The United States District Court of California has requested 10-day pre-trial detention of Abba Kyari, the former Head of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT).
According to documents signed by Tracy Wilkinson, the Acting US Attorney, and sighted by ThisDay, the court wants Kyari detained for 10 days “on criminal grounds”.
“Plaintiff, United States of America, by and through its court of records, hereby requests detention of defendant (Abba Kyari) and gives notice of the following factors: temporary detention requested on the following grounds: that (b)the defendant is an alien not lawfully admitted for permanent residence or (c) defendant may flee,” the court papers read in parts.
The Attorney’s office had alleged that Ramon Abbas, aka Hushpuppi, paid Kyari up to N8 million to arrest and jail one Chibuzo Vincent, an alleged fellow member of a fraud syndicate.
Although Kyari denied having a hand in the fraud, he has been under fire since the allegations were made against him. He has lost his position as head of the IRT.
However, Concerned Advocates for Good Governance (CAGG), a non-governmental organisation in Nigeria, said, on Wednesday, that it had consulted three US-based law firms to defend him.
The group said he remained innocent of the allegations levelled against him until he was proven guilty in the court of law.
