Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has been urged to carry out comprehensive palliative work at the Onitsha -Owerri Road to reduce the hardship of home-bound travellers this season.
Anambra Elders’ Forum (AEF), which appealed said rehabilitation of the road has become necessary to reduce the traffic gridlock on the road which causes untold hardship to the users of the road.
They said this Save Our Soul (SOS) message to the Governor to rehabilitate the about three kilometres of failed Onitsha portion of the road is to ameliorate the sufferings of the users of the road this yuletide season.
In the statement by the President of the forum, Dede Uzor A Uzor, the group said although the road is trunk A, which is a federal road, the fact is that most users of the road are Anambra citizens.
To that extent, the forum said, the State Government cannot continue to wait for the Federal Government, while its citizens and economy continue to suffer.
The rehabilitation of the road, the firm said, will also boast the socioeconomic activities of the State.
“We implore the Executive Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo to embark on immediate palliative maintenance of the road, especially during this festive season to enable members of the public who are coming back for their Christmas holiday to reach their destination without the usual horrible traffic gridlock which characterises the road at this season due to its deplorable condition,” the Anambra Elders’ Forum said.
They lamented that because of the poor condition of the road, it has become very notorious for criminal activities
In the same vein, the forum urged the governor to embark on aggressive road maintenance of Onitsha South Local Government Area especially roads in Fegge which the entire local government does not have more than 12 kilometres
They said most critical roads in the area have become impassable, thereby, paralysing socioeconomic activities in the area in particular and Onitsha in general. Dede Uzor appealed.
