Gunmen ‘kill LG chair’ in Kebbi

Bako Bala, chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Suru LGA of Kebbi state, has been reportedly shot dead by gunmen.

In a post on Facebook, Zaidu Bala, special adviser on television and radio to Nasir Idris, Kebbi governor, said Bala was killed at his residence.

“To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. Alhaji Bako Bala has died — APC chairman of Suru local government,” the post reads.

“He died after kidnappers kidnapped him and his family yesterday night where they shot him with gun. He died now at Medical Centre Hospital in Birnin Kebbi. May Allah have mercy on him.”

When reached for comments, Nafiu Abubakar, police spokesperson in Kebbi, said he would verify the information and revert.

The north-west region has seen a surge in banditry recently, as troops continue their decade-long efforts to combat insecurity and instability in Nigeria.

On September 11, personnel of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) thwarted a terrorist attack on Department of State Services (DSS) facilities in the Shiroro LGA of Niger state.

On September 12, gunmen reportedly kidnapped many travellers on a highway in Zamfara.

On September 13, troops of Operation Hadarin Daji (OPHD) killed Kachallah Buzu, a notorious bandit kingpin, and several of his fighters, in Mayanchi village of the state.

On September 25, security operatives reportedly killed Kachalla Makore, a notorious bandit kingpin, and several of his fighters, in Magami area of Gusau LGA in Zamfara.

Tinubu asked security forces to maintain momentum while commending them for enhanced national security, urging persistence until all threats are eradicated completely and permanently.

The president assured them of his continued support to ensure the nation’s safety and security.
