Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has been accused of giving democracy bad name for failing to conduct Local Government election in his eight years in office.

The Anambra Elders Council in a statement made available to newsmen in Awka, the Anambra State capital weekend said Governor Obiano failure to conduct Local Government election in the last eight years is a bad precedent for democracy, rule of law and constitutional democracy.

The group in the statement signed by its Executive Chairman Nze Udemadu F. Udemadu, also lamented that the Anambra State Governor equally failed to construct and rehabilitate strategic roads in the State and provide basic infrastructural development unlike his predecessor Mr Peter Obi.

The Elders Council noted that local government election is at the grassroot of democracy, stressing that without democracy at the grassroot, all other claims about democratic ideals are mere lip service.

They wondered how the Governor allowed himself to join the dishonorable record of past Governors of the State who refused to conduct local government election.

They said since after Obiano’s first tenure, he ceased to perform and abandoned the people of Anambra State, travelling often abroad in greater part of his second tenure.

Elders Council faulted the flaunting of building of airports and other white elephant projects without providing basic infrastructures like roads,Water, Electricity and Youths Empowerment for the ordinary members of the State.
.
” You can’t build an airport without good roads for the people and
other people oriented projects without even rehabilitating existing roads for the people of the State.

The Elders Council bemoaned the deplorable condition of the roads leading to Onitsha Main Market which includes Niger Street,Bida Road, Creeks Road which is the “oil well” of the State.

Elders Council advised the Governor to as a matter of urgency declare State of emergency on bad roads in Anambra State.

The group also asked the Governor to remove hoodlums on major roads and streets especially in Upper Iweka along Onitsha Owerri Road and Bridgehead who have been extorting, maiming and killing innocent persons with impunity in the name of revenue collectors.
