Two suspected armed robbers met their waterloo after they were set ablaze by angry mob in Awada near Onitsha, Anambra State.
The deceased, said to have stormed the area on a motorcycle, reportedly robbed some residents of their money, phones and other valuables.
An eye witness said the robbers were apprehended following a hot chase by residents of the area and were set ablaze.
He said: “They shot severally in the air to scare people in attempt to escape. But they were unluckily as they were given a hot chase.
“They were captured after the MCC Junction, where the residents placed the motorcycle on top of them and burnt them.”
Confirming the incident, Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, urged members of the public who resort to jungle justice to exercise restraint and hand over suspects to police for proper investigation.
He said,: “Information revealed that at about 5:30pm on on 19/1/2022, the yet unidentified armed suspects, operating with motorcycle, robbed some persons in their shops at Awada.
“During a hot chase by an angry mob when they discovered the robbers were using toy gun, accosted the suspects at Oraifite street by Ogbo bread and set them ablaze with their motorcycles.”
“The Commissioner of Police, Echeng Echeng frowned at such act and thanked members of the public for assisting the Police in apprehending suspected criminals.
“They should always exercise restraint by not taking the law into their hands and endeavour to take such suspects to the nearest Police Station whenever they are apprehended.
“This would afford the Police the opportunity to conduct appropriate investigation into the nefarious activities of the suspects; and bring them to justice in accordance with extant laws.”
