Three Gunmen Killed, Two Policemen Die In Imo, Anambra

Three hoodlums and two police officers have died in separate attacks on Sunday night and early hours of Monday in Imo and Anambra States. Police operatives in Imo state on Sunday night repelled an attack on Njaba Divisional Headquarters by hoodlums suspected to be affiliated with the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Njaba police division is in Njaba Local Government Area of Imo state, Nigeria’s Southeast. In July, gunmen attacked and killed three vigilante members and a civilian in this same area. However in Sunday night, it was gathered that the attackers, arriving in three SUVs, launched a violent assault on the headquarters with sporadic gunfire. In response, operatives swiftly took up defensive positions and engaged the assailants, resulting in the killing of three attackers. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Henry Okoye said the remaining assailants, who sustained various gunshot injuries, fled into nearby bushes. He said during the operation that operatives recovered one General Purpose Machine Gun, one AK-47 rifle, and three vehicles: a Toyota Lexus 470, a Mercedes GLK, and a Toyota Venza. Okoye stated that an intense operation, led by the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma, is currently underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects. The ongoing efforts aim to capture those responsible and ensure justice is served. Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma has commended the bravery of the operatives and as well assured the general public that the Command remains committed to enhancing the State’s internal security and will continue to take decisive actions against any threats to public peace. In Anambra In another incident, two officers were killed following a gunmen attack on the Umunze Police Station in Anambra State in the early hours of Monday. A statement by command’s spokesperson, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, noted that the officers paid the ultimate price in their attempt to resist the gunmen. He added that five unexploded improvised explosive devices were recovered while a joint security operation is on the trail of the attackers. The statement reads: “The Joint Security Forces, comprising the Police, Army, Navy, Civil Defence, and other security agencies, recovered five unexploded improvised explosive devices and are pursuing members of the arsonist and armed secessionist groups, who attacked the Umunze Police Station in the early hours of today, September 16, 2024. “The suspected armed proscribed group invaded the police facility with improvised explosives, firing sporadically, and part of the station caught fire. Unfortunately, two of the police operatives on duty during the gun battle paid the ultimate price in their efforts to prevent the assailants from causing further havoc. Their bodies have been recovered and taken to the morgue. “Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police CP Nnaghe Obono Itam visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment to reinforce and reassess security deployment. He calls on anyone with information that could aid the investigation to come forward and assures utmost confidentiality for any such information.”

UK police officer under probe for ‘asking Nigerian women not to report their abusive husbands’

Authorities in the United Kingdom (UK) are investigating a Metropolitan police officer seen in a video advising a group of Nigerian women not to report their abusive husbands. The footage, said to have been recorded six years ago, has resurfaced on social media. The UK Mirror said the video captured in 2018 at Divine Restoration International Church in Camberwell, UK, shows a police operative addressing mostly women, with other officers present. In the video, a police officer is speaking in English and Yoruba languages, while addressing topics like knife crime and familial dynamics, from a pulpit at a church. “When we get here, the government gave us money, they provided everything for us, benefit; we forgot all,” the officer said. “All our hard work doesn’t make us rich, only God’s blessing can enrich an individual. “Truly, we have come here to work hard to help our people, and that is the reason why many have multiple jobs they do. “Sisters, brothers, they phone you. You go back home; I see some of them; they are looking better than me and you. ”But when they call you, bring, do you think that if you don’t send it to them, they will die the next minute? Think about your home here. “This is your home. This is where you live. The society we are living in, if we allow it to be corrupted with the attitudes of the children of the youth of today, it becomes problematic. It’s not just for the police. It’s for everybody. “All those children that they think, you get them, you say, maybe if your child is not at home, you’ll be thinking, oh, where is this child? Where is my daughter? Where is my son? Until that child, enter the house before you can have peace of mind. Before you can have peace of mind. “We just try to help the situation. We have to work together. As my colleagues say, we have to work together. “They say clap hands together; make it work. But if you just say, no, I don’t want to say anything, I don’t want to do this. We the police here, we’re here to help you. “We’re not your enemy. We’re your friends. If you have any problem, any issue, if you say, no, you can stop out on the road, discuss with us, and we’ll give you advice. “If it’s something that we don’t have, we’ll take it to the higher authority in the office, and we’ll give the right advice. We have to work together. We’re here to help you. “It is my prayer that God Almighty accept all our prayers, and we will not use our hands to bury our children. “Please let us all train our children for good, thank you all.” According to Mirror, the footage goes on to show the officer allegedly saying that once Nigerian women arrive in the UK they start behaving “rudely” towards their husbands, adding that they should not call police on their husbands “but manage it.” “Police confirmed to the Mirror that the footage has been referred to the Met’s standards unit,” the newspaper said. Afruca, a group committed to protecting children’s interests in the UK, has lodged a formal complaint against the officer involved. Debbie Ariyo, executive officer of Afruca, who saw the video, said, “[The officer said], ‘do not call the police on your husband, but manage it.’ “We’ve been talking about violence against women, but we haven’t talked about violence against black women. Women in African and Caribbean communities,” she added. “And so, to hear a police officer who should understand the UK Domestic Violence Act of 2021 telling women that they shouldn’t call the police on their husbands, whatever the explanation is, it’s counterproductive. I felt it was an attack on Nigerian women. “Coming from a police officer, where we see many police officers being convicted of hurting women, it’s the first thing I thought about.” Adjei-Addoh, detective chief superintendent, said the video has been escalated to the professional standards team for examination. “The incident reported relates to an informal talk by a police member of staff made at a church in Camberwell back in 2018,” Adjei-Addoh said. “The comments made by the member of the police staff categorically do not represent the position of the Met in relation to domestic abuse and are wrong. “There are no circumstances where it would be appropriate for a victim-survivor of domestic abuse not to report it to the police if they feel able to do so. “Over recent years, the Met has developed a raft of dedicated investigation teams focused on domestic abuse. “Within the boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark, we work in partnership with the local authorities and third-sector charities involved in VAWG to ensure we have strategies to encourage domestic abuse reporting and support victim-survivors of domestic abuse. “The video has been referred to our professional standards unit to assess and consider what action is to be taken. Afruca and other charities like them carry out invaluable work in the domestic abuse space, and I understand the concern this matter has caused. “Lastly, I am keen to speak with those who have been particularly affected in an attempt to reassure them of our ongoing commitment to tackling this type of crime and protecting those who are at risk.”

Peter Obi: No Plans To Be Someone’s Vice President In 2027

Politician and presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has reacted to an alleged misinterpretation of his recent television interview, claiming that some fifth columnists had resorted to propaganda, deliberately distorting the narrative. In a series of posts via his official X handle on Saturday, Obi denied saying he had agreed to become a vice-presidential candidate in the 2027 elections. According to him, contrary to reports, he remains committed to the Labour Party and that anyone looking for a collaboration must state their true intentions. He emphasised he is not desperate to become president or any position but is determined to see Nigeria develop. Obi said he is ready to partner with those who share his vision for advancing Nigeria’s progress. According to the former Anambra State Governor, he does not want to be one of those preoccupied with 2027 while Nigerians are suffering from hunger, poverty, insecurity, and other pressing challenges. He said, “I have been inundated with calls and concerns regarding the interview I granted to News Central TV. In that interview, I took the opportunity it provided to explain my position in detail. However, some fifth columnists have resorted to propaganda, deliberately distorting the narrative. “Let me reiterate clearly what I said, which is on record. I do not want to be one of those preoccupied with 2027 while Nigerians are suffering from hunger, poverty, insecurity, and other pressing challenges. “I explicitly stated my openness to working with others, provided their intentions were not centred on state capture. I emphasized my commitment to partnering with those who share my vision for advancing Nigeria’s progress.” The former governor stated that he remains committed to the Labour Party, adding that he is committed to bringing millions of out-of-school children back into classrooms. “I also made it clear that I remain committed to the Labour Party, and if anyone wishes to negotiate or join forces, they must disclose their true intentions. When 2027 arrives, if I decide to run for any office, it will not be with those whose sole aim is state capture or merely winning an election. “I want them to explain how we will ensure that no child is left behind and how we will bring millions of out-of-school children back into classrooms, ensure healthy living and pull people out of poverty. “My statement was unequivocal, and I am genuinely surprised by the misrepresentation of my words. For the avoidance of doubts, I never stated at any time that I would be vice president to anyone and it’s unequivocal. “I have consistently maintained that I am open to working with those committed to building a new Nigeria. My commitment to Nigeria remains steadfast, and I even believe it is possible to contribute to its progress without occupying any office as I am already doing, ” he added.

The student community at Ekosodin, Edo State was thrown into panic on Saturday morning when a storey building on Ekhator Street, Benin, the state capital, collapsed during the early morning downpour in the state. Dangote refinery to sell petrol to only NNPCL – FG

The Federal Government has announced that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited will be the sole buyer of Premium Motors Spirit from Dangote Refinery. It also noted that interested marketers would have to buy the product from the national oil firm through its trading company. This was part of the agreement reached with the management of Dangote Refinery on the commercial terms for the supply of crude oil to the refinery and the off-taking and distribution of petrol and diesel from the facility. The Minister of Finance and the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, disclosed this at a press briefing on Friday in Abuja. The latest development, however, contradicts NNPC’s claim in a statement early this month that it does not intend to be the sole distributor of petrol produced by the Dangote refinery. The directive also implies that the government can still control the pricing of the product as it would be based on the agreement between the government and the refinery. The minister, represented by the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Dr Zacceus Adedeji, also announced that Dangote refinery will commence the distribution of petrol to marketers on Sunday with an initial 25 million litres per day. He said, “I am glad to announce that all agreements have been put in place, and the loading of the first batch of PMS, as already announced by NNPC, will commence on Sunday, September 15, 2024. And from October 1, NNPC will commence the supply of crude oil to Dangote Refinery to be paid for in naira. In return, Dangote Refinery will supply PMS and diesel of equivalent value to the domestic market to be paid for in naira.” “But for now, PMS will only be sold to NNPC. NNPC will then sell to various marketers.” The minister also said all associated regulatory costs pertaining to the Nigeria Ports Authority, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency and others would also be paid for in naira. “Diesel will be sold in naira by Dangote Refinery to any interested off-taker. All associated regulatory costs -NPA, NIMASA, Federal Inland Revenue and all other Regulatory fees that are associated with this transaction will be paid in naira. “The technical committee that worked to flesh out this initiative, I mean this committee will transition to an implementation, Execution and Monitoring Committee that will be working out of the Lagos for the next three to six months,” he added. On the approval to sell crude oil to local refineries in naira and purchase petrol from the refiners in the local currency, Edun said the decision would reduce pressure on the local currency. On July 29, the federal executive council approved a proposal by President Bola Tinubu directing the NNPC to sell crude oil to the Dangote refinery and other refineries in naira. The minister said the move would also eliminate unnecessary transaction costs, and improve the availability of petroleum products in the country.

I’ll never support Fubara again in my political life, says Wike

Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), says he will not again support Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers. Wike spoke on Friday during an interview on Channels Television. “I will never support Fubara again in my political life. I won’t do that. Everyone knows me,” he said. Wike said he laboured and sacrificed for Fubara to become Rivers governor in 2023. He added that the governor could not have won the election in the state without his support. The FCT minister accused Fubara of telling lies against him after he was elected as governor. “I will never support Fubara again in my political life. I won’t do that. Everyone knows me,” Wike said. That is why people should know me. I’m not a man who does things with my left hand. Everybody knows that. “People laboured to put up a structure. You won’t have even taken the fifth position. People laboured and sacrificed. I sacrificed to talk to the Ogoni people. “I sacrificed to talk to several people. Let us go this way (support Fubara). You turned it into that I’m asking for N20 billion, and N100 billion. You told lies against me. I brought you up, put you here and there.” Over the past few months, Rivers has been engulfed in a political crisis due to the rift between Fubara and Wike. Due to the rift, the state house assembly is polarised into two factions. The faction led by Martin Amaewhule with 27 members is loyal to Wike, while Victor Jumbo’s faction is loyal to Fubara. The two factions are in court to determine the authentic house of assembly. Fubara recognises the Jumbo-led faction, and the state government interacts with the group, which has three lawmakers, for legislative approvals.

Indonesia frees Nigerian sentenced to death for drug trafficking

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), says Indonesia has freed a Nigerian who had been sentenced to death for drug trafficking. In a statement issued on Friday, Dabiri-Erewa identified the Nigerian as Emmanuel Ihejirika, who had spent several years in prison. Dabiri-Erewa said Ihejirika regained his freedom after his case was taken up pro-bono by Emmanuel Isha Ogebe, a Nigerian lawyer based in Washington, DC. The NIDCOM boss said the lawyer took the case up to the Indonesian supreme court, which granted Ihejirika freedom. “Several years back, a delegation from Nigeria, headed by the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Ojo Madueke, which included Hon. Abike Dabiri Erewa, then a member of the House of Representatives, and former Chairman NDLEA, Mr. Ipinmosho, among others, had visited an Indonesian prison to plead for clemency for 21 Nigerians on death row convicted for drug trafficking. Four of them have been executed along with an Indonesian and British citizen,” the statement reads. “A Nigerian lawyer, Mr. Emmanuel Isha Ogebe, based in the USA, had later approached Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa for her intervention and offered pro bono services for Ihejirika, whose case appeared to be one of mistaken identity, and offered to follow the case through. “He succeeded, as he took the case up to the Supreme Court, and Ihejirika was finally let off the hook in December.” She stressed that the penalty for drug trafficking in Indonesia is death and urged Nigerians to stay away from crime. She also commended the lawyer for his selflessness and kindness for the pro bono services, and Patricia Alechenu, the Nigerian Charge D’Affaires in Indonesia, for her “unwavering support.

Lifting Of Dangote Petrol To Commence On September 15, Says FG

The Presidential Committee on the Sale of crude oil and Refined Product has announced that loading of the first batch of petrol from the Dangote Refinery will commence on Sunday, September 15. A member of the committee and Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji, disclosed this in Abuja on Friday. Briefing journalists, the FIRS boss said that from October 1, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) will commence the supply of about 385kbpd of crude oil to the Dangote Refinery to be paid for in Naira. “I am glad to announce that all agreements have been completed and loading of the first batch of PMS from the Dangote Refinery will commence on Sunday 15th September,” Adedeji stated. He explained that Dangote Refinery will in return supply PMS and diesel of equivalent value to the domestic market to be paid for in Naira. Other deliberations reached by the committee include the sale of Diesel in Naira by the Dangote Refinery to any interested off-taker while PMS will only be sold to NNPC. “From 1 October, NNPC will commence the supply of about 385kbpd of crude oil to the Dangote Refinery to be paid for in Naira “In return, the Dangote Refinery will supply PMS and diesel of equivalent value to the domestic market to be paid for in Naira. “Diesel will be sold in Naira by the Dangote Refinery to any interested off-taker. PMS will only be sold to NNPC, NNPC will then sell to various marketers for now. All associated regulatory costs will also be paid for in Naira.”

Nobody born of woman can say I am an outsider in PDP – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has insisted that no member of the Peoples Democratic Party can refer to him as an outsider, or as a mole engaging in anti-party activities. The minister dared party chieftains, governors and members of the party to go on national television to defend the allegation that he worked against the party in any way. Wike made the statement when he appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Friday. “There is nobody, no governor today in PDP, not anybody born of a woman can say I am an outsider. I dare anybody in the PDP to come out on national television. I dare any governor, I dare any National Working Committee member, to come out on national television to say I am a mole,” he said. The minister explained that President Bola Tinubu had written to his party both at the ward and the national levels, before he accepted his appointment as the FCT Minister in the Tinubu-led government, noting that he had never hidden his motives for whatever he did. “Before I took this appointment, I wrote to PDP. I wrote to PDP National; I wrote to PDP Zonal; I wrote to PDP in my state. My governor also signed a letter, that I should take the appointment. Yes, it’s true. The zonal party wrote that I should accept. Who in the PDP did not write or nominate names by President Tinubu for appointment? “They did. Yes! Let them come to say they did not do it. You see the problem we have in this country is that some people think they are too smart, they want to use people; I’m not that kind of person. What I want to do, I will do; what I will not do, everybody knows I won’t do it”, Wike stated. He also noted that despite the allegations of anti-party activities against him, he delivered the governorship and National Assembly slots for Rivers State during the 2023 general elections, adding that his delivery was a testament to his leadership. “In 2023, did I not say I won’t support you for President? Did I do it at the back? Did I not say I won’t support this, it’s not fair, it’s against equity, it’s against justice. Did I do it at the back? Did the PDP not win the governorship, did the PDP not win the national assembly? Did they not win the state assembly? “I challenge any of them, let us see in any of these states they are criticising whether they have a 100 per cent as we have. What does that tell you? Leadership,” he declared. — Clarification on ‘fire’ threats — “What did I say? I said it to the Governors’ Forum, and I repeat without any apology to anybody who is anywhere. In fact, when heaven falls, there will be peace. You came out on national television, after your meeting, led by the Governor of Bauchi State, the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, to read a communique with his colleagues that they are going to make sure their brother, their friend in Rivers State, would take over the structure, it doesn’t matter whether it is illegal or legal. “And I am sitting as the Minister of the FCT from that state. You look at it that there’s nobody from that state, you make such a statement, and I should fold my arms because you say you are a governor, which I was never before? I was never a Governor?” he quizzed. The FCT minister noted that he didn’t make “any bad statements,” adding that he has the wherewithal to say there’ll be crisis in another PDP-led state. “You are trying to cause a crisis in my state politically, what do you want me to do? I didn’t make any bad statements. What is fire? It is a figure of speech. You want to cause a crisis in the political system in my state? You too would also have a crisis. I never said that Bauchi State would be on fire, I never said that Oyo State would be on fire. All I’m saying, is you don’t want my state to be politically stable, you want to illegally, unconstitutionally interfere in a legitimate process, in a legal process that is going on, and you want me to fold my arms to say because you are a governor, Chairman of the governors’ forum, or because you are members of the forum? Who told you I do not have that capacity to say you too in your state, that crisis will be there?” he further lamented. Speaking on calls by the leader of the Ijaw nation, Edwin Clark, for the Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, to ensure his arrest because of his statements, Wike said, “Edwin Clark is not fair, does not love Rivers State, he is not from Rivers State, and he’s from Delta State. For crying out loud, is he from my state? “We are talking about the PDP. Is he a member of the PDP? Let me see his membership card, let me see when he contributed to the PDP. Let me see how much he has given to the PDP, to fight for the PDP to win in Rivers,” he added.
