Okorocha dragged to court for allegedly building varsity with Imo state resource

Orlu youths have dragged Senator Rochas Okorocha to an Imo State High Court, seeking to recover, reclaim and restore the Eastern Palm University, Ogboko. Other respondents in the suit, HOW/585/2020, are the Governor of Imo State, Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Imo State, Imo State House of Assembly, and the Incorporated Trustees of Rochas Foundation. Explaining why they took the action during a press conference in Owerri, on Monday, the Chairman, Education Committee of Orluzurumee Youth Assembly, OYA, Engr. Christian Okolie said: “What we seek, in essence, is a declaration of the court that the Eastern Palm University, which was (allegedly) built with state resources and all instruments of state power, is indeed a property of Imo people. “We are also asking the court to hold that the management, control, and running of the University be accordingly vested, whole and entire, with the Government of Imo State, on behalf of the people of Imo State.” Okolie further explained that OYA “is more fundamentally seeking an order of Court, nullifying the fraudulent Section 3(3), (4) and (5) of the Imo State Law Number 3 of 2019, which are unconstitutional, immoral and wrongful, to the extent that they confer benefits and privileges on Rochas Okorocha as a person, his Rochas Foundation, his cronies and his proxies, in the ownership of Eastern Palm University”. While describing Law Number 3 of 2019, as “infamous and anti-people”, OYA leadership also argued that “the law was hurriedly cobbled together and nocturnally consented to by Okorocha, in total abnegation and violation of his oath of office as governor of Imo State”. He recalled with grief that although they had made spirited efforts to get Governor Hope Uzodimma to take action over “this shameful, avaricious and wicked expropriation of Imo people from their own University, by Rochas Okorocha”, OYA, however, lamented that the wider implication of this is that any governor who comes on board, will use state resources to build a university in his village and privatize same before leaving office. Okolie equally recalled that the National Universities Commission, NUC, by its letter to Imo State Government, dated April 13, 2016, recognized Eastern Palm University as the second state-owned university in Imo State, the 42nd state university in Nigeria and the 143rd university in Nigeria. Speaking also, OYA National President, Dr Sylvester Anyikwa, said that the land was not given to Okorocha, but to the Imo state government. “We were initially told that the land was for the permanent site of Imo State University, but was later changed to Imo European University, vide Law number 20 of 2012. This law was later repealed in 2016, and replaced with Law number 13, which created Eastern Palm University”, Anyikwa said. He further disclosed that this law sadly changed the University’s Visitor from Governor of Imo State to himself as Rochas Okorocha or any representative to be appointed by his Rochas Foundation. Vanguard recalls that barring any unforeseen circumstances, the matter would come up September 7, 2020, at the High Court, Owerri.

Amnesty: Bandits have killed 1,100 Nigerians in 2020

Amnesty International (AI) says bandits have killed at least 1,126 villagers across Nigeria in 2020. A new report released by the human rights watchdog on Monday said the killings were carried out from January to June 2020 during which about 380 people were also abducted by the bandits. Incessant attacks across some northern states which have been blamed on bandits have left many either dead or kidnapped, including those who have had to flee their homes and take cover in hotels. Amnesty International said while security operatives did not heed warning signs about some impending attacks, relevant authorities have failed to bring the killers to justice — and this “fuels impunity”. “The Nigerian authorities have left rural communities at the mercy of rampaging gunmen who have killed at least 1,126 people in the north of the country since January,” the report read. “Amnesty International has documented an alarming escalation in attacks and abductions in several states in north west and north central Nigeria since January 2020. “Worst affected are villages in the south of Kaduna State, where armed men killed at least 366 people in multiple attacks between January and July 2020.” Osai Ojigho, AI country director, said the failure of security forces to take sufficient steps to protect villagers from these “predictable” attacks is “utterly shameful”. “In addition to the security forces’ failure to heed warnings or respond in time to save lives, the fact that no perpetrators have been brought to justice leaves rural communities feeling completely exposed,” she added. ”The President claims he has repeatedly tasked security agencies to end the killing so that Nigerians can go to bed with their eyes closed, but clearly nothing has changed” The organisation said it interviewed residents in Kaduna, Katsina, Niger, Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba and Zamfara states, who said they “live in fear of attacks and abductions as insecurity escalates in rural areas”. It quoted residents as lamenting how security forces often arrive “hours after attacks have ended, even when officers have been given information about impending attacks”. “During one attack in Unguwan Magaji in Kaduna state, security forces arrived at the scene but left when they saw the sophisticated ammunition the attackers were using. By the time they returned, at least 17 people had been killed,” the report said. AI said while the killings have continued, those who speak out against them including farmers, activists and rights groups are “subjected to intimidation, arrest and torture” for speaking out against the attacks. “The government has an obligation to protect its population. The rising death toll in the north of Nigeria shows just how badly the authorities are failing in this responsibility,” it said.

Mountain of Fire Pastor steals £150,000 church fund, General Overseer reacts

Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries has lost £150,000 to theft. General Overseer of the mega church, Pastor Daniel Olukoya, on Saturday, admitted that the money is missing and revealed that his former employee, who is a pastor, stole the church’s funds in the United Kingdom, UK. In a statement signed by his media aide, Collins Edomaruse, and made available to reporters on Saturday, he said the employee paid the £150,000 Charity’s fund into his personal account and conspired with external auditors to shield the income from discovery. “Fortunately, all the people that took money illegally are still alive. The genesis of this allegation is that the lease of one of our branches in London contained a clause which stipulated that any party who broke the lease for any reason before its expiration would pay a penalty of £150,000 to the other party. “It happened that the owner of the property broke the lease and sold the property to a third party which necessitated the church relocating from the building. “The property owners honoured their obligation and paid the penalty sum of £150,000 which the pastor of that branch somehow found a way of paying into his personal account without informing the headquarters and conspired with the external auditors to shield that income from discovery. It was much later that a member of that branch brought to the attention of headquarters that such amount of money had been received by the pastor,” he added. He further explained that the church’s headquarters immediately set up a panel of investigation to uncover the fraud and to give fair hearing to the pastor concerned. According to the statement, the pastor attended the sitting of the panel and unequivocally admitted he stole the fund. The statement added that the General Overseer issued the pastor an ultimatum in writing to pay back the money within 48 hours whereupon he promised to re-mortgage his house in London to comply.

This transition will be directed by a body led by a soldier , who will also be head of state ,” a source in the ECOWAS delegation in capital Bamako told AFP . “ The government will also be predominantly composed of soldiers” under the junta ’s proposal, the source said on condition of anonymity . A junta official confirmed to AFP the decisions on the fate of Keita and Cisse, as well as that “ the three – year transition would have a military president and a government mostly composed of soldiers” . The coup followed months of protests calling for Keita to resign as public discontent with the government grew over the country’s brutal Islamist insurgency and collapsing economy. The junta has said it “ completed the work ” of the protesters and has vowed to stage elections “ within a reasonable time ” . However Mali ’s neighbours have called for Keita to be reinstated , saying the purpose of the visit by the delegation from the regional ECOWAS bloc was to help “ ensure the immediate return of constitutional order” . Tuesday’s coup was Mali ’ s second in eight years, and has heightened concern over regional stability as its jihadist insurgency that now threatens neighbouring Niger and Burkina Faso .

Nigerian Police slaughtered 21 of our members, arrested 47 others – IPOB alleges

The proscribed Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) has alleged that Nigerian security forces slaughtered 21 of it’s members and and have arrested 47 during a clash in Enugu on Sunday. Crimefacts had reported earlier how the proscribed group and Nigeria security agencies clashed at Community Secondary Schools Emene,Enugu State in which many IPOB member are said to have been killed . Condemning the act ,IPOB publicity secretary, Emma Powerful said that the Nigerian government and her security agencies have once again exhibited another crude round of killing and massacre against the peaceful and unarmed IPOB family members in Enugu State “We are surprised how Nigerian security agencies would allow fulani Janjaweed officers in their respective formations like army, police and DSS to be slaughtering our people without any provocation.” “This rampant killing of innocent members of IPOB will be recipocrated in due cause. IPOB members have been slaughtered and arrested in their numbers across different locations in Enugu State today Sunday 23rd August 2020,” he said . “We must warn and put the whole world on notice that Nigerian Government and her security operatives should stop killing our people because we are peaceful organization with the mandate of restoring Biafra sovereignty within shortest period.” “Today(Sunday), the Nigerian security personnel stormed IPOB meeting ground in Enugu and started shooting sporadically which consumed lives of 21 members and 47 arrested for just no cause or provocation. It is unfortunate that security operatives murdered innocent members and carried their lifeless bodies to unknown locations. The security in the whole world must understand that keeping quiet and following the rule of law should not be construed as weakness on the part of IPOB.” “IPOB is a well rooted movement committed fully on the pursuit for Biafra freedom and independence from Nigeria. We are not a violent group and there is nothing they can do to change our resolve to maintain peace and order in our land. The efforts of the Nigeria Government and her partners in crime in trying to push IPOB to change their tactics will amount to vanity,” Emma Powerful said. “We are warning and asking Nigeria government and her security operatives to stop this atrocity immediately. Why have they refused to confront Fulani terrorists herdsmen, Boko Haram terrorists, Ansaru group,Fulani bandits, ISIS and other groups ravaging the country and busy killing innocent and unarmed citizens of IPOB?” “Those responsible for this barbaric killing in Enugu today must pay for their actions against IPOB at the appropriate time. It is laughable for DSS to be claiming that they lost 5 personnel in the hands of unarmed and Peaceful people. It is clear to all that IPOB doesn’t indulge or carry arm or involve with any object. IPOB is a peaceful movement and we must remain so till Biafra is totally achieved”.
