Oil price drops below $70 per barrel — lowest since December 2021

Brent crude oil price has dropped below $70 per barrel for the first time since December 2021. During trading hours on Tuesday, Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, dropped by 3.45 percent to $69.36 per barrel. On the other hand, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) fell by 3.86 percent to $66.06 a barrel. According to a Bloomberg report, adverse economic statistics from the United States (US) and China — notably the dismal import numbers that were made public on Tuesday — have stirred fears about the demand for oil in the top two consumers and increased the likelihood that there will be a surplus in the coming year. The publication said the fear was compounded by surging output in producing nations outside the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). The decline in the oil price comes five days after OPEC and its allies (OPEC+) postponed plans to increase production by 180,000 barrels a day (bpd). According to OPEC, countries, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria, and Oman, decided to extend their voluntary cuts of 2.2 million bpd until November. Thereafter, OPEC said the cuts would be gradually phased out on a monthly basis starting December 1, “with the flexibility to pause or reverse the adjustments as necessary”. The oil cartel said overproducing countries also reconfirmed their commitment that the entire overproduced volume will be fully compensated for by September 2025.

Money Laundering: Prosecution Of Bank Executives To Commence Soon — EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said bank executives are complicit in aiding money laundering in the country, adding that it would commence prosecution soon. Speaking at the 17th annual conference of the Chartered Institute Bankers of Nigeria, the Chairman of the EFCC, Ola Olukoyede said the commission will soon start prosecution of bank executives involved in corruption. According to him, findings revealed complicity in money laundering, illegal forex sales and trading among bank officials. While calling on the CIBN to step up its regulatory functions to guard against fraud, the EFCC boss said major financial fraud were conducted through the nation’s banking system. The commission recently urged the National Assembly (NASS) to enact a law which supports the whistle-blower policy of the government. Olukayode who made the call at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) conference in Lagos, noted that once the law is enacted, it will make it mandatory for law enforcement agencies to protect the whistle-blowers. The EFCC chairman also called on lawyers across the country to always observe due diligence in their practices. This, according to him, is necessary for them to know the background of their clients so as not to run foul of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) regulations. He said, “As lawyers, we are supposed to hold a position of trust in our professional conduct. While we try to comply with international laws and regulations, we should also do what is right for ourselves to protect the sanctity of our profession, which is very key. “Don’t try to protect suspected criminals, people who must have committed financial crimes. So, if you know who we are looking for, you must bring that person to the open and we will do our part. “Doing the right thing doesn’t necessarily come from the way of international conventions. If you do the right things, they will automatically take you out of the grey list. “It is expedient on you to, at least, know who your client is. You are expected to be paid from a legitimate source. “If you are a victim of crimes, you will understand what I am saying. As lawyers, you must not, in any way, derogate or demean your professional commitment to your clients. “Even a part of the money laundering Act that we have evaluated doesn’t stop me from enforcing the regulations of the EFCC Act and other financial laws in Nigeria.”

Ajaero: Tinubu’s oppressive control surpasses military dictatorship — Atiku

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration and security agencies to redirect their intimidation towards the perpetrators of violence. The former Vice President, in a post on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday, also alleged that the level of oppressive control imposed by Tinubu’s administration now surpasses even the harshest days of military dictatorship. Recall that the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, was arrested by the Department of State Services on Monday morning at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport while heading to the UK for official duties. On the same day, the DSS also raided the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project’s Abuja office.Ajaero was held in custody throughout the day and was released late Monday night. In his response, Atiku stated that Ajaero’s arrest exemplifies the current administration’s persistent efforts to intimidate and suppress organised labour. He stated, “The escalating assault on civil society and the media by the Bola Tinubu administration is profoundly disturbing. The level of oppressive control now imposed surpasses even the harshest days of military dictatorship. “The recent arrest of Mr Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, en route to an official event, epitomises this regime’s relentless campaign to intimidate and subdue organised labour.” The former Vice President added that the DSS raid on SERAP was fundamentally opposed to the principles of freedom and justice. The post read in part, “Just days prior, security forces detained a journalist, only to later claim it was a grievous error. What if the outcome had been fatal? “Now, Tinubu’s regime extends its repressive grasp to encroach upon SERAP, an action that stands as a grave affront to our democratic values. This siege is anathema to the principles of freedom and justice. “Tinubu and his security apparatus must redirect their fervour and intimidation towards the true perpetrators of violence — terrorists and bandits — who are inflicting immeasurable suffering upon the Nigerian people.”

SERAP: Our routine investigation, misinterpreted – DSS justifies action

The Department of the State Service, DSS, has reacted to the allegation leveled against it by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP. SERAP yesterday alerted Nigerians that the secret service invaded its Abuja office, demanding to see the rights group’s directors. The rights group in a statement to Vanguard urged President Bola Tinubu to immediately direct DSS to end the intimidation, harassment and attack against their organization and the threat of arrest against its directors. It noted that some officers from DSS invaded their Abuja office. Describing the looks of the officers, the group opined that “A tall, large, dark-skinned woman entered our office, accompanied by a slim, dark-skinned man. Other officers were sighted in two unmarked vehicles stationed outside our office. The officers who interrogated our office requested to see our directors”. In view of this, Nigerians took to various communication channels to condemn DSS action, noting that its unjust action represents a clear violation of the rights to freedom of association and expression, fundamental pillars in any democratic society. But reacting in a statement on Tuesday via its official website, the secret service justified its action, saying that their routine investigation was misinterpreted. Read the full statement bellow: “The Department of State Services (DSS) has been inundated with multiple enquiries on its alleged unlawful invasion of SERAP offices in Abuja and Lagos. “This narrative is inaccurate and misleading in its intent. For the records, a team of two (2) unarmed Service operatives were lawfully detailed on routine investigation to SERAP office in Abuja, which has sadly been skewed and misinterpreted as unlawful, harassment and intimidation of SERAP officials. The Service further wishes to state that such official enquiries and liaison are traditional and does not in any way amount to illegality or raid. “While it assures of indept investigation of these malicious contents, it sues for citizens’ participation in national security management. The DSS, therefore, urges the public to disregard these false narratives as it restates its commitment to utmost professionalism in the discharge of its core mandate”.
