The Nigerian Government remains silent as countries like the United Kingdom, France, The Netherlands, Czech Republic, Sweden, Spain and Canada make frantic efforts to evacuate their citizens from crisis-torn Afghanistan.

Replying to FIJ’s enquiry over the government’s plan for Nigerian citizens resident in the country, Abike Dabiri, Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, said Geoffrey Onyeama, the Minister of Public Affairs, would “handle such issues” if the need arose.

FIJ made several calls to Onyeama’s phone number but they were unanswered. He has also not responded to the SMS sent to his phone.

On Sunday, Taliban insurgents retook Afghanistan’s capital, almost two decades after they were ousted by US troops. Ashraf Ghani, Afghan’s president, also fled the country, abandoning the presidential palace to the fighters.

On Monday, videos emerged of military airplanes evacuating Americans from the country. The US Government has also deployed additional 1,000 soldiers to Afghanistan to join the 5,000 military personnel already on the ground in ensuring the successful evacuation of its citizens.
