Adamawa North: Senate Swears In Yohanna As Abbo’s Replacement

Post Date : October 26, 2023

The Senate has sworn in Amos Yohanna as the new Senator representing Adamawa North Senatorial District.

Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, who presided over the plenary on Wednesday, swore in Yohanna a week after the Court of Appeal in Abuja sacked the erstwhile lawmaker representing the district, Elisha Abbo.

While Abbo is of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Yohanna is of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The Appeal Court which delivered judgement on October 16 nullified Abbo’s victory at the 25 February poll and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue a Certificate of Return to Yohanna as the duly elected lawmaker representing the area in the National Assembly.

Shortly after the appeal court’s verdict in Abuja, Abbo accused the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, of being behind his sack.

He also alleged that four other senators, who opposed the senate presidency bid of Akpabio in June, would be sacked from the upper chamber through court judgements.

Though Akpabio denied the allegation, Abbo thereafter made a U-turn and apologised to the Senate President.

Abbo quoted Akpabio as saying to him, “I swear by my mother’s grave that I’m not involved; I don’t even know that you’re in court.”
