Cost of governance: El-Rufai fires 19 appointees

Post Date : May 26, 2021

Nasir el-Rufai, the Kaduna State governor, has sacked 19 political appointees in a continuation of the rightsizing exercise the Kaduna State Government has embarked on.

The sacked officials included two special advsiers, a deputy chief of staff and several special assistants.

The disengagement of the political appointees was announced on Wednesday afternoon. A statement from Sir Kashim Ibrahim House stated that el-Rufai had thanked the appointees for their services to the state.

Kaduna State has been in the news for sacking 60 per cent of its civil service. This led to a five day warning strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) which started on May 17. The strike was called off on the third day after thugs who were reported to have been mobilised by the government attacked peaceful protesters.

El-Rufai had performed similar downsizing exercise when he served as the FCT Minister. He had also downsized the federal civil service by a quarter. He has however come under serious criticism for his recent actions which has left many jobless in a failing economy and in a pandemic that many are yet to recover from.
