For the fear of being attacked, a yet to be identified naval officer has shot and killed a woman and her son at a checkpoint in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Crimedacts.news gathered that the ugly incident happened at a naval checkpoint in Idemmiri, Ogbaru Local Government Area in Anambra State.
Narrating what happened , her husband, Mr Geofrey Sampson told Hon. Chinyere Mbakwe, the Senior Special Assistant to Gov Obiano on secondary school monitoring, in a video seen by Crimefacts.news on Saturday, Mr Geoffrey said him and his wife Chinaza are taking their weak son to the hospital at 2am in the morning.
He said, “I, my wife and my son accompanied by our tenant on driving to the hospital reached the naval checkpoint but there was no officer on sight. When we reached the naval gate, the officer there released series of gunshots towards my car.
“So I got down from my car and enquired about the shootings since there was no one was at his the checkpoint when I passed. The naval officer asked where I was going and I told him that my child was very sick and I was talking him to the hospital.
“The naval officer ordered me to open the car door, he saw my weak child and asked us to go . As I was about to start the car, my houseboy began to call my wife, behold flashing torchlight on her, I saw where a bullet penetrated her body from her back.
Speaking further, Mr Geoffrey said two naval officers who were sent to escort them to hospital, flee on the way. He also said that the first hospital they went to (King’s kid)at first refused to open gate for them but later, the hospital asked them to go to another hospital.
“We later went to Borromeo hospital Onitsha where my wife and child were confirmed dead.
“The naval head of that particular base in Ogbaru came to my house and apologised to me”, Mr Geoffrey said.
Commenting on the incident, a source close to the area said, “I was told of the story two days ago by women at Coca cola fruit Market that lives close to that Navy Check point. The women said the child being taken to the hospital is having convulsion. Almost the way they narrated it.
“It was clear the Navy officer was sleeping and get up suddenly only see vehicle at advanced position and started shooting. Its a clear recklessness with lethal weapon.
“Security personnels cannot by any stretch capitalised on the Security situations in South East to be shooting arbitrary at innocent citizens”, the source lamented.
As the time filling this report, Naval authorities in Anambra could not be reached for comments.
