FactCheck: Claim that Israel gave Chad map of Boko Haram terrorist’s location in 2020, FALSE

Claim

@FinPlanKaluAja1 on X claimed that Israel gave Chad a map showing the pinpoint location of Boko Haram nests in the desert in 2020.

Verdict

This claim is FALSE. Although reports confirmed that the Chad military repelled and killed many Boko Haram terrorists in April 2020, there’s nowhere in these reports that stated that Israel aided the Chadian military.

Idris Déby was the 6th President of Chad from 1991—2021. Déby was injured on 19 April while commanding troops on the frontline fighting the northern rebel incursion by the Front for Change and Concord in Chad (FACT) and died the following day.

Background To This Claim

On March 25th, Boko Haram Islamist militants killed 92 Chadian soldiers in an attack on an island in Lake Chad.

President Idriss Déby said on a visit to the area that the raid was the jihadists’ deadliest yet in Chad.

Lake Chad is the region where forces from Chad, Nigeria, and Niger have been fighting the insurgents in a joint campaign for the last five years.

Images on state TV in Chad showed Mr. Déby walking among burnt-out armored vehicles.
“I have taken part in many operations… but never in our history have we lost so many men at one time,” the Reuters news agency quoted him as saying.
According to military sources quoted by the AFP news agency, the attack was on an army base on the island of Boma and lasted for seven hours.
Weapons were captured by the insurgents, who escaped with them in speedboats, they said.

Verification

Responding to the March 25 attack by the terrorists, the Chadian army said on April 10, 2020, that it had wound up an offensive against Boko Haram jihadists in the Lake Chad border region in which 52 troops and 1,000 jihadists were killed.

Army spokesman Colonel Azem Bermendoa Agouna told AFP that the operation, launched after nearly 100 soldiers were killed in March, ended Wednesday after the Nigerian jihadists were forced out of the country.

It is the first official snapshot of the outcome of Operation Bohoma Anger, launched after Chad’s armed forces suffered the biggest one-day loss in their history.

Chad had declared departments near the lake “a war zone” to give the military free rein for the offensive.

The Chadian troops chased the Boko Haram fighters “deep into Niger and Nigeria until their armies took over the fight,” Agouna said.

Two Nigerian security sources confirmed that the Boko Haram fighters were forced to retreat.

Continuous Attacks By Insurgents In 2021, 2022 In Chad

In August 2021, at least 26 Chadian soldiers were killed after they were reportedly ambushed by jihadis while on patrol in the volatile Lake Chad region, the Chadian military said Thursday.

“Twenty-six members of the Chadian army fell on the field of honor, 14 others have been wounded, including eight seriously,” army spokesperson General Azem Bermandoa Agouna said. “Several terrorists were neutralized and cleanup operations continue.”

The attack reportedly took place at the Lake Chad island of Tchoukou Telia.

In November 2022, Boko Haram terrorists killed ten Chadian soldiers in an attack on an island in Lake Chad.

The terrorists looted the forward military post at Bouka-Toullorom island during the attack in the early hours of Nov 22.

Among the victims was the Commander of the Ngouboua military sector, whose name was not mentioned.

Conclusion

The X user intentionally made up a story to misinform the public. There’s nowhere it can authoritatively be confirmed that Israel gave Chad a map showing the pinpoint location of Boko Haram terrorists in the desert.
