Imo residents react as EEDC restores electricity supply after NLC suspended strike

Owerri residents have expressed excitement after the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC suspended it’s industrial action for two weeks.

Electricity supply has also been restored in some part of the town.

Last Thursday, the statewide strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, in Imo State to protest unpaid wages and violations of workers among others, threw Owerri, the state capital, and other parts of the state into darkness.

ALSO, the industrial action embarked upon by NLC in Imo state have crumbled the economy of the state.

Key stakeholders of NLC like National Union of Petroleum and Gas Workers and Enugu Electricity Distribution Company had already shutdown their services against the residents of the state.

While many business owners have shutdown, others now work half days.

Petroleum have become scarce in the state owing to hike in transportation fares.

Few fuel stations that are dispensing fuel sell at higher prices as motorists besiege their premises queuing to buy fuel.

On Tuesday night, the Nigeria Labour Congress suspended for two weeks its on going industrial action in Imo State.

The suspension of the strike was announced by a statement issued by the NLC national president, Joe Ajaero.

The statement disclosed that the suspension of the strike was due to interventions made by “highly respected and well- meaning Nigerians from within and outside Imo State.”

The statement stated that the lifting of the industrial action was to enable residents of the state vote the candidates of their choices during this Saturday’s House of Assembly elections in the state.It therefore warned that if at the end of two weeks, the state government fails to reverse its anti- Labour policies, NLC would resume the industrial action in the state.

Monitored by our correspondent in Owerri on Wednesday morning while residents were reacting to suspension of the NLC strike and restoration of electricity in Owerri, many expressed excitement, while others said they are yet to see any sign of electricity supply in their areas on Wednesday morning.

A resident in Owerri, Precious Benita said, “Light neva show dis side, I’m still practising how to shout my own sha with my compound children.

Another resident, Sonie Korie said, “Yes, I have currently.

“We never see for Chukwuma Nwoha down to Trans-egbu Owerri
Abi dem don commot us for Owerri, Imo state?, “Ogbonna Ngọzika asked.
