Bandits kidnap many students in Matawalle’s town, gov imposes curfew

Bandits who were in large number stormed Government Day Secondary School, Kaya, in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State, and kidnapped over 100 students.

Speaking to The PUNCH, an indigene of the area, Malam Abu Kaya, said that the bandits arrived the school at about 11:00A.M on Wednesday when the school was in session.

He stressed that, although the number of the kidnapped students was yet to be known, the victims would be more than 100.

“We are yet to identify the actual number of students abducted, but we believe that they would reach 100,” the source said.

He maintained that the school has a population of over 300 students, adding that a significant number of the students were taken by the bandits.

Kaya further explained that the whole town had been deserted due to the fear that the bandits could return to the area.

Efforts to get comments from the state Police command failed, as the phone numbers of the spokesperson of the command, SP Mohammed Shehu, could not be reached after several attempts.

Zamfara imposes dusk-to-dawn curfew, shuts down schools

Zamfara State Government has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew throughout the 14 local government in the state.

The government has also shut down schools, both private and public, operating in all the local governments in the state.

The measure came on the heels of bandits’ invasion of Kaya town in Maradun Local Area of the state on Wednesday morning, where a yet-to-be-ascertained number of pupils were abducted from the Government Day Secondary School, Kaya, in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State where the governor, Bello Matawalle, hails from.

The school, according to an indigene of the area, Abu Kaya, shas about 300 students, a large number of whom were taken by the bandits who had arrived the school at about 11:00A.M on Wednesday when the school was in session.
