Many Feared Killed In Ebonyi Communal Clash

Post Date : December 13, 2024

Following the lingering crisis between the people of Umuobor-Akaeze and Ogwor-Ishiagu both in the Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Governor Francis Nwifuru has declared the disputed land a buffer zone.

The two neighbouring communities have been engaged in communal clashes for over five decades, leading to loss of lives and destruction of properties worth millions of naira over a fertile piece of land known as Elueke.

Many have reportedly been killed in a renewed war between members of both communities.

A truck driver from Imo state who was plying the ever-busy Akaeze/Ishiagu expressway that links the warring communities was killed around the Ayaragu axis of the expressway by suspected warlords who blocked the road since the conflict intensified a few days ago.

On Wednesday, four people, including a man and his son, were killed, while two decomposing bodies were also recovered.

Governor Nwifuru, in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Grace Umezurike, has directed both communities to stay away from the disputed land, warning that anyone found there would face the wrath of the law.

The statement, obtained by Channels Television on Thursday, also directed security agencies to increase security presence in the area to ensure compliance with the directives and maintain law and order.

Meanwhile, the governor has invited 20 stakeholders from each community to a crucial meeting aimed at finding a lasting solution to the crisis.
