At least 15 people have been killed, and several others injured, following an attack on the Gidan Ado community in Ganawuri, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The victims, primarily members of the Irigwe ethnic group from Bassa LGA, were targeted during a Sunday night assault that left the community in mourning.

Despite efforts by security agencies to ensure a peaceful Christmas celebration through engagements with diverse communities and stakeholders, armed men defied these measures, causing havoc in the affected area.

Confirming the incident, Riyom LGA Chairman Sati Shuwa said, “The community was attacked on Sunday night. Fifteen people were killed. A mass burial has been conducted, and two survivors are receiving treatment in a hospital.”

The National Publicity Secretary of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), Sam Jugo, detailed the victims’ identities, including men, women, and a one-year-old child. Among the deceased are Dauda Arabo (48), Hassana Wula (52), Basuna Moses (22), Faith Basuna (19), Laraba Randi (18), and several others.

Linda Moses (32) sustained severe injuries and is receiving medical attention at an undisclosed location.

In a statement, Jugo called for restraint and urged security agencies to prevent further attacks or reprisals. “Our hearts bleed for the demise of our kinsmen. May their souls rest in peace, and may God comfort their families and the Irigwe nation.”

Both the Plateau State Police Command and Operation Safe Haven (OpSH) have launched investigations into the attack but have yet to provide further details.

The incident underscores the fragility of peace in the region, which has seen recurring violence over the years.
