Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka on Friday criticised President Muhammadu Buhari’s insistence on reopening grazing routes.
Soyinka, speaking at a press conference in Lagos, said he suspects a hidden agenda behind Buhari’s actions as several stakeholders have asked for ranching as a solution to the perennial farmer-herder conflict.
He also described the invasion of Sunday Igboho’s home as unjust and asked Benin Republic to release him.
Earlier in the month, President Buhari had approved recommendations of a committee to review “with dispatch,” 368 grazing sites, across 25 states in the country, “to determine the levels of encroachment,” according to a statement signed by presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu.
The President believes the reclamation of grazing routes can put an end to the constant clashes between farmers and herdsmen across the country.
