Presidency disowns yacht spotted in France with Nigerian flag

The Presidency has disassociated itself from a yacht seen flying the Nigerian flag in St. Tropez, a coastal town in France. PUNCH Online reported that a video of the yacht, which displayed the Nigerian flag during a vacation in the French town, went viral on social media, sparking reactions from netizens. In response to the video, the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Digital and New Media, Otega Ogra, clarified via his X (formerly Twitter) page on Saturday that the yacht in question belongs to a private individual. Ogra explained that flags used by the President or the Armed Forces do not feature a coat of arms, stressing that the official Nigerian flag is Green-White-Green without any additional symbols. He wrote, “There have been false claims circulating that a private individual’s yacht spotted in St. Tropez is a Nigerian government yacht. Here are some points to consider in order to discern the truth. “The 42-metre Benetti yacht currently being circulated online has been privately owned for around five years since its construction. “It is important to note that this specific yacht has no connection or ownership ties to the Nigerian government, President, or Armed Forces. Any claims or assertions suggesting otherwise are simply untrue and inaccurate. It is not uncommon for luxury yachts to fly the flag of the owner’s country as well as the flag of the country in which they are registered. “The official Nigerian flag is Green-White-Green without a coat of arms in the middle. Flags representing the Nigerian President or the Armed Forces do not contain a coat of arms in the centre. Placing anything in the centre of the flag is a clear deviation.”

Dangote Refinery: No Guarantee Of Lower Prices – NNPCL

. The Nigeria National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL) on Saturday said there is no guarantee of lower price as it is set to begin lifting petrol from the Dangote refinery. NNPCL would reportedly commence lifting petrol from the refinery on September 15. In a statement by its spokesman, Olufemi Soneye, the company said the pricing of petroleum products from any refinery, including the Dangote Refinery Ltd, is determined by global market forces. Soneye, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, said that there is no guarantee of lower prices associated with domestic refining of the products in the country. “The pricing of petroleum products from any refinery, including the Dangote Refinery Ltd. (DRL), is determined by global market forces,” he said. Soneye’s response comes amid rumours that the company is attempting to monopolise the offtake of all products from the Dangote Refinery Ltd. “The attention of the NNPC Ltd has been drawn to a press release by the Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, which claims that the Dangote Refinery Limited (DRL) is being undermined by actions of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd). “Specifically, MURIC asserts that recent changes to the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) will prevent the Dangote Refinery from offering lower prices and that NNPC Ltd. has become the sole offtaker of all products from the refinery,” he stated.

Report: 13,346 killed, 9,207 abducted under Tinubu

Since President Bola Tinubu’s inauguration on May 29, 2023, Nigeria has seen a dramatic rise in violence, with 13,346 people killed and 9,207 abducted across the country. This surge in violence, spanning 667 local government areas, is attributed to terrorism, banditry, farmer-herder conflicts, and other forms of social upheaval. A recent Nigeria Security Report by Beacon Consulting, a firm specialised in security risk management, provides a detailed breakdown. From May to December 2023, there were 5,802 deaths and 2,754 kidnappings. The situation worsened in 2024, with 7,544 killed and 6,453 abducted between January and September. Experts are expressing concerns over the unending security challenges and are urging President Tinubu to take more decisive action. “The security crisis is severe,” a security analyst, Nnamdi Chive, told Saturday PUNCH. “Economic hardship has only exacerbated the problem, compounding an already grave situation.” At a security and peace summit hosted by the North-West Governors Forum in Katsina State in July, President Tinubu described the ongoing insecurity, especially in the North-West, as “inherited security compromises.” He suggested that the current banditry and insurgency were partly due to historical injustices faced by conflict-affected communities. Despite this, the experts argued that a more effective strategy was needed. Chive emphasised the importance of securing Nigeria’s borders saying, “National security involves protecting your borders effectively. “The North-East and North-West borders need to be better controlled to prevent foreign elements from destabilising local communities,” he said. Analysing President Tinubu’s government approach since assumption of office, he said, “The government’s efforts have had some success, such as in Borno State, where displaced persons are beginning to return. “However, insurgents are adapting by shifting their operations to new areas.” On his part, security expert, Colonel Yomi Dare, highlighted the role of economic hardship and corruption in exacerbating the security crisis. “The current situation has been worsened by economic hardship. This has added to an already dire situation,” he said.

Nigerian flag designer, Taiwo Akinkunmi, buried after one-year

Nigeria’s national flag designer, Taiwo Akinkunmi has been buried in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital after one year. The remains of the octogenarian were interred on Friday after a funeral service held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Liberty Road, Ibadan. The service was attended by members of the Oyo State cabinet; members of the state advisory council; former Oyo Assembly lawmaker, Honourable Ibrahim Bolomope; GOFAMINT members; personnel of various security agencies, the national choir, students of Akinkunmi’s alma mater family members, among others. In his remarks, the Acting Governor of Oyo State, Bayo Lawal, described Akinkunmi as a national figure, saying that his burial should have been a Federal Government affair, rather than being left to the deceased family and the Oyo State government. Lawal noted that Pa Akinkunmi represented a classic example of a national icon, adding that the Federal Government should not abdicate its duty to give him the deserved respect and honour, whether alive or dead. Meanwhile, the State Government in a statement the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade said “The commemoration of the death of an iconic figure like Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, who designed the Nigerian flag 64 years ago at the age of 23, should be treated as a national festival.” “The fact that Pa Akinkunmi hailed from this part of the country does not diminish his status as a national hero.” In his sermons, the General Secretary of GOFAMINT, Pastor Femi Omowumi, said Pa Akinkunmi had demonstrated the fact that one could contribute to national development without necessarily holding a political office. The son of the deceased, Akinkunmi Akinwumi, while speaking at the service, said the family was open to any manner the Federal Government deemed fit to immortalise their father.

NEWS EXTRA: Bandits fighting against neglect — Gumi

A Kaduna State-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has said politicians are not funding the unrest in the northern part of the country. In recent times, insecurity has continued to increase in the region, particularly the North-West. Many, including the monarch of Gobir in Sokoto State, have been killed by bandits and other criminals. In 2021, the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, alleged that politicians were sponsoring the banditry being witnessed in parts of the country. However, in an interview with Saturday PUNCH, Gumi dismissed the allegations that politicians were behind the unrest in the region. He said, “This is an unintelligent allegation. No politician is sponsoring these people. We are all victims. The opposition is not even behind this. This is a natural reaction of people neglected for centuries without education. “Now they are exposed to the world and they want education. These people are exposed to the Internet and they see how much they are deprived. They want to fight back. This act is not by anybody.” He further stated that the people were expressing a strong desire for a better future for their offspring. “We went to a village between Abuja and Kaduna and we built schools for herdsmen. To our surprise, over 600 of them with their families have started schooling there. They told us that they do not want their children to be like them. Imagine if we did that all around the country.”
