, a guy said: ‘Oh God, he had a gun’,” Knight told journalists. Local police said they had “responded to a number of reports of suspicious activity” but gave no further details. The attacker was armed with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, US media reported. – Victims – The gunman and a bystander were killed at the rally, while two spectators were critically wounded. Two witnesses told US media they saw a man fatally shot in the head. “The man beside me suffered a gunshot to the head, was instantly killed (and)… Another woman looked like she got hit in the forearm or hand,” a man, whose name was only given as Joseph, told NBC News. A second witness, who said he was an emergency doctor, said he went to help after someone shouted that a person had been shot. “The guy had spun around and was jammed between the benches. He had a headshot here,” he said, indicating a spot on his head, in comments shared widely in US media. “There’s lots of blood, and he had brain matter,” said the man, who was wearing a white USA T-shirt stained with blood. Dangote Refinery Resolves Crude Supply Issues, To Roll Out Petrol In August

President of the Dangote Refinery, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, says the refinery is now set to roll out its petrol from August 2024, having resolved its crude oil supply issues through the help of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and the federal government. Dangote told senior journalists in Lagos on Sunday that the crude supply challenge, which affected the supply of petrol from the refinery, was resolved last week after the federal government intervened. The journalists were on a guided tour of the refinery, which is located at the Lekki Free Trade Zone in Lagos. Recently the Dangote Industries Limited (DIL) raised an alarm over attempts by international oil companies (IOCs) to frustrate efforts at purchasing crude for the refinery While the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC)are trying their best to allocate the crude for us, the IOCs are deliberately and willfully frustrating our efforts to buy the local crude,” the Vice President, Oil and Gas at DIL, Devakumar Edwin, told energy editors in June. “It seems that the objective is to ensure that our Petroleum Refinery fails. It is either they are deliberately asking for ridiculous/humongous premium or, they simply state that crude is not available. “At some point, we paid $6 over and above the market price. This has forced us to reduce our output as well as import crude from countries as far as the US, increasing our cost of production.” Fertiliser production Beyond resolving the crude supply issues and announcing plans to roll out petrol in August, Alhaji Dangote also told journalists that the refinery’s fertiliser unit would resume production in two weeks. This would give farmers more access to fertiliser for their farm products. Dangote told over 70 journalists who were part of the refinery tour that there was a massive request for fertiliser from Nigerians and the rest of Africa, so his group had no choice but to respond positively.

Court orders Lai Mohammed to disclose details of FG, X agreement

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos State has ordered a former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, and the Ministry of Information to disclose the details of the agreement between the Federal Government and X, formerly Twitter, to assess whether the agreement complies with the exercise of Nigerians’ human rights online. According to a statement issued by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, on Sunday, the judgment was delivered in May 2024 by Justice Nnamdi Dimgba following a Freedom of Information suit number: FHC/L/CS/238/2022, filed by the organisation. The Certified True Copy of the judgment was said to have been obtained last Friday. In his judgment, Justice Dimgba held that, “The former minister and the Ministry of Information are directed and compelled to provide a copy of the agreement between the Nigerian government and Twitter to SERAP solely to ascertain its impact on the protection of fundamental human rights of Nigerians.” Justice Dimgba added that, “Disclosing the details of the agreement between the Nigerian government and Twitter is in the public interest and does not affect Twitter’s business interest as a third party. It is also not prejudicial to Nigeria’s sovereignty and national security.” The judge also stated that, “The agreement between the Nigerian government and Twitter must still be disclosed irrespective of the harm to Twitter if it would be in the public interest to make sure disclosure.” The judge dismissed the objections raised by the minister’s counsel and upheld SERAP’s arguments. Consequently, the court entered judgment in favour of SERAP against the minister. Justice Dimgba further said, “The minister has failed to prove that the President has followed the due process of law to designate Twitter as a Critical National Information Infrastructure upon the National Security Adviser’s recommendation and issued an order in the Federal Gazette in that regard.” Justice Dimgba’s judgment, dated May 28, 2024, read in part: “Therefore, I hold that the disclosure of the Twitter agreement is not prejudicial to Nigeria’s sovereignty and national security or protected by the Official Secrets Act, as the minister has failed to prove the same. “The first question that needs to be answered is how the need to disclose the agreement is outweighed by the importance of protecting the commercial interests of the third party, Twitter. “The former minister has unequivocally argued that the disclosure could harm Twitter’s business interests in other jurisdictions, potentially with Twitter’s contractual negotiations. “However, this defence is hypothetical and does not point to the specific business or contractual interests of Twitter that could be affected.” He said the details of the agreement as requested by SERAP will not interfere with the commercial interests and trade secrets of Twitter or lead to financial losses to it even as the former minister has failed to prove the same. “Besides, Section 15(4) of the Freedom of Information Act envisages only real and not hypothetical financial loss or gain to or prejudice to, the competitive position of or interference with contractual or other negotiation of a third party like Twitter which could be affected by the disclosure. “No evidence was placed before this court pointing to the fact that Twitter has an agreement with another country as a precondition for its operation in such jurisdiction as obtainable in Nigeria. “I am of the view that SERAP has a legitimate reason to wish to be availed of the agreement, which is to understand how the agreement affects them and other Nigerians as far as the protection of the human rights of Nigerians are concerned,” he added. Justice Dimgba pointed out that another controversy is whether the need to disclose the agreement for public interest is subject to the need to protect national sovereignty, as argued by the minister. “National sovereignty depending on context is synonymous with national security. “In most cases, the need for national security outweighs public interest, including protection of fundamental human rights. In this case, however, I am of the view that the reason for the refusal by the minister to disclose the agreement does not come within the need to protect national security and sovereignty. “The minister’s defence is predicated on the Cybercrimes (Prohibition and Prevention Act) 2015 but has failed to prove how the Act relates to the Twitter agreement other than mentioning the same,” he added. He noted that more than merely linking SERAP’s request for the agreement to ‘critical national information infrastructure’ in Section 3 of the Cybercrime (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, nothing more is said about its relevance and how it supports non-disclosure of the Twitter agreement. “As such, the Cybercrime Act cannot apply to this case, and the protection that would have availed the minister is exempted. The minister also failed to prove how SERAP’s request for the agreement between the Nigerian Government and Twitter came within the protection of the Official Secrets Act. “SERAP’s lawsuit falls within the framework of Section 20 of the Freedom of Information Act. “The minister is directed and compelled to provide a copy of the agreement requested to SERAP to enable the organization to study the same and come to an assessment of whether the agreement incorporates the provisions of Chapter IV of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended] on fundamental human rights and Nigeria’s international human rights obligations,” the judge held. He averred that it is clear that Twitter was from the beginning ostensibly suspended from operating in Nigeria’s cyberspace solely to protect the country’s corporate existence, stressing that the same ban was lifted after Twitter reached agreement with the Nigerian Government on some terms and conditions for its operation in Nigeria’s cyberspace, noting that the former minister has not denied the existence of such an agreement. He added, “SERAP’s request does not involve disclosing personal information but relates to an agreement between the government and an international company that plays in the social media and public data space. “By paragraph 13 of SERAP’s affidavit evidence, the organization requested a copy of the agreement

Bayelsa Gov Poll: Appeal Court Dismisses LP’s Petition Against Governor Diri

The Court of Appeal has dismissed the petition filed by the Labour Party and its governorship candidate Udengmobofa Eradiri, challenging the emergence of Governor Douye Diri of the People’s Democratic Party, as governor of Bayelsa State in the November 2023 election. The three-man panel of the appellate court held that the tribunal was right in dismissing the LP’s petition for lacking in merit. The court held that Eradiri and his party failed to prove allegations of non qualification and certificate forgery against Governor Diri and his deputy, as contained in their petition. The court also held that the tribunal was right when it held that the appellants petition was abandoned, having not been signed by either the petitioners or their counsel, as required by law. The court noted that the issue of attachment of alleged forged documents to form EC8 submitted to INEC by the 3rd respondent is a pre election matter which should not have been brought to the tribunal. The panel, however, awarded the cost of two hundred thousand Naira against the appellant in favour of each of the respondents in the appeal.
