The Nigerian military has launched ‘Operation Golden Dawn’, to provide security in Anambra state following the growing insecurity situation in the state which had claimed scores of lives and property in the state.
The operation was inaugurated at Igbariam, Anambra East Local Government Area of the state by 302 Artillery Regiment (General Support), On Monday.
Speaking, during the flag-off, Commander, 302 Artillery Regiment, Col. Abdulkarim Usman said the exercise, slated for October 4 to December 23, 2021, would serve as an avenue to combat insecurity and foster inter-agency cooperation.
He said it was necessary for the Nigerian Army to assist the civil authority in conjunction with other security agencies to curb the security threats in the State, soliciting for the cooperation of the people of the area for the success of the exercise.
He said, “The operation is meant to practice command and staff of combat arms and services in planning and conduct of Military Operation Other Than War, MOOTW, to confront security challenges within their area of responsibility in conjunction with other security agencies.
“The threats range from secessionist agitations by the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN).
“Others are banditry, kidnapping, cultist activities, land disputes clashes, communal clashes, chieftaincy issues clashes, assassinations and youths restiveness. To curb these countless security challenges, a robust posture is what the unit has always maintained”
While commending the troops and other security agencies for their tremendous efforts in keeping the State safe and secure, Usman stressed that more needed to be done to combat the heightened security threats in the state.
“The Regiment under the leadership of Major General T. A Lagbaja is currently undergoing unprecedented changes. The Regiment and indeed 82 Division have continued to benefit immensely from the Chief of Army Staff, COAS transformational drive.
“Remarkable improvements have been recorded, particularly in the refurbishment of Armoured Fighting Vehicles, procurement of new platforms, upgrading of training facilities and construction of new accommodation for officers and soldiers among others.
“These transformational efforts have greatly enhanced the welfare and operational capabilities of the troops. It is therefore my fervent hope that the exercise will record successes.”
The Caretaker President General of Igbariam Community, Chief Anthony Obueh described the military presence in the area as a confidence booster towards securing peace and security in the community and the state at large.
He assured the military of maximum cooperation to ensure the exercise was hitch-free.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has called on the Nigerian Army to face criminals and not innocent Igbos in their newly launched Operation Golden Dawn in the South-East.
The Igbo group made the call in a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro on Tuesday.
According to Isiguzoro, casualties in the previous Operation Python Dance are responsible for the increased violence and insecurity in the South-East.
He said in a statement that “Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, calls on Nigerian Army to guarantee that human rights violations are not part of the newly launched Operation Golden Dawn in the South-East zone.
“FG and Southeast governors should ensure that the Nigerian Army abides by the rules of engagement.
“A high level of professionalism based on military ethical standards should be allowed to drive Operation Golden Dawn, as the casualties of the previous Operation Python Dance are responsible for the increased violence and insecurity in the South-East.
“Ndigbo are foreseeing uncertainties and tension if there are hidden agendas attached to the newly formed Operation Golden Dawn. The military shouldn’t allow politicians to drag them into Anambra November 6th governorship election.
“There should not be a repeat of the ugliest experiences of the previous operation of Python Dances in the southeast characterized by intimidations, harassment of passengers and motorists, killings and dumping of corpses of suspected Biafra agitators especially IPOB members in the bushes, and unlawful incarceration of innocent people.
“We expect that there must be a human face in the operations Golden Dawn, devoid of any kind of ethnic cleansing and dishonesty.”

NUT threatens strike in states

Comrade Muhammed Nasir Idris, NUT President
World Teachers’ Day: NUT threatens strike in states yet to pay teachers N30,000 minimum wage
EDUCATIONTOP NEWS
By Clement Idoko – Abuja
On Oct 5, 2021
THE leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has threatened to withdraw the services of its members in states which have refused to pay their teachers the approved N30,000 minimum wage.
National President of NUT, Dr Nasir Idris, while speaking at the World Teachers’ Day celebration on Tuesday in Abuja, expressed dismay that some state governments were yet to implement the provisions of the National Minimum Wage Act for teachers since it was signed into law in 2018.
Idris, particularly urged the affected governors who are yet to pay their teachers the N30,000 minimum wage, to do that without further delay or prepare for imminent strike action.
“May we remind them that every worker is worthy of his/her wage, especially now that our take-home pay can
hardly take us home,” he said.
He also lamented that primary school teachers’ salaries were not being paid as and when due in some states.
He, therefore, called on the National Assembly in the ongoing 4th Alteration Act on the 1999 Constitution, to provide for the funding of Basic Education through First Line Charge.
“It will also be of immense benefit if the extent of contribution of the various tiers of government in the funding of basic education is clearly defined in the Constitution accordingly,” he said.
Idris noted that the COVID-19 crisis has expanded the role of teachers and placed a greater burden on them as they were challenged to appreciate the new normal, embrace the use of technology in education, build their capacities, be resilient, creative and innovative to be able to meet the new trends and challenges of the rapidly changing world.
According to him, to keep teaching and learning ongoing, teachers had to adopt remote or distance learning methods and to ensure that no learner is left behind.
“They also took up the duty to assess and identify learning losses and applied recovery measures such as accelerated learning programmes to reduce learning gaps.
“This means that teachers need to be adequately equipped, empowered and supported to be effective in carrying out the task of education recovery, and to meet the learning needs of all learners including the underprivileged, disadvantaged and other vulnerable children, especially the girl child,” he said.
Speaking on attacks on schools and kidnapping of students, NUT President called on the Federal Government and other stakeholders to ensure that schools across the country are protected and safe for teaching and learning.
He noted that the insecurity in Nigeria has taken a dangerous trend from the North to the East and West.
He added that this has adversely impacted teaching and learning in various communities across the country.
Idris, therefore, called on the federal, state as well as private individuals to join hands and restore peace, order and peaceful coexistence to ensure the safety of schools and the school communities for the good of the country.
“The NUT observes with great concern the several attacks on schools and other learning institutions. Many teachers have lost their lives to bandits and terrorists across the country; others have also gone to the great beyond as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We applaud the courage of teachers who lost their lives on their lines of duty. This is a great price paid by them and their dependents. Our tribute also goes to our dear students and pupils who lost their lives or were adversely affected and impacted by the global COVID-19 lockdown,” Idris lamented.

Nigeria yet to get UK comprehensive certification review ― FG
TOP NEWS
By Kazeem Biriowo – Abuja
On Oct 5, 2021
The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has said that Nigerians travelling to Britain will still be isolated for seven days, as UK Government is yet to comprehensively review Nigeria’s vaccination certification programme.
The Executive Director of NPHCDA, Dr Faisal Shuaib disclosed this on Tuesday at a press conference on Progress of COVID-19 vaccination in Nigeria.
Shuaib said communication with the UK Government officials, the vaccines administered in Nigeria are approved by the UK Government.
Shuaib further said UK officials are also involved with the vaccination program in Nigeria through the Foreign, Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) and they are optimistic that by the time Nigeria’s COVID-19 vaccination program certification is assessed, it will be approved.
He said: “Nigeria’s status has not changed. Nigeria is not among the listed countries that need mandatory quarantine for 14 days in a supervised UK facility.
“The statement released by the UK Government is in line with the Press statement released last week that Nigerians will continue to isolate upon arrival to the UK.
“This is similar to our requirement to have travellers from the UK, isolate for seven days upon arrival in Nigeria.
“The Presidential Steering Committee is in the process of reviewing these requirements. We have been in touch with the UK Government.
“Just like they stated clearly in their communication, the current listing of Countries with approved vaccination certification has just started in the UK.
“They are reviewing the Country’s programs in phases. If you go through the list of 50 closely, no African country made the list.
“Once it gets to our turn, we are more likely than not to get approved in the coming weeks. Like the UK Government have clearly stated, the process of assessment would occur in phases.”
Shuaib also pointed out that in recent weeks, the agency have intensified campaigns for the uptake of second dose using multiple media strategies, stakeholders, and community engagement, and these have yielded appreciable results.
He, however, reiterated that more work needs to be collectively done to improve vaccine uptake.
“We will continue to engage with citizens to promote a more rapid uptake of the vaccines much as we will continue to count on your professional support to see that people are adequately protected against COVID-19.
“I would like to inform you that yesterday evening, we received 501,600 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines from the COVAX facility as donation from the Government of France.
“We have also gotten confirmation that we will be receiving 3,577,860 doses of Pfizer vaccines within the next two weeks.
“As part of our transparency process to Nigerians and the Media, we would be providing you with figures of the adverse event following immunization reported.
“In this phase of the vaccination process, 191 serious and 6,555 non-serious AEFI cases were reported. All cases reported were managed in the health facility and individuals have fully recovered and back to their normal daily living.
“In the coming months, Nigeria will be receiving more doses of COVID-19 vaccines through COVAX facility. We anticipate that the vaccines will be quite large in amount, and therefore will require more efficient and faster ways of utilizing them including expanding access to the vaccines.
“We have therefore started implementing the decentralisation of vaccine utilisation by involving the private sector in the vaccine administration.
“Currently, COVID-19 vaccines are available at Government health facilities only. As we decentralize, private health facilities who meet the set criteria will be allocated COVID-19 vaccines, after due training of their immunization service providers.
“Vaccinations in a private health facility will continue with the help of Government health officials. Subsequently, clients will be able to access COVID-19 vaccines at both government and private health care facilities in the country.
“This will be done at different levels which would include the States and Local Governments. We are taking every caution to ensure that when implemented, the decentralization policy is not corrupted.
“Private health care facilities will be carefully selected based on transparent eligibility criteria, and supervision will be maximized to ensure discipline and compliance with safety measures.
“The goal, as I said is to expand access to COVID-19 vaccines and to ensure rapid and safe vaccine utilization,” Shuaib added.
